RUGBY

2nd XV vs. Haberdashers’ Aske (H) Won 37 – 20

Stowe received kickoff.
•Weak start with silly errors, good mark under pressure from Smith relieves the early tension.
•Too many mistakes! Backs and forwards. Shocking decision from opposition 13 is the only reason we are not 7-0 down.
•Haberdashers mistakes only thing keeping Stowe in the game. Strong leadership needed to grab this game.
•That's better, solid set and Woodward box kicks to clear.
•Scrappy rugby, both sides, early stages the teams are sparring, looking for weaknesses.
•Stowe starting to put some stuff together. Good driving from Hobhouse and Barran moving the backs better.
•Try! Raymond busts through the middle off the shoulder of Barran. 7-0.
•Brilliant play! Smith slices through the middle and offloads to Rudd, play slowed down, penalty Stowe.
•Raymond lets a tackle stray high, penalty kicked 7-3.
•Another nice backs moves puts Rudd through the middle, ball is lost in the tackle, Stowe need to follow up their good play.
•Another penalty, now 7-6.
•Forwards carrying well, Phipps proving hard to bring down. Penalty Stowe, Sergeant makes it 10-6.
•Very solid play, good kick from Woodward, good chase from Page, Stowe attack from the lineout, but lose the ball and Haberdashers clear.
•Half time, one change, Masziak for Hambro-Rabben.
•Slow start, need to tighten up the contact area.
•Poor defence, Haberdashers score after Stowe fail to push up on both sides. Conversion good, 10-13.
•Stowe hit back, great ball carrying from Raymond and Page, just held up, scrum 5.
•Try! Prideaux drives over from short. No extras, 15-13.
•Nesbitt on for Page.
•Try! Scintillating feet from Rudd finished by Smith under the posts. Conversion by Sergeant. 22-13.
•Stowe holding out some tough pressure. Jack Wallis tackling well.
•Stowe crack and Haberdashers score. 22-20.
•Jones on for Woodward.
•Good kick from Sergeant puts Habs under pressure. Penalty Stowe, Sergeant converts 25-20.
•Very tight, kicking exchanges dominating.
•Stowe defence holding well. Barran clears the pressure.
•Try! Josh Masziak continues his scoring streak finishing a long one showing pace from the half way then feet to beat the full back under the posts. Coverted by Sergeant 32-20.
•Try! Great finish to the game! Ball kicked through, gathered by Sergeant to score and put the match out of sight. Well played Stowe final result 37-20.

Scorers: Sergeant, Smith, Prideaux, Masziak, Raymond
Conversions: Sergeant 3
Penalties: Sergeant 2

Man of the match: Henry Rudd

CB XV vs. Haberdashers’ Aske (A) Won 12 - 43

In what was actually a tight game Stowe’s superior organisation won out over the oppositions size and strength. Whilst only enjoying limited possession we proved to be clinical finishers making the most of it and keeping the other team pinned largely in their half through tenacious defending.

MOM: Hiley
Try scorers: Grossart x2, Wentworth-Stanley, Wright, Macmillan, Ali x2

JCC XV vs. Kingham Hill U15A XV (H) Won 44 – 5

Happy to report that our C's had a great win against Kingham Hill today, outplaying them 44-5. Tries by Oscar Marment, Ben Boscawen x 2, Jack Edmonstone, Kai Komai, James Simpson, Jack Keeping, Pierre Carrelet x 3. Conversions; Jack Keeping and Monty Curran.

Kingham started the better, a missed tackle in the third minute put them in for a quick score, which was not converted. Once we discovered that we could out play them, it was one way traffic. Our forwards were very hardworking and won plenty of ball which allowed our backs to out play theirs. Man of the Match; Pierre Carrelet, closely followed by Ed Hopkinson.

HOCKEY

YB XI vs. RGS HW (A) Won 1 – 3

The YB XI kept up their winning trot with an excellent 3 – 1 win over a much improved RGS side who applied a lot of pressure. However, Stowe kept their nerve and RGS had little answer for the front three trio of Diaconu, Bunting and Hechle.

