Cricket (16 June)
Yearlings B v Cokethorpe (A) Won by 7 wickets.
Cokethorpe won the toss and elected to bat first, making 53 all out from 14.3 overs. Stowe chased, and comfortably made 55-3 from 6.3 overs.
A very fine and cloudless day out at Cokethorpe was the location for a tremendous win for Stowe, as an amalgam B/C side bowled and fielded with much purpose and effect on a very pretty ground. Cokethorpe were denied the opportunity to build a good total through an entire innings of consistently good bowling from Stowe, and wickets throughout the 14 overs of their innings were regular. All seven bowlers were well used by Captain Charles Wentworth-Stanley, who also provided excellent support with some shrewd field positioning. Thomas Burke, Michael Hill, Wentworth-Stanley and Toby Wightman all finished with a brace of wickets.
With a long batting list, the Stowe run chase was aggressive and strong, and the loss of three wickets was a little unfortunate. The innings was anchored by a formidable 31* from Henry Wheeler, who hit five boundaries and one six over long-on; he was supported for the main part by Charles Clover, who hit three boundaries for his 14.
Man of the Match: Henry Wheeler
Polo (17 June)
Two great games yesterday against at Harrow at Wycombe. Stowe should feel confident of silverware at this weekend’s National schools tournament.
The C team (Charlie Hawkings-Byass, Alex Robertson, Issie Berner, Mungo Kilgour and Polly Anderson) played a very well structured game against a strong Harrow team. They created dozens of chances in the first two chukkas but could not convert any of them and Harrow went 2-0 up at half time. The luck changed in the third chukka and after we scored our first goal we barely missed any more opportunities. Stowe ended up winning 4-3 and could have won more convincingly if they had obviously made the most of their earlier opportunities.
The B team played a very strong (almost A team line up) Harrow team. Again, we created lots of opportunities but just seemed to lack the final touch to get the ball over the goal line. Penalties galore went wide and only added to a sense of frustration. Harrow, in contrast, probably created fewer chances but scored from the majority of the chances they created. Stowe ended up losing 5-2 but the team played a lot better in the second half of the match and I have every confidence they will pick up from here on Sunday in the top division.
All in all, a good day out. Great weather, some good Polo and it was once again lovely to see so many parents and supporters (and also a visit from the Headmaster).

Stowe 1st & 2nd Mixed v St Edward’s (H) Won 6 – 3 & 8 - 1
The Stowe 1st and 2nd mixed doubles teams scored a pair of impressive wins against St. Edwards.
The first team won 6-3 at home on Thursday. Dani Allard and Champ Panyarachun easily won their three matches as first pair, beating the St. Edwards 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pairs by scores of 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0 respectively. The second pair of Lydia Wood and Hamish Edwards struggled against the tough St. Edward's first pair, losing 507, but won a close match against the second pair, winning 7-6 in a tiebreak, and easily handled the third pair 6-2. Finally, third pair of Lucy Beaty and Tom Prideaux lost to the first and second pairs 4-6 and 4-6, but beat the thirds 6-3. It was a good performance and a really positive fixture for all.
The second team won handily, 8-1 against St. Edward's as well. First pair Pia Hermann and James Dale won their matches 6-4, 6-1, and 6-3 respectively. Lexy Beaty and Nic Du Bois Du Montule beat the St. Edward's first and third pairs 6-2 and 6-1 but lost to the seconds 4-6. Bryony Seekins and Francis Rowlands won their three matches 6-4, 6-4, and 6-2 respectively. It was an impressive display of fine tennis, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

1st XI v Carey Grammar School (H) Won by 24 runs (D/L method)
A young 1st XI which included debutants Patch Adams and Henry Woodward completed a 24 run victory over visiting tourists – Carey Grammar School from Melbourne Australia. It was Carey’s 5th visit to the school and it was a pleasure to welcome them back.
Winning the toss, new captain Alistair Birkby batted first to take first use of a used strip. Despite the early loss of Hood, James MacDonald and Ben Duckett played in relative comfort for a ninety run partnership. James unfortunately, fell two short of a well deserved half century. After 26 overs the heavens opened and play was halted for an hour and a half, with Ben Duckett 47 not out and the Stowe score on 130 for 2.
