SWIMMING

Swimming meet versus Cheltenham College (H)

The swimmers were outstanding against Cheltenham. The intermediate boys finished 1st & 2nd in all strokes. Up and coming start Max Brunette Jacobs gained a good 2nd place to Ivan Popov - the winner in the 50m Fly. The inter B team were also strong - Theo Tseri rapid in the water.

The junior girls were delighted with a win - Anna fox was outstanding in the Backstroke. The senior boys were happy to get a win with Edward Pettifer's team knowing that there will be few wins this season at senior level with the departure of six older swimmers including one GB swimmer. Ella Johnson was the leading light for the senior girls

Girls 1st XI vs. Mill Hill (H) Won 8 - 0

After last years ferocious battle, Stowe were eagerly anticipating a tough game against Mill Hill. The start was delayed by an hour, as the opposition were late to arrive. This was a challenge for the girls to stay focused and warm on what was a bitter afternoon. The game finally got going and within 5 minutes, Charlotte Lechmere had slammed the ball against the back board for the first goal. She scored two more within 20 minutes, to claim an excellent first half hat-trick.

The target set for the second half was to keep a clean sheet and to double the score line. The girls responded brilliantly to this and were 4 - 0 up after only a few minutes of re-starting. Mill Hill had finally woken up and began to put a bit more pressure on the Stowe defence. Harriet Deakin was outstanding in this position and along with Lucie Wellington, they ensured that no one would pass. The strikers started to play with good height and this allowed the Stowe midfield space with which to run in to. Becca Dale, Charlie and Laura Welford took full advantage of this and were able to supply the assists to goals by Claudia Bett, Steph Robinson and Alice Hughes. Alice was unlucky not to get a brilliant up-right reverse stick goal, which hit the post, as this would have been a candidate for goal of the season. An excellent all round performance and this sets them up well for Saturday’s game against Cheltenham.

MOM: Lechmere
GS: Lechmere 4, Bett 2, Robinson, Hughes

Yearlings A vs. Dr Challenor’s

Stowe took longer to get into the match than their opponents with DCGS peppering the Stowe goal early. Oscar Williams made some excellent saves to keep it to 0-0. Stowe then scored a slightly lucky breakaway goal after some good work by Markham down the left hand side. Challenor’s hit back with a good strike just a few minutes before half time.

The second half saw a different Stowe side - they attacked mercilessly, and put huge amounts of pressure on the DCGS goal but unfortunately failed to score. This time it was DCGS who scored a lucky goal after being gifted the ball twice by Stowe defenders.

Unfortunately Stowe failed to score again and it ended 2-1 to DCGS. It was a VERY good second half performance by Stowe who are starting to show some of their potential again. It was a game that was won by a superb little player for DCGS who scored both their goals.

5th XV vs. Uppingham (A) Won 5 - 12

The 5th XV travelled to Uppingham with 15 players due to some late illness and injuries. Kirk Blair and Theo Gregson made their debut appearances and quickly slipped into the 5th XV ‘never say die’ attitude. The game was more or less won and lost in the first half. Stowe played into a gale force wind and spent a good 75% of the first half defending in their own 22. The uncontested scrums requested by Uppingham certainly did not help matters as Uppingham were guaranteed possession in all their put-ins. The Stowe tackle count was huge and every single player played his part in restricting Uppingham to just one score. At half-time the boys were in buoyant mood knowing that their first half performance, if matched in the second half would surely give them the edge in this match. From the kick off Pettifer angled his kick beautifully into the bottom corner of Uppingham’s 22. From Uppingham’s line-out which was not straight, Stowe opted for the scrum 15 metres in field. Brown at number 8 picked up and went open. He managed to slip the ball to scrum half and captain Robinson, having sucked in the Uppingham back row and Robinson found a gap and dived over for the equalising try. Pettifer then converted to give Stowe a slender lead. Uppingham rallied well and Stowe’s inability to roll away after the tackle resulted in a string of penalties against, hence even more desperate tackling. When Uppingham could not get through the Stowe defence they tried to go over but every time they did they met the advancing flying flanker Bartolomé who managed to charge the ball down. Stowe scored a try from nothing when Henriques capitalised on an Uppingham handling error mid-way into the Stowe half and managed to slip the ball to Lawal who skipped past the first line of defence and once he was clear there was no stopping him and he made no mistake this time about grounding the ball properly. This was a pulsating game played by two fully committed sides which resulted in a great 12-5 win for Stowe.