MOM: Diaconu

LACROSSE

1st XII vs. Radley (A) Won 2 - 4

The Stowe girls had a physical match against the Radley boys on Thursday night. We played under the lights at Radley against their first club lacrosse team. The boys played with girls sticks and were able to beat the girls for speed but not skill. Claudia button and Charlotte Berrill had some fantastic connections with each other throughout the game. Caroline Thompson came up with 3 caused turnovers and 4 interceptions for the defence. Coach Wagner played in goal for us making 7 critical saves that kept us in the game! The finally score was 4-2.

Goals: Claudia Button 3,Berrill 1.
MOM: Caroline Thompson

Bucks County Tournament

The girl’s Bucks county lacrosse team played on Saturday at Malvern St. James. The Bucks county team was comprised of Stowe, Wycombe Abbey and Pipers Corner girls. Our first two matches were against Beds and Oxon who we were able to beat pretty easily—both 7-2. The two games to follow would be the toughest competition of the day. Shrops was a close scoring game for the first 5 minutes but Bucks was able to pull away in the second half and win 5-2. Our last game against Worcs, comprised of Malvern St. James girls, would be our true test for the day. It was a physical and close match putting Bucks down within the first few minutes of the game, 3-1. Claudia Button pulled the score closer just before half to make it 3-2. Immediately after half time, the girls quickly scored a goal to tie the game. Bucks come out on top with a 5-4 victory! All the Stowe girls had a great day! Caroline Thompson stood out on the day being a core leader on the defence. Her talk and vision to pick out interceptions was one of the keys we needed to win county.

2nd XII vs. Radley (A) Lost 5 - 3
The Stowe 2nd team girls matched up against Radley’s 2nd team Thursday night. The girls were a bit nervous going into the game because of the physical opposition. The girls were initially intimidated but as the game progressed the girls changed their mentality—going for 50-50 balls, attacking hard to the cage, and tackling the boys. Unfortunately it was not enough, Radley outscored Stowe 5 to 3. Lucy Horan had two amazing goal. Becky Raeburn was able to find the back of the net as well. Overall it was a very successful and friendly game that every player enjoyed

Girls 1st IV vs. Tudor Hall (H) Lost 6 - 7

This is the first time the school has entered into this national event, and what a first match our girls had. At the end of the 4 singles round, we had won 2 and lost 2. So it was all to play for in the 2 doubles matches. Megan Duckett and Charlotte Berrill won their set 6 - 3. Chloe Stewart and Alice Hughes had a titanic battle narrowly loosing out in a very close fought tie-break. The score now at 3 matches all there had to be a tie-break shoot out to decide the winner. The rules state that one player from each doubles pair had to play together. Alice teamed up with Megan and just lost a very tight tie-break 10 -8

Girls 1st XI vs. St. Edwards (H) Lost 0 - 4

Stowe started well against Teddies playing some nice passing hockey however they were unable to generate any pressure up front. Stowe then had to defend numerous short corners that kept being re-awarded after some solid defending. However under pressure Stowe turned the ball over on a 16 and Teddies came through and hit a well struck goal from top circle. The girls then had their best spell passing well amongst the girls and creating a few chances leaving Stowe to go in to half time 1-0 down.

In the second half there was opportunity to counter which lead to nothing and Teddies increased the pressure on our back 4 creating problems for the team. This lead to chances for Teddies where our defence did well and George Stone made some great saves. However the second goal came after a scrap in front of goal and then Teddies ramped up the pressure and scored 2 in the last 10 minutes to take the game away.

Overall a pretty disappointing result as the girls tired in the second half to concede. Lots of effort by the team but a little more guile was needed to transfer the ball round and get the ball out of congestion

MOM Georgia Stone

Girls 2nd XI vs. St Edwards (H) Lost 0 - 1

The match this week proved us as a strong defensive team. We soaked up a lot of pressure in our half of the pitch, unfortunately in the first 20 minutes St Edwards broke through and scored a goal whilst we were on the back foot. After a slow start we managed to create some great movements passing around the back and opening up spaces to go forward. After a motivational half time talk Stowe went out strong and determined to the end. Lucie Wellington and Imogen O'Brien had a solid game as part of the defence line, linking up well with Ellie Pinnock in the midfield. Stowe had a great game making some awesome tackles and stepping up to get the ball back, it was unfortunate we weren't able to score with the opportunities we created.

