Match Reports

Boys Tennis (19 May)

U15B v Royal Latin Won 6 - 3
With first pair of Antonio Munoz Ballester & Ollie Findlay winning all their 3 sets after a shaky start Jack Barham and Kit Dixon Smith turned the match Stowe's way beating the Latin first pair 6-4. They made sure of the game with a 6-1 win over the 3rd pair and Sadiq Abbagana and Robbie Henriques added the extra set by also beating their 3rd pair.

U14B v Royal Latin Won 5-4

A tense affair went down to the last set with a rearranged first pair of Oliver Beazley and Jamie Milne just winning out 6-5 as no tie breaks were agreed before the game. With the Royal Latin first pair winning all their sets, ( our 3rd pair Kalil Ali and Henry Coldstream giving them the strongest test ) Stowe had to pick up sets elsewhere and Tom Ford and Guy Riches clinched a set leaving the match in the balance until Beazley and Milne just made it home. A big thank you to Archie Brogden who had to disappear after 2 sets to play in the Orchestra.

Polo (20 May)

We recorded two fine wins over Radley.

The A team played a strong and well drilled Radley team over four chukkas. We started half a goal down due to the difference in team handicaps, but started the match well - scoring an early goal in the first chukka. The second chukka was Radley’s, and they put pressure on the Stowe goal several times before being rewarded with a goal. The chukka finished five seconds early as Max Dodd-Noble had a slip on his horse and we were worried about possible damage to the horse's leg. Honours even in the third chukka meant that Radley we half a goal up going into the final chukka. This was a very tense 7 and a half minutes with both sides having great chances to score. However, a slightly controversial penalty was awarded to Stowe two minutes from time and Archie Voorspuy converted it to put Stowe back in front. Front the re-start Stowe scored a breakaway goal and the match was effectively over. Stowe won 4-2.5 with Archie scoring one and Hector Worsley getting the rest.

The C team also recorded a (4-1) win over Radley B team. Excellent team play from all four Stoics proved too strong for Radley in a very exciting three chukka match.
A great afternoon once again. Thank you to all the parents for their support!

Cricket (22 May)

Yearlings A XI v Rugby (A) Won by 5 wickets

Rugby won the toss and chose to bat on a beautiful pitch with large outfield. They steadied along until the 11th over when Ullman got the prize wicket of their best player LBW. From then on Stowe took control of the game and at tea had Rugby 68/6. Jackman, Newman and Ullman contributing effectively with the ball, backed up by some good fielding. Rugby was eventually dismissed for 127. Stowe's batting lacked a decent partnership as wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the run chase. Newman, Robinson, Dixon-Smith and Todd chipping in with a few runs to see out the run chase in the 31st over. Overall a convincing win by Stowe who continue to impress.

Yearlings B XI v Rugby (A) Lost by 49 runs

Rugby 205 for 7
Stowe 156 for 5 (Piers Fountaine 38)

Despite the loss this was the best performance of the year for Stowe. Unfortunately the difference was one Rugby batsman who got his eye in early and hit 101 runs and several 6s on a small pitch. The bowlers actually bowled very tightly with only 3 wide from 30 overs, a really good performance in the field, but hats off to the Rugby batsman who was just too good on the day. Stowe batted very well indeed, with the first 4 batsmen all scoring between 20 and 40 runs each, and the openers stayed in for a good 40 minutes before Fountaine was stumped for the first wicket. At last Stowe batted all 30 overs in mature and sensible fashion, a complete performance actually, but 205 proved out of reach, still 156 from 30 overs would have been easily enough to win all our other matches so far, so the improvement of the team is commendable, and this is what we should aim to produce every week from now on.
Man of the Match: Piers Fountaine

Yearlings C v Rugby (H) Won by 73 runs

Rugby won the toss and elected to bowl.
Stowe made 161-6 from 30 overs.
Rugby chased and were bowled out for 88 in 18.4 overs.

A fourth win on the trot for the Yearlings C, who played well with both bat and ball in very warm conditions on the Bourbon. Having been sent in by Rugby, Stowe’s innings built its spine along three key partnerships: Jonathan Dann (21) and Charles Clover (13) saw out the opening bowlers and kept the runs ticking over for the second wicket; Bertie Grossart (34) and Thomas Burke (25) provided the core of the runs with some delightful strokes in a 70-run stand for the fifth wicket; whilst Tobin Mills and Captain Henry Cox, both ending the innings not-out, did well to raise the run-rate in the final overs with some purposeful and aggressive play for the seventh wicket. There was a real sense of maturity about this well-paced innings, in which the Stowe batters were rarely flustered by a good Rugby attack, managing to accelerate play when needed and to build a good score.