Colts C XV vs. Uppingham (A) Won 0 - 31

A fantastic effort from the super Colts C Team, who managed to play uphill and into a ferocious gale in the first half and come out 10 points up. Some superb ball handling in touch conditions saw some forward rumbling as the forwards beat up the opposition in the loose and the backs swung the ball left and right, which ended up in Alexis Lazareff (top try scorer in the school) getting over the line for the first score. Alex Fitzjohn broke through for the second try and once the second half got under way there was never going to be another winner. Superb forward play by the entire, especially captain Rollo Chad, saw Stowe continue to dominate in all phases of the game, and once Jack Vestey took a swift intercept and ran 50 metres to dot down the third try, the writing was on the wall. Another try by Fitzjohn and winger Guy Riches ended the match. Another superb Saturday result from a team which has not lost to another C team this season. Bring on Warwick!

MOM: Rollo Chad
Try scorers: Lazareff, Fitzjohn (x2), Vestey & Riches
Conversions: Forde (3 from 5)

JCB XV vs. Uppingham (A) Won 7 - 36

Playing against a strong wind the first half was a real battle which Stowe should have won 12-0 but an Uppingham clearance from within their 22 ended up (via the hurricane) over our try line and the bounce diddled Will Cowley, so the first half ended 12-7. In the second half we had the wind and ran home convincing winners 36-7, Uppingham never looking like scoring. Special mention has to go to Thabo Nkwana, who played 45 minutes, scoring four tries and saving one. The try he saved was the stuff of legend. An Uppingham centre broke through in the middle of the pitch, twenty yards out; when the centre had five metres left to run a shadow streaked inwards from the wing; as the centre crossed the line he found Thabo in front of him, limpet-like on him, falling backwards with him - and the ball never touched the ground. Breath-taking.

MOM: Nkwana
TS: Nkwana 4, Roxburgh, Bell,
Conversions: Browne (3)

JCC XV vs. Uppingham (A) Won 0 – 54

Glad to report a very good win against the "Old Enemy" Uppingham and in their own back yard. We knew that Uppingham had not a very good season so far, so intended to set about them very hard early on. To be fair they defended well but eventually gave in. We were up by 34 at half time. Another 20 added by the end, a great afternoons work.

Tries by: Ed Hopkinson x 3, Oscar Marment, Ben Boscawen, Kai Komai, Theo Shepherd-Smith, Felix Spooner and Ben Ter Haar x 2. Conversions Monty Curran x 2.
MOM: Pierre Carrelet.

3rd XI v. Cheltenham

Being only able to play ten men due to illness, this was always going to be the toughest match of the season. The opposition were a slick, well-drilled side and it was clear from the outset that we were going to have to work hard. However, our defence rose to the occasion, with Oswald proving to be a formidable force in goal. Berner was just as solid in Defence, clearing the ball effectively from the D at every opportunity. During Sixteens, we tended to take the ball across the top of the D, which meant that the opposition were able to intercept far too easily. However, the opposition's Attack were both skilled and relentless and we were ultimately unable to prevent them from finding the back of the net. Half-time saw us one-nil down, but still very much in with a chance, given the amount of effort that we were putting in.

