U14 North Bucks County Tournament at Stowe School

Congratulations to the U14A team who won the North Bucks County tournament on Tuesday! They played extremely well as a team, working as a cohesive group, remaining composed on the ball and taking every opportunity to score goals. The first game was against Akeley Wood (W 2-0). A great drive from Philippa led to a goal from Jemima Fitzjohn within the 1st minute of play - a perfect start! We kept control of the game and after 10 minutes Jemima Grant and Caprice Critchley, at midfield, worked together to give Kelly-Jo the opportunity the score her first goal of the day! The next match was against Thornton (W 3-0) and again the team were focused and played some impressive hockey, passing the ball and making some key tackles. Kelly-Jo scored 2 goals on the rear post and Polly Stuart-Mills made a great strike from a short corner which was helped in by Issy Muirhead to take us to a comfortable 3-0 win. After a game off, we met the strongest opposition of the day, Royal Latin (D 0-0). We had identified their key players and marked them tightly which was very effective. Whilst we dominated most of the play we couldn't create a goal - (we look forward to playing them again, as runners-up, next week in the County Finals!) In the final game against Aylesbury High School we knew we had to score a lot of goals to create the biggest goal difference enabling us to go through as winners (Royal Latin had already beaten them 6-0!). In a 15 minute match we managed to score 8 goals! It was a great way to finish the afternoon and with our 13 goals to Royal Latin's 9 we were the winners! It was also very pleasing not to concede a goal too! This was a very encouraging performance and we will play the finals on Tuesday for a place in the Regionals next term! Well done!

Girls U18 County Tournament at Stowe School

Stowe v Akeley Wood lost 1-0
Stowe v Royal Latin won 5-0

The tournament took a while to start with all 3 teams waiting for Aylesbury High to arrive and for Royal Latin to pick up their goal keeping kit. This sluggish start was reflected in our first 10 minutes of the match v Akeley Wood as we played poorly and barely could pass the ball to each other. Akeley took the lead after a poor transfer and this would prove to be the only goal of the game. We did respond and play better but failed to beat a decent goal keeper.

Stowe then had to win Royal Latin and started strongly playing some great attacking hockey. Lucy Horan scored a great team goal, Steph Robinson scored 2 at the far post, Lucy Horan another tap in from a well executed short corner.

Overall we finished 2nd and qualified for the county tournament next week. Some hard training is needed between now and then building on where we finished at the last game. Lessons need to be learnt from today about starting better.

RUGBY

Daily Mail Cup

1st XV vs. AGS (H) Drew 3 - 3

Aylesbury proceed through to the next round of the Cup on the away rule.

Stowe struggled to find a foothold in the first half with some poor execution of basic skills and a lack of ball retention. Turnovers and a lack of discipline cost the side much needed field position.
In the second half Stowe camped on the opposition’s line but some poor decision making prevented Stowe taking the lead. In what was always going to be a tight match Jake Olley put Stowe ahead but almost instantly the visitors hit back with their own. A nail biting finish saw Olley just fall short of the bar with the last kick of the game.

Aegon Boys Senior Schools Tournament

Boys 1st IV vs. Warwick (A) Lost 6-0

The result of the boys first ever match in the Aegon Senior Schools Tournament sadly ended in defeat. Our team were Toby Cole, Andrey Drumov, Imran Momen & Will McGovern. All the boys fought very hard and the score does not reflect the result. Many games were very close but Warwick just had the upper hand. Many thanks to Toby who came in as a last minute replacement as our captain had a late call up for Rugby.

WATERPOLO

Senior Nationals

The senior team made plate semi finals of the English schools with several players missing. It was good though to place our U16's into the fold but, we found it hard this week with Bedford Modern and City of London being too strong for us.
We were able to get a draw with Ed Pettifer firing a late penalty shot high into the Cheltenham goal.

U16 Nationals

The U16's made the plate semi finals by beating Northampton and St Paul’s schools. We were hoping this year to go to the Cup but a rugby injury put our best player out and we had to play our third choice Goal keeper.

This was again hard for the team but we did considerably well with new players in the team from the junior ranks. Well Done to our goalie - Leo Marmion from Cobham house. He was able to make some good saves. Toby Pemberton got his call up and played well in a defensive roll.

LACROSSE

1st XII vs. RGS AO (A) Won 1 – 7

It was apparent that we were too strong for RGS and so agreed that all our goals would come from set plays and we would not allow any fast breaks. This demands quite a lot of discipline as it is all too easy to beat a player and then have to take the ball behind the goal and set up a play in a more slow attack. However, the attack were patient and as a result every goal was assisted!