Bowling has been the highlight over the past few matches. Today again, there was some terrific bowling on display, and some good work in the infield leading to two run-outs. Following up on their batting, Grossart and Burke again lead the bowlers, both netting three wickets. Burke opened and probed with ferocious swing, whilst Grossart finished any resistance from the Rugby middle order with his deceptive leg-spin.

So all in all, a good match again played with much amiability from Rugby. However, there were a few lapses in the field (two close chances to catch, one dropped catch, and one missed run-out), and in a tighter match, these near-misses might have mattered. Small details matter in cricket, and this team played exceptionally well today, but will need to continue to work on these small details if they are to continue to improve and to impress.
Man of the Match: Bertie Grossart

Junior Colts B v Rugby (A) Won by 6 wickets

Rugby 82 all out Phipps 15 - 3, Hawke 5-3, Drax 16 - 2 and Roberts 24-2
Stowe 85 for 4, Drax 23

Stowe put together a great all round performance to pick up a good victory. After losing the toss and being put into field Phipps and Drax ripped through their top order leaving them 18 for 5 with some quick and direct bowling. A couple of wickets for Roberts put Stowe in a dominant position however, their number 6 provided some good resistance and hit a few big shots and threatened to put the score past 100. To stop this the ball was thrown to Will Hawke who with his grip and spin picked up a Hatrick, taking their No. 6 with a catch from G. Jones and then clean bowling their 10 and 11. Stowe had been excellent in the field and now had to chase a total of 82.

A solid start by Fitzherbert and Cockbill put Stowe on their way. However with the pitch being quite slow the batsman found it hard to judge some shots and Fitzherbert and Cockbill both fell for 11. A nice 23 from Drax swung the game towards a Stowe victory until he was out mistiming a drive. However Robertson and Jones steadied the ship and took the game away batting with great maturity. A great bit of fielding with a direct hit saw the end of Jones but Robertson and Roberts took the team past the finish line with wickets in hand.

Today was a great victory with the team showing real maturity with the bat and ball. The team have really stepped up well and improved this term and gained confidence with every result. Bring on next half term!

Girls Tennis (22 May)

1st VI v St Edward's (H) Won 8 - 1

On a beautiful afternoon at Stowe the Girls 1st VI were confident on court against St Edward's taking an early lead in the first round with Danni Allard and Pia Herrmann beating their 1st pair 6-0 and Iszy and Lucy winning 6-3 against their 3rd pair. In the second round these two pairs continued this form to go 4-1 up overall but against the first pair Lydia and Phoebe were 0-3 down. Impressively Lydia and Phoebe then bounced back (literally Phoebe!) to level at 3-3 only to go back to 5-6 thinking the match was over. However, they changed ends and went on to take the next game then won the tie break 7-4. It was a competitive game, showing great spirit and was the winning set of the day! In the final round all three pairs won, dropping only 5 games between them. A fantastic way to end this half of term - well done!
Pair of the match: Lydia Wood, Phoebe Avent

2nd VI v St Edward's Oxford (H) Won 5 - 4

The 2nd team made a great start to this match with Lexy Beaty and Zara Nichols beating their 3rd pair 6-3 and Katie Robertson, paired with Charlotte Cook, winning 6-3 against their 3rd's. In the next round we won two more sets with Tavy and Hetty beating the 3rd pair 6-3 and Lexy and Zara comfortably winning 6-2 against the opposition's 2nd pair. We felt confident going into the last round already 4-1 up only needing to win one of the three remaining matches! However, their 1st pair remained unbeaten all afternoon with Lexy and Zara losing 4-6. Katie and Charlotte then came off court having lost 0-6 against their own pair so suddenly the pressure was on! It was very exciting to then follow Hetty and Tavy's game which was 5-5, having already been 4-2 up! The girls stayed focused and calm keeping the ball in play and making some excellent winning volleys to finish their set 7-5 to win the overall match 5-4! A creditable team performance - well done girls!
Pair of the match: Hetty Hill and Tavy de Ferranti

3rd VI v St. Edward’s (H) Lost 2 – 7

The Girls 3rd VI tennis had an afternoon full of deuce points and tie breaks (5 in total), unfortunately succumbing to St. Edward's equal competition 2-7 on Saturday. While pairs Georgina Drummond and Sarah Warner and Georgie Duthie and Fleur Chevenix-Trench contributed to the 2 wins, it was partner pair Heli Carr-Smith and Bryony Seekins who are awarded pair of the match. Heli particularly contributed to day with her volleys, cutting the drive off at the net and scoring points with her well placed shots. Bryony, also, was decisive in her communication and serves. Although they didn't come out on top, they were the last pair off the court after a day of well played competition.