The second half saw us beginning to tire. B. Wallersteiner as Centre Mid demonstrated an impressive work rate, encouraging the team to drive forward. However, our Attack lost impetus and as a result we were unable to convert any of our opportunities. However, Colson showed moments of inspiration and it was unfortunate that she was unable to convert her run on goal. We were no longer able to hold of such a skilled and determined Attack and despite our best efforts, Cheltenham found the back of the net several more times. As we look forward to our next match, we need to ensure that we maintain our composure on the ball, as well ensuring that each individual maintains their focus throughout. It was noticeable that the goals came during the moments during which our concentration lapsed, although this is not to imply that I was not thoroughly impressed with the level of effort that the girls put in.

Girls U14A/B XI vs. Mill Hill U15A/B XI (H) Won 5 - 0

It took a while for the team to settle as it was a new combination of girls that were playing in this fixture. Goal opportunities were evenly matched until Isabella Muirhead managed to slip the ball past the keeper. This lifted the pace of the match with Stowe pushing forward at every chance. Captain Francesca Knight managed to escape from goal for half the match enjoying her role as sweeper. Jemima Chauveau was outstanding at centre midfield absolutely nothing got past her and she also managed to open up their defence with strong accurate through balls. Two more goals were scored during goal mouth scrambles bringing the match to 3-0 at half time. We substituted some fresh players in for the next half including Jessica Burke at Left Attack. This proved to a wise decision as she scored her first goal ever! followed by her second goal ever! Well played girls, I look forward to our last match of the season next week playing Oundle at home.

player of the match: Jemima Chauveau
goal scorers: Isabella Muirhead 2, Sorrell Fenwicke-Clennell, Jessica Burke 2

YA XI vs. Oundle (H) Lost 2 - 4

It was a thrilling end to end match, where Stowe played some of their best hockey of the year. All members of the team stood out in what was essentially an even contest. Oundle who have been unbeaten this term we sharp and had a good skill level, we matched them and edged certain areas of play. Oscar Williams made one of the best saves of the season with a diving stick save low to his right. Oundle went two nil up then Stowe replied with a well taken goal by Gough just on the half time whistle. Stowe started the second half strongly and got one back through a Phillips deflection. It was then tight stuff until he last 10 when Oundle put us under pressure and scored from a couple of short corners.

A well contested affair, where Stowe demonstrated some excellent hockey. I think that a draw may have been a fair result!

YB XI vs. Oundle (H) Drew 0 - 0

If points were scored for sheer grit and determination then this side would have won the game easily. As it was we did well to cling onto a draw. The first half was an even contest with both teams sharing the possession and chances at goal. Ben Barrett had a good game at right midfield and linked well with Oli Kenyan on the wing and we created a couple of decent chances.

The second half however was a different story. Oundle piled the pressure right from the whistle nearly scoring within the first few minutes. A series of short corners followed and some fine saves from Caio in goal kept us in it. Oundle gave us no time on the ball whatsoever and every play forward was over turned. We also started to cough up the ball easily from sixteens. This meant we were under constant pressure. However, the back four of Alfie Marsden-Smedley, Hallam Smith, Freddie Paling and Guy Seedon tackled very sensibly and although they dominated possession, Oundle had only a few chances on goal. All of which were saved by the impressive Caio.

The second half was played almost entirely in our half but time ticked away and eventually the full time whistle went and we had somehow clung on for a draw. Great guts shown by the team, especially against a team that was much bigger and had a huge physical advantage. This side remains unbeaten since the second week of the season and they should take great heart from this performance.

MOM: The entire back four and goal keeper.

YC XI vs. Oundle (H) Drew 2 - 2

The boys managed to retain their unbeaten status with some very hard work and talent. All players, well-captained by Patrick Robinson, put in the necessary effort in this challenging match. The highlight of the match undoubtedly has to be Thomas Johnson's speed, precision and determination, which led to him scoring Stowe's two goals on his debut.

