Visiting Stowe

As an OS, when can I visit Stowe?

The House is open to the public in both term time and School holidays.  The House website www.shpt.org details opening times.  Please note that in term time, there is a 2pm tour only. The days we are open are very specific due to the School timetable and external events, so please check the dates on the website beforehand. They are subject to change.  You are welcome to join in on any of the published dates and there is no charge for you and up to three guests.

If we cannot make these times, do I have to inform anyone of my visit?

We would prefer you to come during the published times as we can guarantee you seeing as many of the main State Rooms as possible. However, if you cannot make these times, please contact the Old Stoic Office (01280 818349) in advance, who will inform North Hall reception of your intended visit. We will endeavour to show you the available State Rooms.  If you cannot make your visit at the last minute, please let North Hall Reception know (01280 818000).  On arrival at Stowe, please report to North Hall reception where you will be asked to sign in and given a visitor’s badge.  At the end of the visit, please return the badges to reception where you will be signed out.  Please park in the cricket pavilion car park.

Can I turn up turn up at any time and wander around on my own or with my family?

As you can appreciate, in a school of this size, we cannot allow anyone to be unaccompanied around the main House, State Rooms and boarding houses in term time.  However, you are free to wander round the gardens.

Can I visit my old boarding house?

This can be arranged in advance via the OS office who will try to organise a convenient time with the Housemaster/mistress. This can take place in term time only. In School holidays the boarding houses are not open.  The boarding houses now operate a coded entrance system which necessitates booking in advance.

As an OS can I visit the National Trust Landscape Gardens?

The NT allows Old Stoics to visit the Gardens free of charge during opening hours (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stowegardens) and allows picnics in the grounds.  Pre-booked 4 person Buggies (battery cars) are available from the NT.  Please telephone the NT reception on 01280 818825 Wednesdays to Sundays to book.

Can I use the School’s sports facilities?

From a safety and security point of view, we cannot offer this service. If you wish to join the Stowe Estates and Sports Club to use the facilities regularly, please contact the Commercial office at Stowe (01280 818280) for a membership form.