18 overs were lost in total to the rain and with the Duckworth/Lewis method being applied, Carey were set a revised target of 163. This was always going to be a stiff target and Will Berner bowled a fine opening spell to restrict their opening batsmen and was rewarded with one wicket. Good spells from Rudd, Birkby and Olley followed and although Carey got up to 138 the game was always in Stowe’s control.
It has always been a pleasure to host Carey’s boys and parents and this year was no different. We look forward to seeing them again in a couple of years.
Polo (19 June)
National Schools Polo Tournament
Two victories for Stowe this weekend. Our B team won division 1 with three very hard fought and impressive games. In the first game they comprehensively beat St Barts 4-0. In the second we narrowly edged out a strong Felsted side and in the final we beat Cheltenham College on penalties. John Blount captained the side which consisted of Octavia De Ferranti, Sophie Carew and star player on the day Hector Worsley.
The D team also won their division (2) with substantial wins against St Barts B (5-0) and Rugby Bs (5-1). Alex Robertson captained Mungo Kilgour, Polly Anderson and the unstoppable Angus Craven.
The C team played very well in the top division and recorded a fine win (2-0) against Rugby As in their first game. They then came up against a very strong Cheltenham side and although they held them off for a while, they eventually lost 3-0. In the final game they lost narrowly 1-0 to Felsted and finished 4th in the division. Oli Clarke captained Freddie Benyon, Issie Berner and Charlie Hawkings-Byass.
All in all, a great day for everyone. Many thanks to all the teams and to all the parents who came to watch. Let us hope for similar successes next week in the A team tournament.

1st XI v St Edward’s (A) Draw
Stowe 110 for 8
St Edward’s 158 all out (Sainsbury-Bow, 5 for 44)
In the end Stowe held on for a valiant draw on a pitch that had plenty in it for the bowlers. St Edward’s batted first and battled hard for their 158 runs all out in the face of some excellent bowling from the Stowe seam attack. Josh Sainsbury-Bow led the way with 5 for 44 from 16 overs but he was ably supported by John Gurney (3 for 33). Ben Paine and Will Berner also chipped in with a wicket each.
Stowe was confident of knocking off the total but lost Ben Sutton early to an excellent yorker in the 2nd over. Ali Birkby and James MacDonald then started to form a partnership riding their luck occasional as the ball spat off a length. The last ball before tea Birkby was unlucky to scratch one down the leg-side. A couple of overs after tea Ben Duckett fell the same way, strangled again down the leg-side. The nerves began to show and wickets then fell at regular intervals as none of the batsmen, except James MacDonald, came to terms with the bounce and movement. MacDonald was desperate for a partner and finally found one in Will Berner who batted sensibly, with great skill and courage for sixteen overs, to secure the draw. Will finished on 24 not out and James on 31 not out, carrying his bat through the innings in very testing conditions.
Yearlings B v St. Edward’s (H) Won by 145 runs
Stowe 186 for 5 (Tom Noest 57, Charlie Wentworth Stanley 48)
Teddies 41 all out (Harry Rees 3 wickets for 9 runs, Harry Matthews 2 wickets for 9 runs).
The Yearlings Bs make it 4 in a row with an emphatic 5 wicket victory over Teddies. The B team are really beginning to gel as a side, and their improvement since the first game is now beginning to tell with wins over Dr. Challoners, Bedford School, Cokethorpe and now Teddies all in just 2 weeks. This was a new best again for the YBs, with batting and bowling both at an outstanding level. Stowe won the toss and elected to bat, things looked grim early on when Fountaine, shaken by being hit by the ball, chipped his second delivery up and was caught early. But man of the day Tom Noest was in next, and steadied the ship. Captain Max Robinson was looking strong on a promising 14, but he was edged and caught behind and Charlie Wentworth Stanley came in to bat. The Wentworth Stanley-Noest partnership was the highlight of the match. They batted together for 20 overs, putting up a 105 run partnership, and it was not until the 27th over that the partnership was broken, outstanding from both players, Noest with 57 and W-Stanley with 48. The remaining overs saw our happy sloggers Wheeler and Wightman smash 30 between them from the remaining two overs to finish Stowe on an impressive total of 186/5.