MOM: Johnson
GS: Johnson 2

YE XI vs. Oundle (H) Lost 1 - 3

A game played on grass brought out an old-fashioned match full of enjoyment for the boys and numerous supporters. Sadly Stowe started slowly and were two goals down before they knew what hit them. Thankfully Stowe galvanised themselves and put in some wonderful and prolonged attacks. Nothing was going for them in front of goal despite Moor and Allen careering up the pitch and almost camping out in the opposition’s D. Unfortunately Oundle scored on the break with the last touch before half time. The boys picked themselves up at half time and won the second half 1 – 0 with a wonderful solo effort from Moor. Back to training next week and a chance to work on positioning.

U15 Midlands Tournament Results

Stowe started off the day with St. Helens St. Katharine’s; they had a slow start taking the better part of the first half to really get into the game. At half, the score was 2-0 in favour of St. Helens St. Katharine’s. The girls came back strong in the second half, Annabel Rushton scored Stowe’s first goal followed by Tilly Upton to tie the game. Thanks to Ella Womersley in cage as well as a strong defence, St. Helens St. Katharine’s was unable to score in the second half, ultimately resulting in a two all draw.

For the following five games, Stowe was not able to bring home a win. While Tilly Upton and Tessa Horan managed to score one goal each, it was not enough to win the game, final score was 5-2 Wycombe Abbey. The pair each put a goal in vs. Malvern St. James but managed to fall a goal short resulting in a 3-2 win for Malvern. Bedford and Moreton Hall were of similar results. Tilda Bevan and Valerie Madojemu each found the net, and although the defence stepped up, Bedford was still able to score four, ending in a 4-2 loss for Stowe. Tessa Horan was the lone scorer in the Moreton Hall game leaving the score 5-1 Moreton Hall.

Stowe finished the tournament on a positive note beating Piper’s Corner 5-0. Annabel Rushton, Lizzy Witkowski, and Tessa Horan all scored one each. Tilly Upton came up big with two goals while the defence came together to shut down Piper’s attack.

Junior Midlands Tournament – U14 XII

The U14’s experienced their first game of lacrosse today at the Midland Schools Tournament and showed how talented they are as they held their own against every other school that had entered. With most of our girls being pitched against teams that have played since the age of 11 we were extremely proud of the way they performed.

In the very first game against St Helens and St Katherine’s they experienced aggression that is impossible to appreciate when you are just learning the basic skills. However ours rose to the occasion and determined play by Asthina Badcock, Polly Stuart-Mills and Caprice Critchley meant that the opposition never really settled. A final score of 3-3 was far better than we could have ever imagined and a great start to the day. Our next game provided us with an excellent win of 4-0 over Malvern St James; Milla Harvey Scholes and Aleksia Zivanovic were ruthless in front of goal and we were certainly not looking like a team who was new to the game any longer!

Playing Wycombe Abbey was always going to be tough, but you can imagine their surprise when we scored first! The first half produced enough chances for us to be 2 goals up at half time as we missed two perfect chances in front of goal. As it was we went in 2-2! However a series of errors in the 2nd half when we had girls sent off for rough checks meant they got the upper hand, but no one should feel they are out of our reach!

A pleasing win against Bedford by 2 goals to 0 and then Pipers by 3 goals to 1 meant we were sitting in a strong position over all. Milla as top goal scorer with 7 goals, Aleksia had 5 and Millie Bromley-Davenport with 2, but there were so many outstanding performances. Pippa Stacey on the wing attack causing the opposition problems with her determination and refusal to ever be beaten, Caprice Critchley and Jeannie Gibbs for their constant runs in to attack setting up chances for our homes. Polly and Asthina for their aggressive attack, interceptions and amazing stick checks and both Goalkeepers – Izzy Oliver and KJ Cecil Pritchard for some fantastic saves and long clears up in to midfield.

A disappointing 0-1 loss to Moreton Hall showed how close we were to coming second behind Wycombe Abbey. We had as much possession but one goal separated the two sides in the end.

Final results:
V St Helens and St Katherine’s 3-3
V Malvern 4-0
V Wycombe Abbey 2-5
V Bedford 2-0
V Pipers Corner 3-1
V Moreton Hall 0-1

We were placed 4th with 19 points and all girls should feel very proud of their efforts today.
