1st VI Mixed Doubles v Bloxham (away) Lost 3 - 6
It was a good experience to play mixed doubles this afternoon, adjusting to the different styles of play and having to think about ball placement to avoid the intercepting volley at the net, especially from the boys! In the first round the heavens opens and the fake tan streaked but play went on! Both Lucy Beaty, partnering Tom Prideaux, and Phoebe Avent playing with Miles Warden lost their first two rounds but Lydia and Hamish won their sets 7-6, 6-4 which gave us a chance going into the final round at 2-4 down. Lydia and Hamish finished their most successful afternoon beating their own pair 6-2. The match finished at 3-6.
Pair of the match: Lydia Wood and Hamish Edwards
2nd VI Mixed Doubles v Bloxham (A) Won 6 - 3
The 2nd VI had a great start against Bloxham with each pair winning 6-4 in the first round. Tavy de Ferranti and Will Siddeley who beat their first pair were able to sustain their initial strong form losing the next set as did Katie Robertson and Tom Benyon. However, Fleur and Marcus won their match which took us to 4-2 up going into the last round still with all to play for! Continuing their successful run, Fleur and Marcus won their set 6-3 against the Bloxham 1st pair to also win the match, with Katie and Tom also winning 6-3 to conclude the afternoon. Well done!
Pair of the match: Fleur Chevenix-Trench and Marcus Burns

Yearlings B v Dr Challenor’s Grammar School (H) won by 9 wickets
Dr. Challenors 59 all out (Harry Rees 3 wickets for 13 runs, Harry Matthews 2 wickets for 5 runs, Piers Fountaine 2 wickets for 0 runs, Mike Hill 2 wickets for 9 runs)
Stowe 63 for 1 (Piers Fountaine 37 not out)
In a game that could have been stopped by the weather at any time, Stowe produced an overall excellent performance to record their third win of the season. Stowe lost the toss and fielded first, openers Matthews and Selby started with their characteristically tight bowling, and although no wickets went down in their first spell the run rate was kept low and first change bowlers Harry Rees and Mike Hill continued the attack. It was Hill that made the first breakthrough, with a ball that snapped one of the bales as he bowled out Challoner’s best batsman. A run out saw the second wicket fall and then Stowe really started to tear into the middle order. Wicket keeper Henry Wheeler recovered after an early drop to take 2 excellent catches behind the stumps, catching in the field was also good after work in training this week, and Jack Vesty, Harry Rees and Ed Selby all took good catches in the field. Fountaine came in and bowled a storming 2 wicket maiden, and then Harry Matthews finished them off with his own 2 wicket maiden to end the innings 59 all out.
Stowe went into bat with a repeat performance from the Rugby school match the target. The openers again were very solid, and Max Robinson batted steadily and firmly while Piers Fountaine batted more aggressively to keep the scoreboard moving. At 45 for no loss it looked like the openers would do it alone, but a tricky left arm round the wicket bowler took Robinson's wicket and Tom Noest came in to replace him. Fountaine and Noest calmly hit the rest of the runs and Stowe won the game by 9 wickets. Good performance.
Man of the match: Piers Fountaine
Lord Taverner’s Quarter Finals
Junior Colts A XI v Wellington (A) Lost by 15 runs
Wellington 133 all out (James Hill 5 for 22)
Stowe 118 all out
On an over cast day and a green pitch Stowe won the toss and bowled first in the regional finals against Wellington. The ball moved a lot and initially Stowe struggled to control the swing and there were a lot of wides. However, James Hill got into a good rhythm and picked up the first wicket with 31 on the board. This gave him confidence and in his next over bowled three jaffa's on the trot to take a hatrick! Stowe's tails were up but the extras kept on coming, which just took some of the pressure off the Wellington batsmen. The Wellington number six also decided to counter attack and blitzed the ball to all parts for a quick fire 38. Meanwhile Captain Woodward had brought himself onto bowl and despite being quite expensive, did swing the ball prodigiously and picked up 4 wickets. Harry Martin also bowled a steady spell to return figures of 6 overs 1 for 12. James Hill returned to take the last wicket, well caught at square leg by Harry Dixon-Smith, and complete a well deserved five wicket haul. Special mention must go to Louis Forsyth who took the best catch I have seen at U15 level, diving full length having sprinted 20 yards.