MOM: Heloise Kleinwort

Girls 3rd XI v. St. Edward's (H) Lost 0 - 4

This was a thrilling match to watch and despite the disappointing score-line, the girls have never played such impressive hockey. The St. Edwards team were more like a well-drilled 2nd XI and we were simply outplayed. However, it was lovely to see all of the elements we have practised in training coming together. I thought that the accuracy and power of our hits have improved considerably, as has our ability to communicate as a team. Star of the show was B. Wallersteiner, who was able to gain possession and then move the ball effectively into space. I. Wallersteiner was also effective on the left wing, transferring the ball efficiently to the forwards.

During the first half we did well to hold the score at 1-0. We had equal possession and we moved the ball far more effectively up the wings than we have done in previous matches. However, the St. Edwards had a skilled and tireless defence meaning that every time we took the ball into the circle, it was effectively cleared. We are now taking free hits far more quickly, but we still need to ensure that we are not sending the ball into a press of opposition when taking Sixteens. Davison and Clark-Hattingh worked extremely hard in defence, but we were eventually defeated by the well-worked short-corners of the attacking side.

Special mention must go to Berner and Oswald who both did a first class job in goal, despite having never played before. There is no doubt that without them, we had suffered an even more resounding defeat.

Girls U15B XI vs. St. Edwards (A) Won 2 - 0

We had a solid game against St. Edwards. It was fairly evenly contested in the first half, but in the second half we started to look like the winning team. This is when the goals game, and we started to create some lovely linking play through the midfield and up to the forwards. Tash Edwards and Flora Marriot had brilliant games up at the front of the pitch, playin a great passing game. The star of the match however was Lily Holland-Bosworth, she defended excellently and used a lot of skill to get us out of some tricky situations at the back. Well done girls.

Goals: Natasha Edwards and Flora Marriot
MOM: Lily Holland-Bosworth

Girls U14A XI vs. St Edward's (A) Drew 2 – 2

A game of two halves! It was always going to be a competitive game and being away at St Edward's we needed to be focused from the outset. St Edward's had strength through the middle and after only 4 minutes they scored with an overload in the D. In an attempt to transfer the ball, we kept passing the ball back and into the middle channel which was too frequently intercepted by St Edward's putting us back into a difficult defending position. Whilst we had some good breaks, with some convincing attacks from Philippa Stacey and Issy Muirhead, we were not able to get the shots on goal. After 16 minutes St Edward's scored again taking the game to 0-2 at half time. We had a good team talk and identified areas to concentrate on for the next half. We started much more convincingly and were giving the ball carrier more support so we could play forward. After 10 minutes Jemima Fitz-John made a great run creating an opportunity for Jeanie Gibbs who scored a 'match changing' goal. This lifted the game and we became more dominant, although the threat from the St Edward's forwards was significant. We then had another break leading to an impressive finish from Kelly-Jo to bring us level. We then worked ours socks off for the last 8 minutes, in particular Jemima Grant, Polly Stuart-Mills, Mille Bromley-Davenport and Jeanie, to prevent another goal against us. Jemima Fitz-John stayed very high in case a ball came through and although we had a coupe of chances we had to settle for a well-deserved draw. It is always extremely pleasing to come back from 2 goals down and the team performance in the 2nd half bodes well for the county tournament at Stowe on Tuesday. Well done!

Goal Scorers: Jeanie Gibbs; Kelly-Jo Cecile-Pritchard
Players of the Match: Jeanie Gibbs, Jemima Grant

Girl's U14B XI vs. St. Edwards (A) lost 2 - 1

The so far undefeated record of the U14B team was broken this weekend. The first half of the match was definitely rather one sided with our defence constantly under pressure. Due to an outstanding performance by the extremely talented ( and fearless ) goalkeeper Francesca Knight and stalwart defensive play the score remained at 0-0 at the end of the first half. St Edward's started strongly in the second half and managed to slip the ball into the back of the net following a goal mouth scramble. We attacked down the right side of the pitch just as practiced during the week but it was following a switch to the left finding Georgina Walker that our equaliser was scored. During a tense final 5 minutes the opposition managed to get behind our exhausted defence to score again bringing the score to a final 2-2-1. The girls need to be congratulated on a superb effort despite being several key players short due to illness and injury. I am sure we will be victorious when our full squad take to the pitch next weekend. Special mention must go to Hannah Marshall for stepping in at the last minute and achieving the most improved player award.

