Girls U14 Buckinghamshire County Champions 2011!

The U14A team won the U14 County Finals at Stowe defeating Sir William Borlase (1-0), Royal Latin (2-0) and Beaconsfield High School (1-0) to take their place in the Regional Round of the Nationals next month.

In the first match Stowe were able to apply lots of pressure to the Sir William Borlase defence and had a couple of early chances but, in such a short game, the goals are needed! After 10 minutes the effort paid off and Kelly-Jo scored her trademark goal from the left enabling us to relax a little. However, SWB came back with a strong counter-attack and Daisy dived on the goal line to make a fantastic save - (the weekend goal keeping course paid off!!)

The next game was against Royal Latin who we draw 0-0 with in the North Bucks round. Jemima Grant and Caprice Critchley made some impressive breaks with Jemima scoring a cracking early goal. The second goal came from a short corner with a great strike from Polly giving Jemima Fitzjohn the chance to score from a re-bound.

In final game against Beaconsfield High School the team kept up the high intensity, supporting the ball carrier and working tirelessly to track back. Jeanie Gibbs scored a great goal to take the lead after 10 minutes which we now had to hold on to. Daisy, once again, made an awesome save which we were sure was going in!

We won all our games without conceding a goal which is a commendable achievement. Everyone make a significant contribution to the team's success but a particular mention goes to Caprice (captain) and Jemima Grant who were the extremely dominant in midfield.

Well done to:- Daisy Price, Caprice Critchley, Jemima Grant, Polly Stuart-Mills, Amelia Bromley-Davenport, Kelly-Jo Cecile-Pritchard, Isabella Muirhead, Philippa Stacey, Anna Fox, Jemima Fitzjohn; Jeanie Gibbs; Jemima Chauveau; Isobel Oliver

Girls U18 County Finals

Girls 1st XI vs. Akeley Wood (A) Won 0 – 4

A great comeback, after losing to AW in the North County Qualifying rounds. Stowe started brilliantly, laying the ghosts of their previous encounter to rest. They played some of the best hockey they have played this season in this game and all of the girls contributed hugely.

Goals - 2 x Alice Hughes, 1 x Charlie Lechmere & 1 x Claudia Bett
MOM - Alice Hughes

Girls 1st XI vs. SWB (A) Lost 2 – 1

In a much more physical and challenging match, Stowe conceded a goal in the first half. The team rallied together fought hard for their equaliser, which was a superb goal by Lucy, going one on one with the SWBGS keeper before being taken out and finishing on the floor and the ball in the back of the goal. The high skill level of the Borlase team was too much for our defence and despite excellent keeping by Georgia Stone, Stowe conceded late on in the game.

Goals - 1 x Lucy Horan
MOM - Lucy Horan

Girls 1st XI vs. DCHS (A) Lost 3 – 2

This match came 3 minutes after the end of the Borlase and match and as a result our team were extremely tired. The skilful Challenor's team began to exert great pressure on the Stowe 'D' and a well worked goal opened the scoring. Stowe tried tirelessly to keep them out and the counter-attack hockey played by Stowe was outstanding, leading to both goals. Challenor's continued to press and managed to get the winner in the last 5 minutes, to leave Stowe agonisingly close to going through.

Goals - 1 x Lechmere & 1 x Horan
MOM - Becca Dale

Player of the Tournament - Laura Welford.

Stowe were brilliant in all three games and should be very proud of their efforts against some excellent hockey sides.

U15B XI vs. Bloxham (H) Won 3 - 1

We had the best game of our season so far against Bloxham today. The girls played a great passing game, especially between the midfield and the forwards. The energy was high and they really fought for every ball. Some brilliant finishes by Lucy Oswald on short corners, scoring 2 of our goals. And an excellent game from Alice Gurr and Fenella Barrons. Well done girls.

Goals: Lettice Rothschild and Lucy Oswald x2
Mom: Lucy Oswald

Girls U14B VII vs. Beachborough U13A VII (H) Drew 1 - 1

Today was a great opportunity for our U14's to play against Beachborough, especially for those girls who joined from the neighbouring prep school in September (Anna Bevington, Annie Linnell and Maddie Jordan). We played two 7-aside matches with predominantly our U14B team supported by a couple U14A team, including Daisy the GK. The Beachborough A team were strong, with two particularly dominant players in the midfield, and in the first half both team shared equal pressure with us just taking the edge with a goal from Izzy Oliver. Beachborough were more dominant in the second half with the Stowe girls finding it difficult to adapt to a half pitch game where they could have used the width a lot more! Daisy Price had a fantastic game as goal keeper, facing over 6 short corners and constant pressure from the Beachorough forwards, only letting one slip past which saved the score line, holding Beachborough to a 1 - 1 draw!