In reply Stowe started steadily with openers White and Woodward adding fifty for the first wicket. However, it was never easy to bat and when both fell in the space of three overs Stowe were very quickly reduced to 70 for 5. George Jackman played well for 17 and gave Stowe a glimmer of hope but after hitting the off-spinner for a huge six, fell tamely, chipping the ball to point. Hill and Consett did their best for the last wicket but in the end the pressure told and Consett holed out to square leg.
Conditions suited the bowlers at all times today and ultimately it was going to be the side that put in the most disciplined performance with the ball that would win. Wellington conceded 20 extras with the ball, Stowe conceded 44 (extra being Wellingtons top scorer). Ultimately, this is where the game was decided, otherwise there was little between the two sides.
Polo (10 June)
Stowe fielded a C, D and E team against Rugby (showing the depth of Polo at Stowe currently).
The C team lost narrowly 11-9 to a very strong Rugby team but were extremely unlucky with a couple of very near misses in the last few seconds of the match. All the team played well but perhaps Issi Berner was the pick of the team (with Charlie Hawkings-Byass, Oliver Clarke and Alex Robertson also playing well)
The D team won fairly convincingly 8-5 with Nagus Craven being the surprise man of the match here (ably supported by Mungo Kilgour, Jaspar Upton and Polly Anderson)
The E team lost fairly comprehensively as one of the Rugby players could actually hit the ball whilst the horse was moving - an unfair advantage at this level!! The team did well to get three goals though as they lost 10-3. Tom Gordon-Colebrooke, Alex Long and Philippa Douglas all played their hearts out!
Cricket (12 June)
1st XI v Bedford (H) Draw
Bedford 240 for 8
Stowe 187 for 6 (J MacDonald - 51, A Birkby 54, B Duckett 50)
Stowe won the toss and elected to bowl on a wicket that started with some moisture in it. John Gurney and Josh Sainsbury-Bow started very well beating the bat several times in the first 6 overs. However, both lost a little patience having not taken a wicket and some loose deliveries crept in.
After the first hour the wicket had flattened and all the bowlers found it hard work. However, a fine delivery from Ben Paine got the first wicket and Stowe wrestled back some control. At lunch Bedford were in a good position on 122 for 2. It would have been easy for the team to have lost control at this point but after the break all the bowlers bowled well to restrict the Bedford scoring on what was now a very flat wicket. Ali Birkby was the pick of the bowlers returning figures of 3 for 58 from 18 overs. Bedford declaring at 240 for 8.
This left Stowe only 44 overs to knock off the target and an aggressive start was essential. However, some tight bowling initially restricted the scoring and Stowe had to settle for 36 for 1 at tea. This left 28 overs to knock off 205. A tall order and although a good partnership of over a hundred was achieved by Birkby and MacDonald the run rate climbed. Wickets fell as Stowe tried to up the run rate and despite a quick fire 50 from Ben Duckett Stowe fell well short of the target, but with the draw safely secured.
With a bit more luck in the first hour where Stowe could easily have picked up two or three wickets a chase of around 200 would have been likely and then it would have very much game on. In the end the lads had to settle for a draw but one from which many positives can be taken against a strong Bedford side.
Junior Colts B v Bedford (A) Won by 7 wickets
A resounding 7 wicket victory for the mighty JCBs at Bedford yesterday. Captain Phipps won the toss and Stowe proceeded to bowl accurately on a variable wicket to restrict the home side to 110 from 23 overs. Luke 'Pepsi Max' Pepera the pick of the bowlers with an impressive 4-9, a skiddy action and straight bowling helping the cause greatly.
After an early wobble with Fitzherbert lost in the first over and then 25-3 on the scoreboard after 6 overs, we were remembering that low totals are difficult to chase. However, an unbeaten and scintillating partnership of 86 for the 4th wicket between Drax (47*) and Kit 'the tennis player' Dixon-Smith (36*) eased us home comfortably within 17 overs.
Yearlings C v Bedford (H) Won by one wicket
Bedford won the toss and elected to bat, making 150-5 from the full 25 overs.
Stowe chased and made 151-9, from 23.3 overs.
As the sun began to shine in the late afternoon, so did the heavens beam down on a plucky Stowe team who manage to scrape the barrels of fortune to finish with their fifth straight win.
There really is nothing worthy of note in regards to Stowe’s bowling performance. Nine dropped catches encapsulates the dire and dismal performance in the field, in which the fielders were not aggressive or enthusiastic, and the bowlers neither consistent nor shrewd. Much work for training these coming weeks. Bedford took full advantage, posting what seemed to be a very imposing target on a wicket favouring the bowlers.
