U15 County Tournament Results
The Stowe U15 team ended the tournament with a win, a tie, and three loses. As we were representing Bucks we were always going to be challenged in every game however, the county tournament provided some impressive competition and was a great experience for the girls to be able to compete at such a high standard. While the end result does not necessarily reflect a successful day, the girls were able to stay in virtually every game apart from Surrey. The tournament more than certainly provided a constructive setting for further improving skill sets and overall knowledge of the game.
Results on the day are as follows;
Bucks vs. Monmouthshire
Loss 5 - 2
Scorers: Tessa Horan (2)
Bucks vs. Wilts and Dorset
Loss 4 - 2

NETBALL
U15A v Thornton (A) Won 5 - 14
The U15s played well in their first game of the season. They settled down quickly to end the first quarter 3 - 1 up and then grew in confidence as the game went on. They are quick on the ball, moving it effectively up the court to play a quick and fluid game and are strong in defence. Alice Gurr (GA) was player of the match but Rosie Dickson also had a strong game as WA/C. Tilly Upton dominated the circle during her spell as GS and Tessa Horan and Claudia Wace were a force to be reckoned with at the other end of the court forcing errors and intercepting effectively. Georgia Alderton (C) and Tash Edwards (WD) both look useful and learnt a good deal in this opening game.
POM: Alice Gurr
U14A VII vs. Thornton College (A) Won 7 - 11
Well done to the whole team; another victory for the very talented 3rd form girls. We travelled to Thornton as our courts had not defrosted! The first quarter was very fast and furious resulting in a 4-4 draw. Following the break we slowed down play and started to control the game. Thornton however stayed close behind ensuring that we marked closely to keep them out of the circle. Alexia read the game well and made some fabulous interceptions. Jemima Chaveau kept her G.S unavailable to score with tremendous close marking. Jemima Fitzjohn was outstanding at centre working tirelessly supporting attack and defence ( & I think she has springs in her feet! )
We are starting to play together better as a team which bodes well for future matches. Accurate passing is improving along with anticipation and reaction. I look forward to our next match against Akeley Wood.
Player of the match: Jemima Fitzjohn

YA XI vs. John Hampden grammar School (H) Lost 0 - 2
Stowe were unlucky to come out of this encounter on the losing side. Overall we dominated possession but could not put he ball in the back of the net. The first half started slowly, JHG had some decent players and they communicated well as a team. They looked threatening and took the lead. This seemed to wake Stowe up and we then dominated play, passing the ball with confidence (although too often through the middle of the park) and we drew three excellent saves out of their keeper - this was the deciding point, if one of those had gone in Stowe would have carried on improving and won easily. The second half saw Stowe dominate possession but create relatively few chances, we were to loose in the final third with lots of balls flying off the end of the pitch or being given away. For the last 8 minutes we went 3 at the back and with 1 minute to go JHG scored a breakaway goal.
BASKETBALL
U16s v Ousedale (H) Lost 24-51
The U16s played a talented Ousedale side in their first match of the season. Ousedale ran a slick fast break which helped them storm into a commanding early lead. At half-time Stowe were trailing 27-10. Stowe began the second half brightly and managed to stop the Ousedale fast break. Just when it looked like we were going to make a game of it at 31-18, Ousedale pulled away to score 9 points without reply. This was a good test for the boys and the return game should be a much tighter affair. Anthony Deriziotis scored some fine baskets and George Huxtable and Hugo Hiley controlled the game well in the guard spot. Now that they have played their first game the players will be a lot more relaxed and self-confident in the games to come.
MOM: Anthony Deriziotis
U14s v Ousedale (H) Lost 6 - 8
This was the U14's first competitive game for the school against Ousedale. Due to limited time we were only able to play 5 minute quarters and so all the players were given at least 5 minutes play. The whole team worked hard up and down the court but found it difficult to create many clear cut chances. Oscar Pegg was equally effective in offence and defence and will, in time, develop into an excellent point guard. Arthur Dreyfus, Harry Norris and Oscar Williams defended and rebounded well. Other notable performances came from Artura Subowo and Michael Kitchen.
MOM: Oscar Pegg