Player of the match: Francesca Knight
Goal scorer: Georgina Walker

YC XI vs. The Leys (H) Won 4 - 0

After a relatively slow start, the team gelled together nicely and exuded slick passes as if they were playing on ice. Strong defence from Harry Norris (GK) and a variety of C and D team players gave rise to a flurry of successful attacks. Special mentions go to Nai Chi for a couple of superb finishes and Charlton Kerr and Alistair Martin for enabling several breakthroughs. No losses to date; this team looks unstoppable.

MOM: Alistair Martin
GS: Tsai 2, Martin 1, Kerr 1

YA XI vs. The Leys (H) Lost 1 - 2

Stowe made a good attempt to over turn the 6-1 loss we received at The Leys 3 weeks ago. Stowe certainly started brightly and put The Leys under considerable pressure. Stowe scored first with a well taken George Markham goal. Stowe then continued to dominate but failed to convert anymore chances. In the second half Stowe again started well but then came under increasing pressure from the opposition. Stowe went into their shells for a ten minute period where the Leys dominated, and they struggled to keep control of the ball and ball turnover was at its highest. During this time a few panicky moments in defence saw the Leys equalise and then go ahead. Stowe then finished the match strongly and could have snuck an equaliser at the death.

A much much better performance than last time. Good performance from George Markham and Oscar Williams in goal.

RUGBY

2nd XV vs. Trent College (H) Won 36 - 5

Stowe kick off to start the match.
Poor kick not 10m, Trent gifted an attacking scrum to start the match.
Early exchanges even, knock-ons dominating the early play.
Try! Great try from Charlie Sergeant, following a devastating 40m lineout drive, Sergeant cuts through and beats the fullback, 5-0.
Try! Another brilliant try, solid lineout drive followed by a slick switch bringing Sergeant through the line again. Devastating play from the centre, 10-0.
Stowe defence and attack looking excellent. The lineout drive is strangling Trent.
Try! Chaplin bursts through the middle off the shoulder of Barran and goes under the posts. Note it was from 22m out NOT from the half way line Chappers! Sergeant converts 17-0.
Try! Beautiful try set up by storming run from Prideaux. Backs handle well for a Hambro-Rabben try out wide. Sergeant converts. 24-0.
Stowe defence swarming over Trent.
Try! Great kick from Barran on a penalty and forwards drive over. Try for Wace, Sergeant converts. 31-0.
Half time changes Masziak for Rimell, Jones for Sutton and Cleary for Nesbitt.
Stowe attacking with real confidence.
Try to Trent, unfortunate interception against the run of play. 31-7.
Try! Excellent play, driving play from forwards unleashes backs, slick, wide passing puts Paine over in the corner. 36-7.
Excellent running from Masziak, strong attacking but last pass keeps going down.
Play is scattered, lots of penalties going against Stowe.
Mistakes still stopping Stowe finishing some fantastic play.
That's it, good performance win 36-5.

Scorers: Sergeant 2, Hambro-Rabben, Paine, Chaplin, Wace
Conversions: Sergeant 3

Man of the match: Jack Chaplin

Colts C XV vs. St Paul's MK (H) lost 0 - 7

During this utterly thrilling and tense match, the Colts C time fought bravely from the first kick-off against a side comprising of far bigger players. Stowe threw everything into attack in the first half, putting St Paul's on the back foot and comprehensively winning the battle for territory. With St Paul's pinned in their own half, Stowe actually managed to scramble over the line not once but twice from a forwards move, only to be held up both times. St Paul's desperate defence paid off as Stowe were forced back, but with a score-line of 0-0 at half time, Stowe seemed on the ascendancy.

The second half was a titanic clash of wills, with both sides tackling, rucking and scrummaging for all they were worth. St Paul's powerful centres simply could not find a way through the patient tackling of Tom Forde (with a try-saving diving tackle on the left wing), Toby Wightman and Jack Vestey, while Stowe's wingers tried in vain to run around an all-encompassing St Paul's defence. With Stowe slowly losing ground, it was only in the dying minutes that St Paul's managed the closest of touch-downs on the try-line itself, giving themselves that all-important lead. With 3 minutes remaining, Stowe battled valiantly and even camped out in the St Paul's 22-yard area for the last two minutes of the game, but the final break-through ultimately eluded the brave Colts side.