4th VI v St Edward’s (H) Won 5 - 1

The Senior Girls’ 4th team played very well today given the excellent but very hot conditions. The opposition were only able to field 2 complete pairs due to illness. Stowe’s 1st pair, Looch Trevor and Annabel Duthie, won both their sets convincingly 6-3 and 6-0. They both served and volleyed well, using many of the attack strategies practised during coaching sessions. The 2nd pair Emily Beatty and Pandora Stuart-Mills started slowly finding the heat initially too much for them along with a foot injury for Pandora. However, having lost their first set to the opposition’s 1st pair, they spun back and won against their own pair 6-0. Stowe’s 3rd pair, Ellie Chad and Rebecca Downe, was strong throughout the afternoon and their sets were full of some solid rallies. They won both their sets 6-2.
Well done girls and congratulations for playing with great team spirit.

U15A Girls Tennis v St Edward's (A) Won 6 - 3
U15B Girls Tennis v St Edward's (A) Won 8 - 1
U15C Girls Tennis v St Edward's (A) Won 9 - 0

While their Australian coach soaked up the beautiful English sunshine the girls did the job on the court. The impressive C Team notched up their 9 sets losing only 4 games. The B Team also showed its depth with our nominated 3rd pair, Merrell and Hut, performing best on the day. The A Team battle was significantly less one-sided. Lewis and Welford found the going tough and came out on the wrong side of two long sets against the 1st and 3rd pairs. Leech and Dale also found their 1st pair too strong but bounced back with a good win against the 2nd pair. With Lechmere and Wallersteiner playing to form and scoring comfortable wins against the 2nd and 3rd pairs we went into the final round at 3 sets each. The girls had now hit their straps however and all pairs won comfortably against their opposite numbers.

U14 A & B v St. Edward’s (A)

U14 A had a much tougher contest today and for the first time this term the result was actually decided on the last game of the match. They were 2-1 up at the end of the first round, but then lost two sets to make it very close going in to the last round. Megan and Charlotte produced a mature win (6-1) against the 1st pair who had won everything up until that point. Megan and Charlotte were impressive and gave an excellent display of doubles play with most points being won at the net. They lost 2 games all day!. Lucy and Ella had a tough day and despite putting up a good fight, failed to secure a set against any pair. This left it all down to Alice and Maddie who were not playing as well as they might. They attacked and continued to play exciting tennis but too many unforced errors meant that they allowed their opposition to gain confidence. However, their competitive edge came through and they came out worthy winners by 6-3 and therefore giving us victory by 5 sets to 4. Well done girls – you are going in to half term unbeaten!

U14B v St Edward’s (A)

Our U14B team had a convincing victory by 7 sets to 2. A new pairing of Imo Wallersteiner and Katkin Farr won all three sets, but the other pairs chipped in with important wins. We were just too strong throughout and generally played the better tennis!

Boys Tennis (22 May)

U15 A v St Edward’s Won 5 - 4

A tense match which went into the final round 3 all. With 1st pair, O'Brien and Warner losing 6-4, it was down to debutants Edwards and Cole and 2nd pair Hayward and Findlay to win the last two sets. Neither pair failed to deliver winning their sets 6-4 each giving Edwards and Cole straight sets wins against each St Edwards pair.

U15 B's Won 5 - 4

Going into the last round Stowe was comfortably in front 4-2 and just needed one of the last 3 sets to claim the win. First Whitehead and Merrell went down 6-4 and then debutants Hiley and De Boinville lost 6-4 so it was left to Lonsdale and Henriques who had lost their previous two sets to save the day, winning 6-2 to make a clean sweep at this age group.

1st VI v St Edward’s (H) Lost 4 – 5

The Boys 1st VI Tennis team lost a close match to a very competitive St. Edwards squad 5-4. Stowe’s first pair Champ Panyarachun and Hamish Edwards won their three matches 7-6, 6-0, and 6-1. Second pair of David Carter and Nic Du Bois Du Montule added the fourth win against St. Edwards’s third pair 7-6, but lost to the 1st’s 4-6, and the 2nds 6-7. Stowe third pair, Youvir Assomull and Marcus Burns, lost three close matches 3-6, 4-6, and 5-7. A disappointing result for the boys, but we saw some good tennis on display.