We did not start well with basic errors leading to a loss of possession on a number of occasions. RGS had a number of athletes and probably won the midfield area, but as we started to settle our passes became more controlled and clinical shooting gave us a 4-0 lead at half time with goals from Megan Duckett, Lottie Phillips, Charlotte Berrill and Claudia Button. The 2nd half continued with both sides having chances but Stowe making the most of their attacking options. Caroline Thompson played exceptionally well in defence, making crucial checks and interceptions. With 3 more goals scored and one against the final score was 7-1 to Stowe.

Scorers: Claudia 3, Lottie: 2, Charlotte: 1, Megan: 1
Assists: Megan 4, Haz Goffman 1, Claudia 2

Girls U16A XI vs. Tudor Hall (A) Won 1 – 2

The U16's we're reunited to take on Tudor Hall in a thrilling game. The girls began a little uneasy, probably due to having to watch the U15's play before. However due to some great team play Alice Hughes stepped up and scored the opening goal to put us 1-0 up. A few minutes before we scored however India Cornish took a deflected ball off the keeper to the eyebrow and was taking to hospital for a check over, luckily she was fine. The half time whistle went with no change in the score. Marina Oswald had a great first half at centre back keeping Tudor's attacks at bay. The half time team talk seemed to have hit home with the girls playing with style and flair, Ella looking particularly dangerous whenever she picked the ball up. Unfortunately Tudor Hall managed to get one back making the score 1 - 1, and they continued to look dangerous. The girls showed what being a stoic is all about and dug deep to fight and fight managing to get the winning goal, scored by Lucy Horan, with 10 minutes to go. The rest of the game the girls showed really determination and hung on for a 2-1 victory. You could see what it meant to the girls after and it was fantastic to be a part of it.

GS: Hughes & Horan
MOM: Marina Oswold

Girls U15A XI vs. Malvern St. James (H) Won 8 – 0

A convincing display against a weaker-than-hoped-for opposition. Having worked hard all week in training, we were never put under any real pressure but nevertheless came up with some excellent hockey and some great goals. Highlights included four goals from Dickson, a really good match from Lottie Hodson coming off the bench 15 minutes in and a great strike from the top of the D from Tilly to score our 3rd. Confidence building before the regionals…

MOM: Hodson
GS: Dickson 4, Upton, Carne, Rushton, Madojemu

Girls U14A XI vs. Malvern St James (H) Won 6 - 0

The U14A played well dominating the games from the outset. They were confident with the ball and closed down the opposition early, setting a strong press. Caprice scored a great goal from a well executed short corner, this was followed by a superb finish on the left from Kelly-Jo. Philippa played particularly well as left midfield creating space with ball and making some impressive tackles. Issy scored the final goal of the first half from a deflection off a short corner to take us to 3-0. At half time we talked about keeping the width to attack outside the middle channel and to use this as a chance to practice transferring the ball. In the second half Anna Fox had a great game at right defence and Jeanie Gibbs stepped up to play in the forwards scoring two convincing goals. Kelly-Jo scored once again on the left to end the match at 6-0. We look forward to the County Finals on at Stowe on Tuesday.

Goal Scorers: Caprice Critchley, Kelly-Jo Cecile-Pritchard (2), Issy Muirhead, Jeanie Gibbs (2)
Player of the Match: Philippa Stacey

Girls U14B XI vs. Tudor Hall (H) Won 3 - 2

Despite being under a lot of pressure from Tudor Hall during the first half Olivia Walters managed to score following a quick break and goal mouth scramble and we stormed into the lead. Francesca Knight again played brilliantly ensuring that the score stayed at 1-0 until half time. We started the second half with some new players substituted on from our large squad and Camilla Harvey-Scholes showed her skill down the left scoring a goal to make us 2-0 up. Play up and down the pitch was fast and furious, the ball travelling quickly from one end to the other. Tudor Hall scored one goal then a second bringing the score to 2-2. Saskia Satchell again worked tirelessly in midfield trying to spread the ball wide on the attack and tackling strongly in defence. During the last five minutes Sorrell Fenwicke-Clennell suddenly came back to form and scored the decisive goal. We managed to hold off an all out attack from Tudor Hall and breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle went. Really well played girls, you are improving each match and thank you to everyone that played, I feel lucky we have so many keen and talented players.

Player of the match: Francesca Knight ( again! )
Goal scorers: Camilla Harvey-Scholes, Olivia Walters, Sorrell Fenwicke-Clennell

YA XI vs. Uppingham (H) Won 2 - 1

The first U14A win against Uppingham for many years was a hard fought encounter. Stowe deserved their win by generally being more industrious around the pitch. Stowe created several good chances in the first half and managed to put 1 away, with George Markham slotting the ball from close range. Stowe still coughed up the ball too much and didn't work the press as well as I would have liked but they kept on trying, the effort and intensity was pretty good overall and we were rewarded with another George Markham goal 5 minutes into the second half. Uppingham pressed for a while in the second half and scored a consolation goal from a short corner. Stowe held out for a memorable home win against one of our biggest rivals.