Goal Scorer: Izzy Oliver
Player of the Match: Daisy Price

Girls U14C VII vs. Beachborough U13B VII (H) Won 6 – 2

In this game, Beachborough took an early lead as the Stowe girls took a little while just to settle into the game and their positions. However, they soon stepped up and Olivia scored to equalise. Annie then made a good run on the right to score against her old school! Beachborough then came back at us with a good break to put us back to level at 2-2. Just before half time, Jemima Fitzjohn came on and was effective in creating space for the forwards and scored to take the edge the 3-2. In the second half Olivia came back on for Jemima and soon scored again as centre forward. I left the girls to make the last change with a few minutes to go (whilst I watched the tense match on the other pitch!), and before I knew it Jemima had scored 2 quick goals to leave the final result at 6-2. Despite the score line, it was an evenly match game played in great spirit.

Goal Scorers: Olivia Walters (2), Annie Linnell, Jemima Fitzjohn (3)
Player of the Match: Olivia Walters

TENNIS

Boys Aegon Tennis – Alcester

Boys 1st IV v Alcester (A) Lost 4 - 2

We were able to put out a stronger team of Arthur Hobhouse, Andrey Drumov, Imran Momen and Will McGovern. All the team put in a fantastic performance and 100% effort by all. Congratulations to Will on winning his singles. This is now the end of the round robin section of the tournament and the school from our group that go forward to the next round is Warwick. This is the first time we have ever entered this national event and the boys have been please to have the opportunity to have some competitive play against other schools in this term.

LACROSSE

1st XII vs. Wellington (H) Won 13 – 2.

Coming off of a victorious weekend, the Stowe 1st team did not play up to their standards against Wellington. We scored the first 2 goals of the game and then allowed Wellington to answer back. The first half the offence played very lackadaisical not taking advantages of the opportunities that Wellington was giving them. Stowe defence was lacking in one on one defence. After our half time discussion, we played to a higher standard. Claudia had 6 goals on the day and Pippa Farr led the defence with 2 groundballs and 2 caused turnovers! Stowe won 13 - 2.

MOM: Claudia Button and Pippa Farr

2nd XII vs. Wellington (H) Won 8 – 1

On Thursday a mixture of 2nd team players and beginners took on Wellington’s 2nd team. Izzy Boorman was at centre and won the majority of draw controls. Lily Comyn had two draw controls that were flicked to her by Izzy Boorman, along with 2 goals and an interception. Third former, Cameron Nix, found the back of the net once as well. Louise Stopford scored the first two of the match and would have had a third if she had not stepped into the goalie crease. Bella Kelly was able to find the back of the net twice! Ella Womersley stepped into goal minutes before the game and was able to save 9 shots in total, three of which were rapid point blank shots. Overall having most of the girls never playing together, it was a very success day of lacrosse for Stowe, the final score being Stowe 8 Wellington 1.

MOM: Lily Comyn and Ella Womersley

HOCKEY

U16 Regional Finals

Excitement and pre-tournament nerves mingled at Woking Hockey Club at 10.30am as this tight knit team warmed up for a day's competition against the other best under 16 teams of Surrey, London, Berkshire and Oxfordshire...

Game 1 vs. Alleyn's School (winner of the London division)

Won 3 - 0

The first 10 minutes saw the best hockey we've played all season and we were 2-0 up within 12 mins. Accurate and strong passing completely outclassed Alleyn's in the first half, with some well executed short corners from Horan and Clark then a Madojemu solo effort. Looking good here...

Game 2 vs. Headington (Oxfordshire runners up)

Drew 1 - 1

We conceded early in spite of having the better of the first half then got increasingly tense as the minutes ticked by and therefore stopped thinking about things when we got into their D. Val calmed some nerves with 5 minutes to go. About 7 short corners in the last quarter, nothing going in. Painful to watch. A frustrating draw.

We find out a few mins afterwards that Wellington have been beaten 3-0 by Alleyn's. Slightly deflated morale gets a boost at this news as we realise that Wellington not as strong as we thought and are probably there for the taking. Still nervous about the fact that we need a win to go through. But then remember that it's not supposed to be easy at this stage of the nationals...

Game 3 vs. Wellington College (Berkshire winners)

Won 4 - 2

Scrappiest hockey, strong oppo, tired legs, but somehow we won in convincing style.

In team talk beforehand it's agreed that at all costs we try to avoid conceding first so that we're not chasing the game like last one. In first five minutes their striker smashes one home off a short corner to make it 1-0 down...

Scrappy goal just before half time - put away again by the majestic Madojemu – sees us 1-1 at the change of ends.
'Who wants this more, girls?' 'Don't travel back later regretting not giving your all in the next 20 mins' is the chat.

Whereupon Tilly 'the tormentor' Upton takes it upon herself to rocket us into the next stage of the competition (as well as silencing a hitherto very loud bevy of Wellington parents on the sideline) with not one, nor two, but three goals scored in quick succession (two from peachy short corner routines) within 10 minutes of half time. Breath-taking to watch. A memorable victory of which the girls can be very proud.

GS: Upton 3, Madojemu 3, Horan 1, Clark 1
Player of the tournament: Tilly Upton
