LACROSSE

1st XII vs. Bedford (H) Won 8 – 5

With a few players added to the squad we should have been able to produce a comfortable win over Bedford today, but one of the beauties of sport is that it is always unpredictable and the 1st team learnt a lesson in not being too complacent this season! Bedford scored first and for a while it was neck and neck in terms of the scoring. We created plenty of chances but at half time we had scored 4 and missed another 6 golden opportunities when we had been 1:1 with the GK. Caroline Thompson opened up the scoring for us with a break away run in defence – Megan spotted her and with a feed from behind goal the ball went in to the back of the net. Three more goals from Claudia and Cookie gave us a 4-3 lead at half time but we were below par in all areas of the field. In defence we were unable to close them down and for a unit that is normally so aggressive we were playing like polite school girls. In attack we were creating chances but actually missing the goal rather than being thwarted by good goal keeping! It continued to be a close scoring game until the last 5 minutes with Claudia scoring 3 goals to finally break away from the dead lock and giving us victory by 8 goals to 5. In all we took 20 shots and in any other match would have expected to have scored from all 20! All players know they had excellent chances to get on the score sheet and most defence know that they did not put the opposition under pressure in their attacking third. Priscilla played well in goal and her clears are getting further up field which is a bonus for our midfield runners – so not all doom and gloom – we did win – and sometimes great teams play poorly and still never get beaten!

Scorers: Caroline Thompson (1), Claudia (5), Imo (1), Cookie (1)
Assists: Megan (2), Cookie (1), Lucy (2) Claudia (1)

2nd XII vs. Bedford (H) Won 10 - 2

The Stowe 2nd Team had a fantastic start to the season! The girls went head to head against Bedford on Saturday. New comers Ellie Melville, Ellie Holt, Jess Noakes, Maddie Wackett, and Laura Welford were huge assets to the team. Bedford has always been an aggressive team and on Saturday they lived up to that description. However, Stowe was prepared for everything Bedford threw at them. Daisy Ussher started at centre and did a great job either winning the draw herself or flipping it to a team mate. She won 4 draw controls herself; Laura Welford had 2 as well as Hannah Maxwell. Stowe’s defensive end did a terrific job keeping out Bedford’s attack. Lily Comyn had an interception, 2 caused turnovers, and 3 ground balls. Ellie Melville had 3 ground balls, Ellie Holt had 2, and Emma Qualye had one turnover and 2 ground balls. Maddie Wackett and Mara Rowan-Hamilton were on the defensive wings and contributed a great deal within the midfield. Jess Noakes and Laura Welford were attack wings and did a great deal of work within the midfield and on the attacking end. Annabel Duthie had 3 goals and 3 assists. Jess Noakes had 2 goals and 1 interception. Daisy Ussher had 1 goal, Becky Raeburn had 1 goal and one assist, and Laura Welford had 2 assists. Jem Phillips had 5 saves and was able to hold Bedford to only 2 goals! The final score was Stowe 10 Bedford 2.

U 15A XII vs. Bedford (H) Won 10 - 5
The girls started the first half off by scoring three goals in a row. Bedford found their footing however, and made a comeback to even the score at four all. In the last seconds of the first half, Tilly Upton found the back of the net to put Stowe ahead 5-4. At half time we were able to regroup and go back to the basics, focusing on stick skills and ground ball pick ups as well as settling the ball on attack and tackling back on defence. Thanks to Tessa Horan and Tilly Upton’s draw controls, we were able to maintain possession for the majority of the second half and were able to score an additional 5 goals, out scoring Bedford 5-1 for the second half. Tilda Bevan and Tilly Upton each had hat tricks on the day, followed by Tessa Horan with a pair. Issy Boorman and Val Madojemu each picked up a goal as well, ultimately ending in a 10-5 win for Stowe. Ella Womersly and LuLu Shelembe both played well in cage, each coming up with 3 saves on the day.
Scorers: Tilda (3), Tilly (3), Tessa (2), Val (1), Issy (1)
Assists: Tessa (1), Tilly (1)