1st XI vs. MCS Oxford (A) Drew 1 - 1
Stowe travelled to MCS with 12 players but full of confidence after the weekend. The game started brightly and was very hard fought. The team created a few chances and took the lead after a well worked move up the left then being transferred through the middle before Nick Paine slotted on the reverse stick. A few more chances went past the post and the team went in 1-0 at half time.
In the second half MCS came out and put the team under pressure which caused a few issues as we turned the ball over and rushed free hits. We still looked dangerous on the counter attack but couldn't add to our lead. MCS equalised with a deflected cross with 10 minutes to go. However the boys stepped up and won a short corner in the last minute which was well saved by the goal keeper and the game finished 1-1.
A draw was probably a fair result with Stowe creating chances in both halves but MCS kept the ball better 2nd half.
MOM: Hugo Barran coped well under the press second half and attacked well in the first.
GS: Nick Paine
2nd XI vs. MCS Oxford (A) Won 0 - 2
A fantastic game from the 2nd XI this week, the team played like they were seasoned pro's. We dominated the 1st half and the opposition didn't know how to handle our quick passing and pace upfront. James Barnett picked the ball up just past the half way line, and carried all the way into the 'D' without anyone applying any pressure. He tucked the ball nicely into the corner giving the keeper no chance. 1-0 Stowe. The boys continued their barrage of attacks and it was not long before they were successful again. This time some great individual play from Seb Clarke saw him drive the base line and skip past two players before playing the ball across the goal for a tap in from Ollie Jackson. 2-0 Stowe
The second half was quieter with both teams playing a lot of the hockey in the middle of the pitch. Stowe began to tire slightly due to not having any subs. However the boys showed the true spirit of playing Stowe hockey by continuing to work hard and Mike Evens made three fantastic saves in a row to keep the score at 2-0. Kit Dixon Smith had another blinder in the middle, never resting. Robbie Henriques and Harry Martin must be commended for their concentration levels throughout the game in defence. It was a delight to see these boys play such fluid hockey.
MOM: James Barnett
GS: James Barnett, Ollie Jackson
3rd XI vs. Kimbolton (H) Drew 0 - 0
Stowe rallied well in this close encounter. The first 10 minutes saw Kimbolton run a few chances close with Fitzherbert making a couple of impressive saves, and the backline of defence holding pretty firm. Stowe struggled to make many chances in the first half but did get the ball into the back of the net, only to have it disallowed due to height restrictions. Kilgour and Nichols worked hard in the middle of the park and it was in the second half when the ball went into the back of the Kimbolton net again, off the stick of Housson, only to be disallowed again for height restrictions. Stowe managed to then hold on in the last few minutes for a draw.
CA XI vs. RGS HW (A) Lost 3 - 1
A decent game of hockey against the best quality opposition so far this season and therefore a good experience for the boys to play against players who are regularly playing club/regional level hockey. The galling thing is that we had enough opportunities to win the game but failed to finish clinically enough. Positively, this was the first time in the last few years that we've run them close. George Jackman again to be commended for intensity and work rate (to the extent that he broke down with cramp half way through the second half) and MOM Harry Cornett for courageous and tenacious defending. A well-worked goal finished by Alex Stone.
MOM: Cornett
GS: Stone