Goals - Markham 2
MOM - I thought Seb Stone played well in defence and Sam Riley was back on form. George Markham also made the difference with his 2 goals.

YB XI vs. Uppingham (A) Won 2 - 3

The Yearlings B XI clinched this game with 23 seconds left on the clock.

It was an end to end game but in terms of chances on goal Stowe probably just edged it and deserved the win. Guy Seddon was one of the main reasons for this at centre back. He read signs of danger brilliantly and made some crucial tackles before a meaningful attack on goal could be made.

Up front Jack Hechle, Harry Bunting and Alex Diaconu linked beautifully to apply a lot of pressure on the Uppingham defence. Diaconu eventually scoring all three goals. Special mention must also be made of Ed Tilleard who worked extremely hard in central midfield. He turned many plays over which helped us keep the pressure on Uppingham right until the end and played a significant part as to how we managed to come back from 2 - 1 down to equalise and score the winner within the last five minutes of play.

Brilliant stuff!

GS: Alex Diaconu - 3
MOM: Guy Seddon

YC XI vs. Uppingham (A) Won 1 - 2

A very scrappy first half was followed by a vastly improved second. Faster ball speed and transfer led to some patches of champagne hockey, with a rapier-like attack really starting to get things together. Gregory Atkinson and George Constantinidi scored fine goals which ultimately resulted in our win. However, the man of the match has to go to Oluwaseun Coker who was a rock in defence and midfield. His excellent tackling and precision passing enabled several breakthroughs and saved many an attack from the tough opposition.

MOM: Oluwaseun Coker
GS: Gregory Atkinson, George Constantinidi

YD XI vs. Uppingham (A) Lost 4 - 0

After a fairly even game for most of the match, with some useful midfield play from the Stowe team, the score was still 0-0 with ten minutes to go. The opposition then found form and added all their goals.

MOM: Toby Attard-Manche.

LACROSSE

1st XII vs. St Albans (H) Won 9 – 0

Although Stowe had generally won the encounters in the past, St Albans were always recognised to have a number of athletes in their senior teams and concentration was the key to recording another victory. In preparation for the Malvern game which was to follow, Stowe were keen to practice a number of plays before they had to deal with this strong Malvern team that had already beaten them in the Midlands final earlier on in the season.

Again we played with patience in attack and controlled most areas of the field with our tenacious defending and clinical shooting in front of goal. Claudia Button and Megan Duckett are forging a dangerous partnership with Megan’s pinpoint accuracy and Claudia’s ruthless finishing. Claudia scored 5 goals and Megan assisted 3 and had Malvern been watching they would have been wise to have attempted to take both of them out of the game. The most rewarding factor was the fact that our attack scored goals from plays that we had worked on this week – plays that most teams would dream about being able to play!

Scorers: Claudia 5, Megan 2, Charlotte Cook, Charlotte Berrill 1
Assists: Megan 4, Becky Raeburn 1,

1st XII vs. Malvern (H) Won 5 – 4

This was the game that we had been waiting for………….Malvern are extremely strong this year with a number of Internationals and having already won the Welsh Rally as well as Midland Schools we were going to have to play our best! The game started well with us winning possession from the draw but the play we were trying to score from didn’t work and eventually Malvern won possession and went ahead. At 2 - 0 down we then scored a fantastic goal with a feed from the top of the fan – Megan to Claudia with Charlotte Cook setting a pick on the circle edge. Malvern scored again but an individual goal from Emma Saric with a top corner shot made it 2 - 3 going in to half time.
The half time chat produced defensive changes with Looch Trevor being given the task of marking their Welsh international who was causing us problems in midfield. We now knew that we had 15 minutes to turn the game around – every ball had to be ours – we could not afford to give up the chase when their athletes sprinted through midfield and we had to take our chances in front of goal. Malvern then went 4 - 2 up at the start of the 2nd half – but we never gave up. Every single girl on the team had moments of sheer brilliance – Looch marked their top player in a way that only Looch can; Emma Saric ran herself in to the ground; Caroline Thompson pulled off last minute checks when the opposition were almost certain to score; Priscilla Powell came out and checked a Malvern attack when our defender had been beaten; Katkin Farr took a one handed interception when Malvern were beating us in midfield, Charlotte Cook and Emily Beatty worked and worked and worked to get us back the ball and give us opportunities to score. Then at 4 - 2 we started to get the upper hand – Cookie fed to Claudia – goal to make it 4 - 3. Then with a few minutes left – Becky fed Claudia to make it 4 - 4. The seconds were ticking away and with our last chance of the game Claudia had the ball behind goal – shouted ‘ Megan drive’ – one pass and Megan put the ball in the top corner! 5 - 4 Stowe and the final whistle went! We had won!