U15B XII vs. Bedford (H) Won 6 - 4

This was a confident start to the season for the U15B side. There is no doubt that the girls worked hard and they showed a good deal of determination throughout. Although we dominated possession in the early stages of the game, some basic stick skills let us down at times and as a result Bedford was the first team to find the back of the net. However, the girls were not daunted; Edwina was particularly effective at creating space and soon retaliated, levelling the score. Georgia and Lucy played well together on the wing, fighting hard for the ball and making some effective tackles. Half time saw us 2-1 down, which was disappointing, given the fact that we had dominated possession throughout the first half. However, the second half saw us making much more of our opportunities to strike at goal and as a result we grew in confidence. We also played much more effectively as a team, communicating well and making more effective and accurate passes. Lyra was particularly impressive in terms of her ability to intercept the ball, creating several opportunities for strikes at goal and ultimately scoring herself from a clear run down the wing. A good target for future matches would be to ensure we are making more of the opposition's mistakes. However, this was an extremely encouraging start to the season; well done girls!

Scorers: Edwina (2) Lyra, Fenella

U14A XII vs. Bedford (H) Won 9 - 2

From the first whistle, Stowe dominated the game. Every member of the team fought hard for ground balls and worked to get open to help their team mates. Sometimes there was a lack of composure that can be expected for the first match of the term, but that seemed to disappear as the game continued. KJ started in goal for the first half and showed a great performance with four saves. Izzy stepped into the goal for the second half and did not let any shots past her. Philippa Stacey and Milla Harvey-Scholes led the scoring with three goals each. Aleksia Zivanovic scored two goals, one of which was off of a pass from Jemima Fitzjohn. Cameron scored a goal and had an assist. Aleksia and Milla earned most of the draw controls, helping Stowe maintain constant possession of the ball. On the defensive end, Dot Holt turned up a great performance with three groundballs and Caprice Critchley caused Bedford to turn the ball over two times! At the end of the match, it was a 9-2 victory for Stowe.

U14B XII vs. Bedford (H) Lost 0 - 2

Although Stowe did not win this match, it is clear that there is a lot of talent on this team and with a little bit more practice there will be some victories in the future. This was the first lacrosse match for most of the girls on this team, and they have already shown a lot of great skill. Jess Burke and Izzy Muirhead both used their speed and never gave up, making several good plays on both attack and defence. Jemima Chauveau had numerous interceptions and groundballs on the defensive end. KJ and Izzy both had several great saves in the goal again. Although Stowe never got on the scoreboard, the talent that we saw makes it exciting to think of what will happen in future matches after a little bit more practice!

Colts A XI vs. Mill Hill (H) Won 7 - 1

The Colts A team produced a convincing display to open the season largely due to some very pleasing composure on the ball and the desire to play the simple pass quickly and with pace. This led to some excellent passages of play, down the right in particular and it was not long before the pressure applied led to a short corner from which Ben Robinson rifled home the opening goal. Ben Robinson was superb at the heart of the defence in the way that he showed composure on the ball, got it strong and distributed to Harry Dixon-Smith and George Jackman down the right. Harry himself showed good awareness of when to get the ball high to the forwards and when to use Harry Cornett as an outlet at right back. A further short corner led to George Jackman getting an excellent touch at the back post from a well-worked routine to make it two. To the boys’ credit, they did not slacken the pace or start to dribble too much and as a result two more goals followed before half time from Hugo Kinahan and our potent centre forward James Hill. The message at half time was to score at least 3 more and the boys did just that in the second half with goals from Stone (well set up by Charlie Clover), Jackman and Fergus Edwards, who had come on as a substitute. Indeed all 3 substitutes were used throughout the game and performed with credit.

MOM: Ben Robinson
GS: Jackman 2, Robinson, Stone, Kinahan, Hill, Edwards

2nd XI vs. Mill Hill (H) Won 2 - 0

Top performance by the guys against a decent Mill Hill side. Stowe always looked dangerous on the break and have 4 good chances in the first half. Woodward and Martin did a great job keeping the Mill Hill attack quiet. In the second half, things started to come together a bit more and Roland Parker managed to sneak in a poachers goal after some pretty dreadful skills from both sides. Stowe then put together an excellent attack and some neat one touch play led to a great goal from Clarke. It was good sign of things to come that Stowe closed up the shop nicely in the last 5 mins. Very pleasing.
MOM: Clarke, played well and led by example.