YA XV vs. QES Barnett (H) Won 66 – 12
A rampant Yearlings A side took full advantage of some lack lustre defence and went on the rampage building a 33 point advantage at half time. They then proceeded to match their first half exploits with another 33 points in the second period. There was some fluid movement of the ball between forwards and backs and this enabled the wingers Kuku (4) and Ellis Jenkinson (3) to pick up 7 tries between them. No8 Thompson grabbed a brace and scrum half Phillips got the other try with fly half Kerr kicking 7 conversions and centre Riley getting one too. Another promising display but there are stiffer challenges ahead.
YB XV vs. QES Barnet (H) Lost 22 - 33
The Yearlings B fought long and hard to try and contain a potent QES Barnet side which possessed quite a number of elusive and powerful runners. Stowe were slow to organise their defensive in the first half and this culminated in two tries from QES Barnet. Lazy players hiding behind rucks and not pushing hard enough gave QES Barnet the room they needed to score tries. Some huge defensive work was put in by the likes of Seb Stone, Isaac Ajala and Harry Bunting with the latter two being taken to A + E for suspected concussion!
With 14 men on each side the game carried on with QES Barnet scoring several times due to weak tackles. Stowe only seemed to fully realise their potential late on the in the game with charges by Grayson and A Opuala Charles leading to two tries in the last 10 minutes.
Tries: Coupland, A Opuala Charles, Tucker, Palling
Conversions: Lendrum (1)
YC XV vs. QES Barnett (H) Lost 27 - 36
We started slow by allowing Barnet in for two quick tries. It took about 15 minutes for our team to get into the game, but when we did, we looked good. It proved a very close game with each side looking as though they could win. It stayed within one score throughout and Stowe were camped on their line for the last 5 minutes but could not get over. At the end of the day, I think Barnet were the better team but we have gained much from our defeat. Tries scored by; Alvaro de la Vega x 3, Oscar Pegg and Angus McCrorie-Shand. One conversion by George Markham.
MOM: Oscar Pegg.
YD XV vs. QES Barnett (H) Lost 24 - 0
The first half was very close, Stowe going down only 5-0 by half time. The second half began with a series of stupidly conceded penalties which gave QES Barnett a kick start to their momentum and, after losing the ball repeatedly at the breakdown, Stowe ended up succumbing by 24 points to nil. It was frustrating not to score, having been close on occasion, and having had a very high success rate in the scrum, but in the end QES Barnett had a number of considerably heavier ball-carriers.
MOM: Allhusen (for great tackling and about-the-park presence)
Senior Development XV vs. Welbeck (A) Lost 29 - 27
The strength of this sixth form army college coupled with a stiff breeze proved a difficult challenge in the first half. Stowe conceded two early tries after sustained pressure and a third by half time was inevitable as we struggled to get out of our 22. The second half was a different matter with Courtney, Oscar Page, Harry Consett, Alex Long and Christopher Carrelet all grabbing tries. Although the wind had dropped, the three quarter line successfully worked out how to beat a persistently offside opposition with slick handling. The forwards were gutsy throughout, refusing to be bullied up front. The fifth form players certainly stepped up to the mark and played a role in the overall team performance earning respect along the way. Despite the Welbeck reinforcements coming on as we closed the score line, a late try left a kick under the posts for the draw and had we waited for the tee we may have converted it! The opposition conceded a draw was the right result and again Stowe had left a mark up at Welbeck. A physical game for both sides which was very well contested.

1st XII vs. St George’s (A) Won 5 - 8
This was a new fixture and therefore didn’t quite know what to expect from them. The match started well and both sides scored from pressure around the attacking circles. We probably had a bit more possession but the opposition GK was strong and we were making some midfield and defensive errors allowing them to put us under pressure. Although we went in at half time with the score at 4-4 (three excellent goals from Imo Voorspuy and one from Claudia Button) we knew we would have to correct these mistakes if we were going to win. As the 2nd half started we played tighter man to man defence and pushed up on their midfield attack so that they did not have the same kind of freedom to attack us. The conditions of the field made it difficult to run plays as we kept losing our footing in the mud. We also experienced sideline banter akin to the football terraces from the boys at St Georges and the girls did well to cope with the added pressure. Emma Saric did a fantastic job in midfield – winning every single centre draw (14 in all) and our refusal to give in started to play dividends. With goals from Megan Duckett (2), Claudia (1) and a free position from Emma we stared to gain the upper hand in the last ten minutes. Their key player in attack did not get the same kind of possession in the 2nd half as our defence players hassled and won ground balls with their tenacious behaviour. With surging runs in midfield from Charlie Lechmere, Lucy Horan and Becky Raeburn and clinical shooting from Megan and Claudia we scored three goals in the last 10 minutes to win the second half convincingly and ultimately the match 8-5.
Goals: Imo Voorspuy 3
Claudia Button 2
Megan Duckett 2
Emma Saric 1
Assists: Claudia 1, Megan 2, Charlotte Cook 1
2nd XII vs. St George’s (A) Won 6 – 7
The pitch was quite muddy and the girls were not looking forward to the match. Within the first few seconds of the game, the tone was set, and the girls knew this was going to be a very aggressive team. Stowe scored the first goal and St. George’s did not hesitate to fire back. At the end of the second half the score was Stowe 4 St. George’s 2. Annabel Duthie and Daisy Ussher worked fantastically well around the crease. Annabel Duthie had 4 assists through the entire match. At the start of the second half St. George’s came out strong, Stowe knew that the other team wanted the victory. The girls did not slow down; they took their time on attack and waited for the plays to unfold. Annabel was able to find Hannah Maxwell 3 times on the crease; one was a great quick stick shot! Annabel was also able to find Laura Welford on a great cut through the 11meter. She was also able to find the back of the net 4 times. St George’s continued to fight till the very last whistle. Stowe’s defensive end struggled on Wednesday, the girls were not communicating well and left girls wide open within the 11meter. Jem Phillips had point blank shots throughout the match, she was able to save 4 but St. George’s got 6 passed her. The final score of the match Stowe 7 St. George’s 6.
M.O.M: Annabel Duthie