Still the game was not over and Stowe took a ruthless approach in the field, looking to put Teddies to the sword as quickly as possible. Openers Matthews and Burke were tight and accurate, and in the first spell of bowling Matthews bowled two tremendous in swinging balls that cut in to take out off stump for 2 wickets, and during Burke's spell, a sensational direct hit from Charlie Wentworth Stanley ran out another batsman. Kinahan picked up the next one, and leading wicket taker Harry Rees took 3 more with another great bowling performance. With Teddies 39/9 after 17 overs the game was clearly won, but captain Max Robinson was taking no prisoners and brought the openers back to tear into the Teddies tail end, Matthews bowled another maiden but it was Piers Fountaine who mopped up, taking two wickets overall, one of them the now customary stumping from lively WK Henry Wheeler and the final of the game a dolly catch to Tom Noest for the victory. A great performance.
Men of the Match: Tom Noest and Charlie Wentworth Stanley
Yearlings C v St. Edward’s (A) Won by 5 wickets
St. Edward’s won the toss and elected to bat, making 98 all out from 26.4 overs.
Stowe chased and made 101-5 in 20.5 overs.
An overcast and chilly day out in central Oxford hardly made for good cricketing conditions. Although Stowe started brightly, punishing the St. Edward’s top order to leave them 10-3; the noose was not tightened by the visiting team, and the third wicket partnership took St. Edward’s to a more respectable 42-4. However, Stowe did eventually respond, with Joshua Macmillan’s three wickets, and both Chris Parsonson and Harry Pettifer netting two each; leaving a small total for the Stowe batters to chase. Although Stowe’s fielding was much improved from last week’s display, some time watching how the top players keep their minds and bodies active in the field might help to minimise more errors still, which were exacerbated in this match by the cold weather.
Stowe’s chase was always going to be comfortable, needing only 3.3 an over from the full 30. Runs were ticking over from the first over, and although there were more wickets lost than might be desirable, there was an element of fortune about the dismissals (including a poor umpiring decision from the Stowe coach). The sixth wicket partnership of Henry Cox and Tobin Mills saw Stowe to the necessary target (with a Mills boundary to finish the match) in what was a good innings in tough weather, with Hugo Ellison (18), James Montgomery (16) and Pettifer (15) all making reasonable starts.
So a final match against Oakham awaits next week, as the Yearlings C look to finish the year on a high with an eighth straight win; having only lost the first two of their matches in this season.
Tennis (19 June)
1st VI v Oundle (H) Lost 6 - 3
The fixture against the Oundle first team this Saturday was a lopsided affair. Stowe first pair Champ Panyarachun and Hamish Edwards dominated the Oundle teams, winning 6-3, 6-2, and 6-3 respectively. However the replacement second and third Stowe pairs had a bit of a struggle. Francis Rowlands and James Dale dropped their matches 1-6, 0-6, and 0-6, and George Low and Daniel Robinson posted scores of 1-6, 0-6, and 2-6. Special thanks to George Low for filling in on short notice. It should also be noted that Champ Panyarachun and Hamish Edwards never lost a single set in matches this year.
U15A Girls Tennis v Oundle (H) Won 8 – 1
Despite the apparent one sided score line this was actually a gripping match. A few days at home had not been advantageous to the form Charlie Lechmere, and she and Bella Wallersteiner (1st pair) found themselves down early against the Oundle 3rd pair. Fortunately, form gradually returned and they managed to retrieve the win 6-4. With Bella having things to do and places to go they then wrapped up wins against the 2nd and 1st pairs 6-1, 6-2 in quick time. Our 3rd pair, Laura Wellford and Nel Lewis, also started in poor form going down 2-6 against the Oundle 2nd pair with little fight. After this, however, they woke up and restored some pride with a 6-2 win over the 1st pair and a 6-0 win over the 3rd pair. It was our 2nd pair, Georgie Leech and Becca Dale, however, who provided the crowds with the most entertainment. Each of their matches was hard fought and close throughout, each went to a tiebreaker at 6 all and each was one by Stowe (tiebreak scores 8-6, 9-7, 7-5). When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This was truly a Stoic performance.
U15B Girls Tennis v Oundle (H) Lost 3 – 6
The B team had a fairly tough day at the office. I could not fault their endeavour but Oundle proved just a little faster on their feet and a little more consistent. Each of our pairs notched up wins against the Oundle 3rd pair but could not break through against the 1st and 2nd pairs. Honor Turner, showed the most spark on the court chasing down a few shots others would not have got to.