JCA XI vs. Mill Hill (A) Won 0 - 4

The JCA XI started this promising season with a four nil win over a physical Mill Hill side. After some good early exchanges, Stowe began to dominate possession without creating any meaningful chances. It took a well worked short corner for Stowe to open the scoring, with Best slamming home his first of two goals for the day. The second half saw a much more impressive Stowe display, with sharp passing and a greater sense of urgency in the oppositions half. Some excellent one two's created Best's second and George Silk's first goal. However, the best was saved for last, with a slick move, starting all the way back in defence with Tom Young, Stowe passed the ball 8 times in in and out down the right wing, before Best crossed the ball to Silk to seal the win. Stowe were by no means at their best, but showed promise for the season ahead.

Goals: Wangmontri x 2, Silk x 2
MOM: Tom Hunnable (outstanding in defence)

JCB XI vs. Mill Hill (A) Won 0 - 3

The JCB XI got off to a good start with a three nil win over Mill Hill. The first half was scrappy but Stowe managed to work their first goal late in the half. The second half there was some better hockey and the lads started to string some passes together. Stowe dominated the second half and Ed Gorst was left as a spectator in goal. A good way to start the season but there will be tougher tests to come.

Goals: Carney x 2, Keeping x 1
MOM: Monty Curran (never missed a tackle)

NETBALL

U18 Pre-Season Netball Tournament Bedford Modern School

Stowe vs St Albans Lost 6-7
vs Wisbech A Lost 4-9
vs NHS Lost 3-7
vs BMS Drew 5-5
vs Kimbolton Lost 0-13
vs Wisbech B Won 9-5

Following a day of pre-season training on Wednesday the 1st VII travelled to BMS for a pre-season netball tournament. It was a well attended event with six x 14 minute matches. We made a great start against St Albans, holding them to 6-6 until the final moment of the game where they scored to narrowly win 6-7. Next we played Wisbech A, who were the eventually winners of the round robin stage. We played particularly well in the second half to claw back some goals finishing with a respectable score of 4-9. NHS were an experienced side who have played together for many years. We defended well with Lucy-May Wallis and Ruby Mills putting their attack under pressure in the circle. Next we played the hosts BMS and produced our best performance. Unfortunately Lucy-May was 'taken out' by the opposition leaving her with an ankle injury and out of the tournament. We managed to hold the game to 5-5 which was pleasing considering the circumstances. Kimbolton were a strong side and although they had lost to Wisbech A, they proved to be our biggest challenge. We never really featured in this game! We were determined to win our last match but made a slow start with the score only at 2-2 at half time. We did step up a gear for the final 7 minutes which was a fantastic way to finish. The girls learnt a lot and this tournament was extremely valuable in giving us time on court to develop as a team. There is considerable potential for the season Well done to Yemurai Soper-Gwatidzo, Lucy-May Wallis, Anna Roe, Heloise Kleinwort, Ruby Mills, Rebecca Dale, Ellie Pinnock, Alice Hughes.

SOCCER

On Sunday, Stowe took a 16 man squad to the four team tournament against Uppingham, Oakham and Rugby. Three 50 minute matches were played in a round robin format, resulting in one win, one loss and one draw. Goals were scored by Folabi Lawal, Ed Wightman and Amana Atawodi. The team managed 3rd place, equal points with 2nd only to score one less goal and 1 point behind first place. A very competitive and closely fought tournament. Well done to all the stoics involved.

HOCKEY

1st XI vs. Trent (A) Lost 3 - 2
1st XI vs. Bedford (A) Won 1 - 2
1st XI vs. Rutland club (A) Lost 5 - 2

A really productive day for the 1st XI as they played and competed with some strong opposition. Nick Paine and Henry Rudd both scored 2 and Cameron Roberts scored his first for the 1st team.

Stowe stepped up a level from yesterday playing harder passes allowing the ball to be moved across the pitch creating more space in midfield. General finishing needs some work but at least the chances were created.

Man of the Match:

1st game Angus Craven
2nd game Henry Rudd
3rd game Sam Tottenham