Congratulations to all who played today - a brilliant spectacle.

MOM: Tom Forde

JCB XI vs. Trent (A) Won 45 - 0

Despite the scoreboard declaring that this game was very one sided, it was in fact a game in which the JCBs had to work to score tries. They did not come easily with the forward pack having to exert quite a lot of effort in order to provide clean ball for the backline. Fly half Tom Young and Man of the Match Kyle Browne in the centre did not have a clear path in which to run through with them having to run and move the ball into space to provide the scoring opportunities for Rougier and the wingers. Trent came close to the Stowe try line but some strong defence from Caspar Whitehead, Rex Roxburgh and Angus Tyrrell forced a knock on. Despite their hammering Trent continued to play their best right up until the final whistle which is most commendable.

Try Scorers:

Hunnable
Young
Barth (3)
Nkwana

Conversions:

Kyle Browne (5)

Man of the match:

JCC XV vs. Trent College (A) Won 56 - 0

Conversions

MOM: Oscar Marment

It was a very unequal encounter. From kick-off which we received it was obvious that a determined ball-carrier could make 20 metres before being stopped. Good to see some practised moves coming into play. Well led by Monty, as usual. Oscar led a very spirited forwards demolition.

LACROSSE

1st XII V Uppingham (H) Won 14 – 2

With 6 of our normal 1st team representing Bucks County this weekend, our 1st/2nd team combined to play Uppingham 1st team. However, the spectators were in for a treat as Stowe were ruthless in every department leaving Uppingham to question whether they can match us at this level? Haz Goffman had the game of her career with 6 goals and 4 assists in a 14-2 victory. Charlotte Berrill and Lottie Phillips were clinical in their finishing in front of goal as they came away with 3 goals apiece. However it was Harriet’s feeds and the way she linked with Megan to cause problems everytime we went on attack. At half time we were 10-1 ahead and decided in the half time chat to score goals as a result of setting picks on the Uppingham defence. Possibly the best goal of the game came from a pick set involving Haz, Megan and Charlotte leaving the Uppingham defence only able to watch as the ball hit the back of the net! In defence we were never really tested – Priscilla had 5 saves and Hannah Maxwell had an exceptional game with her midfield domination.

Goal Scorers:
Haz Goffman 6
Lottie Phillips 3
Charlotte Berrill 3
Daisy Ussher 1
Megan Duckett 1
Man of match: Haz Goffman

1st XII vs. Pipers Corner (H) Won 5 – 0

Stowe followed straight on with a shortened match against Pipers and again we dominated from the whistle. Pipers defence were much tighter and their Goal keeper made a number of saves to keep them in the game. However, again, Haz, Megan and Charlotte linked well with them either scoring or assisting goals for each other. Rebecca Raeburn gave us glimpses of what an exceptional athlete she is with her ability to accelerate past defence on many occasions. She scored an excellent goal in the 1st half and was unlucky not to make it 2 in the 2nd half.
In defence we showed our discipline and work ethic with everyone working as a unit and they should be proud of keeping a clean sheet.

Goal Scorers:
Charlotte 2, Haz 1, Tess 1, Becky 1
Assists: Charlotte 1, Megan 2, Haz 1

2nd XII vs. Uppingham (H) Won 10 - 5
On Saturday the Stowe 2nd team played against Uppingham 2nd s. Due to County Trials, the core 2nd was not able to play in this match. The majority of the team had not played together but that did not stop them from wanting to defeat Uppingham. The first half was a bit rocky-- Stowe controlled the tempo of the game but ground balls and arrant passes made it easy for Uppingham to get the ball down the field. Daisy Ussher took control of Stowe’s attacking end putting in 4 goals and having 3 assists. Izzy Borman also shined as she found the back of the net twice along with her was Bella Kelly. Newcomer Louise Stop was able to score off of an 11meter shot! Tilly Salvin and Letticue Carter all had 3 ground balls and 2 interceptions. After being sick for 3 days Jem Phillips was able to hold off Uppingham’s attack making 5 saves. The final score was Stowe 10 Uppingham 5. Overall it was a great day of lacrosse for Stowe and a wonderful experience for certain individuals to show off their skill and talent!