Without doubt, the target of 151 meant that a rate of six runs per over needed to be sustained over the entire innings – not an easy ask for a C team. Yet, Hugo Ellison (22) and Charlie Clover (15) got things off to a good start; not only ensuring that the chase began at a very good pace, but also, saw off the Bedford openers and forced the field back. There were a number of fair contributions from a middle order which (in the one disappointment of the batting innings) did not quite go on to post a good score. Archie Grossart found some form hitting a very elegant 18, before being sent back down the wicket and run out. Certainly, the game was always in the balance, as Stowe progressed from 48-2 to 79-4 and then more precariously to 95-6. There was however some excellent resistance at the end from Captain Henry Cox, who stemmed the fall of wickets with a dogged 12, and from number 11 Sebastian Johnson, who kept his wicket as necessary. The hero’s glory however fell to Chris Parsonson, newly promoted this week from 11 to 10 in the batting order, who steered a last wicket partnership of 26 runs towards victory. His 20 runs (four well-placed and well-hit boundaries) was an example of great composure; what Hemingway would have termed as ‘grace under pressure’. Stowe needed a run a ball in the last four overs, but under Parsonson’s stewardship, the target was whittled down to six from 12, which was easily dealt with in the final over with a Parsonson boundary, followed by a well-timed single, bringing waves of exhalation and relief from the 14-strong crowd still on the Bourbon.
A tremendously exciting match and definitely, one where Stowe’s ‘get-out-of-jail’ card was well-played.
Man of the Match: Chris Parsonson
Yearlings B XI v Bedford (A) Won by 29 runs
Stowe 61 all out (Wentworth Stanley 9)
Bedford 32 all out (Matthews 2 wickets for 2 runs off 4 overs)
Stowe followed up their midweek win with another outstanding fielding display to beat Bedford School. After losing the toss, Stowe batted first and never really got into any rhythm. Strong bowling from Bedford made it difficult to score, and the first wicket fell after 6 overs. Tom Noest and Charlie Wentworth Stanley both looked like they might go on to score big, but both fell to excellent bowling and the middle order collapsed. Wightman scored 8, Wheeler and Fountaine scored 7 each, but not much more was possible. The tail enders did their best, but Stowe couldn't stay in and limped to the finish 61 all out. Things looked very grim at this point, but the boys still showed great determination that they would go and bowl Bedford out. Then started the most electrifying fielding performance the Bourbon pitches have seen for decades. Harry Matthews opened, storming in with real purpose. The first bales were flying on the third ball, and Matthews bagged a wicket maiden. Hill followed with a wicket of his own, and after 2 overs Bedford were 3 for 2, and a chance was just starting to arise. Matthews smashed another set of bales in his following over, then bowled a maiden, Hill took another of his own for 3 runs with an outstanding diving catch from captain Robinson. Bedford 7 for 4 after 6 overs. At this point Stowe scented the blood, and really went for the kill. Harry Rees took his customary wicket next. Kinahan followed with an LBW, after 9 overs, Bedford were 19 for 6. Captain Max Robinson brought back Harry Matthews now, with leg spinner Piers Fountaine, step up wicket keeper Wheeler. Fountaine's bowling caught several batsmen in two minds, and lively keeper Henry Wheeler was in his element. A stumping and a run out later, Bedford were 30 for 8 and in big trouble. Wentworth Stanley came in to bowl what would be the last over, sending the bales flying twice, he wrapped up the match and an incredible performance to beat Bedford by 29 runs.
Man of the Match: Harry Matthews for his aggression and intensity in the 3 opening overs.
Yearlings A XI v Bedford (A) Won by 57 runs
Stowe 150 for 5 (Jackman 42, Hill 37 Bill Extra 41)
Bedford 93 All Out
A positive batting performance though at 93 for 2 from 15 a huge scored was on the cards. 150 was a good score but no more.
Stowe started off dreadfully in the field with an all run 4 from the first ball. The opening bowlers got their length wrong and were punished. It was 37 for 0 from 4 overs and things were looking bleak. However, a brilliant ball from Ullman removed the best Bedford batsman and a stunning direct hit from Cornett woke the Stowe side up. Cornett bowled 5 overs recording 1-15 before Jackman and Newman cleaned up the tail, Newman ending on 4-6. Freddie Ullman took 2-4 from 3 overs.