Girls 1st VI v Oundle (A) Lost 2 - 7
As our UVI and UV are away on study leave we took a nearly complete LVI team (all except Danni Allard, Lexy Beaty and Georgina Drummond) to play Oundle away. With their first team comprising of only UVI we ended up played like-for-like. Pia and Zara had an extremely competitive match in the first round beating the Oundle 2nd pair on a tie break 7-6. Tavy de Ferranti and Hetty Hill lost 3-6 to their third pair and Helena Carr-Smith, partnering Jose Brake took one game off their 1st pair. Pia and Zara then won 6-1 against their 3rd pair taking us 2-4 down going into the final round. However, Oundle proved too strong against own pairs and won the match 7-2.Pair of the match: Pia Herrmann and Zara Nichols.
Girls 2nd VI v Oundle (A) Lost 1 - 5
We had two pairs playing in this 2nd team match with both schools having the opportunity to give some girls their first game of the season. They played two sets against their own pair. Bryony Seekins and Eleanor Chadd beat the 2nd pair 6-4 in the first round but were beaten 3-6, 0-6 against their own pair. Rachel Wong and Alena Krytsyna the chance to play today and, although Rachel couldn't find her serve, they battled with the wind, managing to win 8 games during the afternoon.
Our U14A team finished their tennis season on a high although were left a little frustrated as the decision to play Oundle’s B Team only served to confirm our strength this year. Our top two pairs of Megan/Charlotte and Alice/Maddie made light work of the opposition and won all six sets fairly comfortably. Our top two pairs managed to overcome the problem by playing consistent tennis and winning a number of rallies at net. Our 3rd pair of Lydia/Lucy found the level of play caused them to make more mistakes, but should be congratulated for beating their 1st and 2nd pair 6-4 and 7-5 and only falling short in a tie break against their 3rd pair.
We won the match by 8 sets to 1 and have finished the season unbeaten. This is the first time a girls tennis team has managed this achievement since going co ed and amongst their competitors this season were St Edwards, Downe House, Uppingham, Rugby, Bloxham and Northampton High. Well done Girls!
Stowe U14 B v Oundle (H) Lost 5 - 4
This match was closely fought and again, as in many matches this season the result was determined in the last round, We started slowly with our 1st pair of Imo Wallersteiner and Katkin Farr being the only couple to produce a win. This meant we were 1-2 going in to the second round and so the girls rallied and produced better tennis all round to win 2 sets in the next round and set up an exciting finish. The games were all extremely close but it became apparent that the Oundle team were better about staying in the rallies for longer and we seemed tired compared to our opposition. Our 3rd pair of India Cornish and Izzy Taylor, normally so strong against their own pair this season fought back to make it 6-6 and going in to the tie break they looked more than competent of producing a win. However the tie break went away from them so fast that they were 0-6 down before they started to play. Unfortunately too big a deficit to make up and they lost easily. The pressure was on our other two pairs and unlike against Rugby last Sat we fell short. We lost to their 1st pair 5-7 and this left Lily Comyn and Bella Kelly playing for some pride. The match was tied at 5-5 and as everyone else had finished we decided to play one last game. Our two returned well and won the game and set to finish with their heads held high.
U14 A v Oundle (H) Won 7 - 2
With only 2 matches to go in the season, the U14A team continued their unbeaten season with a decisive victory over Oundle this afternoon. 1st pair Toby Cole and Fergus Edwards simply brushed the opposition aside, winning all 3 of their sets. Will de Boinville and Hugo Hiley won 2 of their 3 sets, deftly taking the fire out of the 2nd and 3rd Oundle pairs to leave their mark on the afternoon's proceedings. Stowe 3rd pair Archie Brodgen and Jamie Milne brought home the clear victory with a solid win over both the 2nd and 3rd Oundle pairs. Well done to all who played today.
U14 B v Oundle (H) Won 5 - 4
The U14B team should be congratulated for their first win of the season, against a competent Oundle side. Oliver Beazley and Jasper Upton played purposeful tennis, winning 2 out of their 3 sets. Tom Forde and Guy Riches proved to be a strong pairing, working well together both at the back and front of the court. Hoagy Pollen and Henry Coldstream confirmed the very narrow win with solid victories in two of their sets. Well done to all who played today.
