George Clarke (Former staff, 1950-1985) and Stowe Historian

George-and-hs-wife-Sally-at-Stowe,-celebrating-his-80th-birthday-small.pngAll Old Stoics, Former Staff and Friends of Stowe who knew George during his long service to the School are warmly invited to attend an Afternoon of Remembrance on Thursday 30 May, from 2.00pm – 4.30pm.

George taught at Stowe for 35 years and was Housemaster of Grenville between 1962-1974. Outside of the classroom, George will be remembered for his work in the Stowe grounds – working with groups of Stoics to tackle the wildly overgrown gardens – he was instrumental in setting up the Landscape Committee in the 1960s, to draw together experts to help with restoration of some of the Temples as well as some interiors within the Mansion. George was involved with the Hall Bequest Trust when it was founded in 1983 and he continued to support the work of the Stowe House Preservation Trust long into his retirement up until his death at the age of 97. There have been many remarkable staff at Stowe but few whose love of Stowe reached out into the wider world and reminded academics of Stowe's place in Landscape Garden History.

The afternoon will begin with arrival drinks in the newly restored Roxburgh's Garden, on the South Front. Memories of George will be shared by individuals who worked within him to maintain the history and fabric of Stowe over the years. There will then be an opportunity to join tours of the Mansion and Landscape Gardens, led by those closest to George, followed by afternoon tea.

All those with found memories of George are invited to attend this light-hearted occasion to join together to remember one of Stowe’s most dedicated supporters.
