OS Golfing Society

The Golfing Society is very active as the Fixture List for 2024 demonstrates. We have matches, meetings and team events at fantastic courses including Sunningdale, Royal St Georges, Deal, Formby, Hunstanton, Brancaster, Aldeburgh, Woodhall Spa, Little Aston and Woking. In 2023 we will celebrate the Centenary with enlarged matches against Canford and the School and a special event on the Stowe course on 23 September.

Although the team events such as the Halford Hewitt, Grafton Morrish and Cyril Gray require low handicap players, male and female golfers of all standards are very welcome at the meetings and matches.

We are keen to attract younger Old Stoic golfers. All those under 30 qualify for a 50% reduction in the cost of green fees at all meetings and matches.
For the weekend meetings, efforts will also be made to provide free or low cost accommodation.

OS Racing Club

The Old Stoic Racing Club (OSRC) is now in its sixth season and we are delighted to continue to have horses in training with two Old Stoic trainers. Jonathan Portman (Chatham 83) is our flat trainer in Lambourn and whilst Alex Hales (Chandos 92) overseeing the jumps team just on the outskirts of Banbury.

The Club has received wide support with past pupils (leaving years represented from 1954-2004), parents, their friends plus the occasional staff member of Stowe all involved.

A flavour of what our owners currently receive:

  • Owners badges when your horse races
  • Box hospitality at certain meetings
  • Numerous visits to both trainer yards to watch the OS horses work on the gallops
  • Regular progress emails, photos and videos of your horses with a private what’s app group just for members of the Racing Club
  • Invitation to join a private OSRC Facebook page
  • An invitation for you and a guest to the annual end of season lunch back at Stowe
  • A percentage share in all prize money generated by both horses
  • Invitations to specially organised events including preview evenings and visits to Stud Farms

Our Horses

Flat
Sweet Reward

This five year old has been a real credit to our syndicate. In 2022, he won three times from ten races becoming Jonny Portman’s highest performing horse in terms of wins and prize money earned that season.

He also took the OSRC members to the famous Glorious Goodwood Festival finishing second. We have high hopes for him this year in 1mile + races.

Corinthian Kid

This good looking 2 year old is gradually increasing her work at Jonny’s yard in Lambourn. She will make her debut during the summer and we hope she can give us some good performances.

National Hunt
Bourbon Beauty

She has been a star for our jumping arm. In March 2021 - sadly in the midst of another lockdown - she won one of the leading mares hurdle races outside of the Cheltenham Festival, the Grade 2 Mares Final at Newbury. This created a memorable moment for Stowe in racing as she was bred, owned, trained and ridden by Old Stoics!  Bourbon Beauty has won twice over hurdles with her preferred distance being 2m 5f.

Supporting CHANGE 100

The Old Stoic Racing Club continue to lend our support to CHANGE 100, to enable more children to benefit from a Stowe education. To date, through owner contributions and a percentage of prize money generated by our horses, we have donated £20,000 to the campaign.