A shaky performance overall but the last 10 overs from Stowe were pure class.
Boys Tennis (12 June)
1st VI v Rugby (H) Lost 5 - 4
A modified team of senior boys (including three Colts) took on a fairly strong Rugby squad and failed to come away with the win. Stowe First pair of Champ Panyarachun and Hamish Edwards defeated the Rugby 2nd and 3rd doubles pairs 6-3, and 6-0 respectively, and dispatched the 1st pair 6-3, 6-4 as well. Unfortunately our second and third pairs did not fare as well. The second pair of Arthur Hobhouse and Roddy Blackburne lost to the Rugby 1st pair 2-6 and to the third pair 4-6, but elevated their game and pulled out a straight sets win against the second pair 7-5 and 6-4. Stowe third pair of Francis Rowlands and Titus Edwards lost to the Rugby first and second pair 1-6 and 3-6, and couldn't come away with a win against the third pair as well, dropping 4-6, 4-6. Some very close sets that didn't go our way spelled defeat for the team on Saturday. They look forward to bouncing back and getting a win against Oundle at home this Saturday.
U14 A v Rugby (H) Won 6 - 3
The U14 A team carried on with its unbeaten season after beating Rugby 6-3 today. Archie Brogden was new to the side after having been promoted from the B team. He and his partner Jamie Milne put on a sterling performance, winning 2 out of their 3 matches - a real achievement against such a formidable opponent school. Will de Boinville and Hugo Hiley won one, drew one and lost against the very strong first pair. Fergus Edwards and Toby Cole lost their first set of the season against Rugby's first pair, but held strong in their other sets to bring home the victory. Well done to all who played today.
U14B v Rugby (H) Lost 2 - 7
The U14 B team struggled against a much stronger Rugby side, producing only 2 wins out of the 9 encounters. Tom Forde and Henry Coldstream were the men of the match, putting in a very strong performance in what was a daunting encounter. Well done to all who played today.
Girls Tennis (12 June)
U14 VI’s v Bedford (A) Won 5 - 4
The U14’s played against Rugby today knowing that this was possibly their toughest fixture yet and with the A team still unbeaten we then found out that Rugby U14A team had also beaten everyone convincingly this season. In the A team each round was close although both Megan /Charlotte and Alice/Maddie played the key points of the rallies with a determination that put the Rugby pairs under a lot of pressure. Going in to the last round we were 4 – 2 up and felt confident of victory as we only needed one set to clinch the match. Our 3rd pair lost and then unbelievably so did Megan and Charlotte! This is the only set they have lost all year and somehow lost concentration to concede the last two games. Now it all hinged on Maddie and Alice who were at this stage 2-4 down! They played with a passion that showed how important this game and result was and started to get the upper hand. At 4-4 the 9th game seemed to go back and forward until eventually we took it and a lead of 5-4. Anyone who knows these two would also know that they were unlikely to give in and sure enough they took the final game and the match to win 5-4.
A tremendous effort and a well earned victory! Only Oundle left!
The U14 B team played well with each pair contributing in each round. There were times when concentration affected what should have been simple victories, but going in to the last round it was 3 sets a piece. Izzy Taylor and India Cornish destroyed their opponents easily 6 – 1 which put us 4-3 up but then Imo Wallersteiner and Ella Markham were also easily beaten and the score levelled again at 4-4 so it was all down to our 2nd pair – Lily Comyn and Bella Kelly. The set was close and the games were shared until a tie break at 6-6 became the only way to separate them. With better tennis played by our pair we came out winners by 7 points to 4 to win the tie break and the match 5-4.
A fantastic result against tough opposition! Well done girls!
Athletics (12 June)
The small group of athletes we took to the County Championships today enjoyed mixed fortunes. Some rose to the challenge, others were a little overawed but it was a great experience for them and gave them an idea of the standard outside the school setup.
We had 4 winners, although in some cases there were very few entries and therefore very little competition.
1st Louis Hitchcock - Junior Boys Long Jump
Alex Miarli - Inter Boys 100m Hurdles
Caspar Dickinson - Inter Boys 3000m
Priscilla Powell - Inter Girls Shot Putt
2nd Drew Todd - Junior Boys 400m (ran 55.4s which is a new PB for him and equals the school record set in 1962. This was the outstanding performance of the day by a Stoic.