Scorers: Claudia 3, Emma Saric 1, Megan 1
Assists: Claudia 1, Cookie 1, Becky 1, Megan 1

3rd XV v Bromsgrove (H) Won 24 – 10

The first half saw a closely contested match with Stowe coming out on top after a well worked try saw Charlesworth go over in the corner. Shortly afterwards, a break by Will Jones allowed Clayton to go over for a converted try. Some lovely interlinking play was let down by the final pass on a couple of occasions and Stowe could not find the 3rd try. Some pressure from Bromsgrove, just before the end of the half, gave them an unconverted score to make the half time score 12 - 5. The second half was highlighted by indiscipline and injuries despite both sides scoring. Clayton went over again after some forwards pressure and, after Bromsgrove crossed again in the corner, Man of the Match Jones, whose breaks throughout the match caused Bromsgrove no end of problems, got his name on the scoreboard with an individual effort and a try under the posts. Both sides struggled to contain their composure as tempers began to fray but Stowe held on to record the win.

Tries: Clayton (2), Jones W., Charlesworth
Cons: Elliott (2)

Man of the Match: Jones W.

4th XV vs. Bromsgrove (H) Won 34 - 0

Bromsgrove started well and played a tight pick and drive game with their forwards. When Stowe gained possession they always looked dangerous and 10 minutes into the game Raeburn went over after some fine inter-play. Pettifer converted well from quite wide out. Stowe continued to dominate with Curran making a powerful break before slipping the ball to Robertson who had enough gas to run clear of the defence and score a fine try which was also converted well by Pettifer. Pettifer then went over in the corner following a passage of play which seemed to involve nearly the whole team. Curran then sealed an impressive first half performance with a well deserved try.
Several substitutions were made in the second half. There were two further scores, the first from Howatson-Tout as he chased down a kick, picked up well and went over in the corner and the second was from Lawal who skipped past several players to score another fine individual try. Bromsgrove never gave up and try as they may the Stowe defence held firm and the team recorded a fine victory playing attractive rugby.

Man-of-the-match: Augusto Bartolomé

Tries: Raeburn, Robertson, Pettifer, Curran, Lawal
Cons: Pettifer (2)

Colts B XV vs. Bromsgrove (A) Won 0 - 45

Dogged defence kept the opposition, out whilst clinical finishing ensured a good win. Special mention in addition to the man-of-the-match must go to Josh MacMillan for his hat trick, Toby Cole for his superb ball skills and vision and Piers Fountain who controlled the game excellently starting for the first time at Fly Half.

MOM: Ellison
Try scorers: MacMillan x3, Cecil, Grossart, Ali and Smiley

Colts C XV vs. Bromsgrove (A) Won 0 - 50

Stowe played a superb match against Bromsgrove in which they dominated in every aspect of the game. Right from the kick off Stowe pushed the opposition back onto the 22 metre line and it wasn't long before Jack Vestey gathered a kick from Tom Forde to score the opening try. From then it was plain sailing as Stowe ran in numerous tries from set pieces and open plays, Clever cross kicks from the fly-half (Forde) gave the winners ample chances to convert, Score they did with two for Guy Riches and two for scrumhalf Harrison Perske. Stowe kept up the pace in the second half with scores from Fitzjohn, Clover & Cox as they powered to an overwhelming victory on away soil.

Try scorers: Fitzjohn, Clover, Vestey, Perske (x2), Riches (x2)

JCB XV vs. Bromsgrove (A) Won 5 – 66

Despite appearing nervous as the game kicked off the Junior Colts B made light work of an intimidating Bromsgrove side showing superior running, handling and organisation. Bromsgrove had several big runners but Stowe did a great job of containing them. Angus Tyrrell turned over a huge amount of ball providing the back line lots to play with. James Macdonald-Buchanan, Tom Young and Kyle Browne did a brilliant job of finding the space outside, unleashing Toby Pemberton and Thabo Nkwana on the unsuspecting defence. William Cowley had an exceptional game at full back, covering every Bromsgrove line break, breaking tackles and evading defenders with ease, earning himself this week's Man of the Match

JCC XV vs. Bromsgrove (A) Won 32 - 0

A polished, very highly-inflated ball made for a multitude of knock-ons in the opening ten minutes, unsettling the Stowe backs and stopping the team from getting into their stride. However, eventually the team started using the Forwards more and shorter passes, rebuilt their confidence, and the points began to come. It was, however, a hard fought match throughout, with a Bromsgrove pack that was substantially heavier than Stowe's. Our good scrummaging techniques were crucial to stop what started off as a great deal of pressure being brought to bear on our backs. Ben Boscawen, Pierre Carrelet and Kai Komai, three of our bigger, faster players, were instrumental in turning the tide, and deserve full praise, as does Felix Spooner for his match-sealing hat trick of tries.
