Girls Tennis (12 May)

Girls 1st VI v Northampton High School (H) Won 7 - 2

In a late afternoon match the senior girls made an extremely promising start with Danni Allard and Pia Herrmann dominating their first pair to win 6--3. Lucy Beaty and Iszy Cameron had a comfortable win over their 3rd pair, 6-1, and Louisa and Zara, partnering together for the first time after Zara stepped in at the last minute, soon connected to beat their 2nd pair 6-3. In the next round they all played their own pair and Danni/Pia and Louisa/Zara didn't conceded a single game to win the match overall at this early stage. Iszy and Lucy were more challenged by their 1st pair and were unable to pick themselves up to prevent the unforced errors finishing up at 2-6. However, they bounced back in the final round to beat their 2nd pair 6-2 and Danni/Pia won their third set of the day 6-1. Louisa and Zara gave their first pair a good game with some fantastic winners from Louisa and great consistency from Zara, narrowly losing 4-6. It all bodes well for the Saturday fixture away against Downe House!

Girls U14A v Northampton High School (H) Won 8 - 1

The U14 girls tennis carried on their winning ways with a decisive victory against Northampton High School. The first round started unusually with sets against their own pair and despite Northampton having a very strong player in their first pair, Megan and Charlotte were too experienced to allow their unbeaten run to be affected. A number of the games went to deuce, but the final score of 6 – 1 was impressive. The other two pairs, Alice/Maddie and Lucy and Ella also started well and won 6-1 and 6-0 respectively. In the second round, congratulations should go to Alice and Maddie for some effective net play as they managed to also beat the first pair 6-2. Our 3rd pair found the going a little tough against that same pair but produced emphatic wins against the other two and produced two 6-0 victories. The final score was a resounding 8 sets to 1 victory which will prepare them for the matches against Downe House this Saturday.

Boys Tennis (13 May)

Yearlings A v Akeley Wood (A) Won 9 - 0

All pairs played very well, dominating their opposition throughout. Toby Cole and Fergus Edwards dropped only 2 games in the whole match, serving very well and taking the game to the opposition. Hugo Hiley and Will de Boinville held their games well, demonstrating good tactical awareness. Oliver Beazley and Jamie Milne also played very strongly at 3rd pair. Well done to all who played.

Junior Colts A v Akeley Wood (A) Won 9-0

Orlando Whitehead and Angus Merrel had to preserve Stowe's superiority by winning a tie break 7-4 to win all 9 sets against Akeley Wood. A special mention should be made for Arthur Lonsdale who made his debut for the A's.

Boys 1st VI Tennis v Akeley Wood (A) Won 9 - 0

A modified 1st VI defeated Akeley Wood handily without dropping a set. First pair of Nic Du Bois Du Montule and Marcus Burns won their matches against the Akeley 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pairs by the scores of 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 respectively. The second pair of Francis Rowlands and James Dale won their matches 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 respectively. Finally, the pair of the day was Roddy Blackburne and Arthur Hobhouse who did not drop a single game, winning 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. A most impressive outing which should inspire confidence for our match away at Bloxham on May 15th.

Cricket (13 May)

2nd XI v Bedford Modern (H) Won by 6 wickets

Bedford Modern 93 for 8 (Prideaux 3 for 11, Kealey 2 for 7)

Stowe 94 for 4 (Johnson 32, Roe 19 no)

Having lost the toss and been asked to field, Stowe made the perfect start with a wicket from the first ball of the match. A leg-side full toss caught at midwicket! Tom Prideaux then bowled another excellent spell to collect two more good wickets. Miles Johnson skippered the side well, making good use of his bowlers with the exception of not giving the consistent Teddy Kealey his full complement of overs after he had bowled 3 overs 2 for 7! For the vast majority of the Bedford innings Stowe’s bowling and fielding were accurate and sharp. However, there were some sloppy moments that gifted Bedford a couple of overthrows and 17 extras. Our batting display was too relaxed due to the low total to chase, but Miles Johnson and Ben Roe decided against any misguided swipes and steered us home with some room to spare.

Colts A v Cokethorpe (A) Won by 9 wickets

Cokethorpe 93-6 (20 overs)
Wightman 3-8
Barran 1-5

Stowe 95-1 (15.4 overs)
Pettifer 43*
Dixon-Smith 36*

In the end Dixon-Smith and Pettifer made it fairly easy…… but that did not excuse a woeful fielding display in the second half of the Cokethorpe innings. With the score at 22-5 from 10 overs, they were struggling and the Stowe coaches were looking for the minibus keys for a very early return journey. With the focus in the field slipping by the ball, no one noticed that no.8 Daniels was starting to take advantage of some bad bowling, uninspired field placing and dreadful fielding (4 missed run outs and two dropped catches). As the coach struggled to contain his frustration the dressing room was uncharacteristically quiet at half time with the prospect of chasing 40 runs more than we should have been.
Thankfully Guy ‘the linchpin’ Dixon-Smith and Ed ‘have some catching practice’ Pettifer batted very well and through a positive approach and some fine stroke play sealed the deal in comfortable fashion. Less than happy days, but a win nevertheless.
Man of the match: Wightman

Yearlings A v Bedford Modern School (H) Won by 8 wickets

Bedford Modern 95-7 from 20 (Ulmann 2-17)
Stowe 96-2 from 18.2 (Newman 29, Jackman 24)

After the poor performance against the Oratory, I was important for the YA team to bounce back and this they did with a slick display against a good Bedford Modern side. The bowling was tight from the start and despite still being unable to run anyone out, the runs was kept to a minimum. Fred Ulmann, in his first game for the side, was the pick of the bowlers. 95 was never going to be an easy score on an outfield which was slowing down, but intelligent running between the wickets by Jackman and Newman saw a 50 partnership on the board at the half way stage and Robinson and Dixon-Smith finished the job was 10 balls to spare.

Yearlings D XI v Kingham Hill (A) won by 74 runs

Stowe 134 for 7 (Timon White, 31)
(Hannington Morgan, 17)
(Pan Ratanamangcla, 18)

Kingham Hill 60 (Jones, 2-6 in 1.2)
(Morgan, 2-6 in 2)
(Pettifer, 2-18 in 4)
(Pan Ratanamangcla, 3-1 in 4, 2 maidens and 1 triple wicket maiden)

Kingham Hill won the toss and elected to field first. Kingham's bowling attack was very strong in the first few overs and managed to topple over Louis Palmer early in the game. Tobin Mills and Han Morgan resisted the attack and formed a solid partnership until Mills was bowled by their leading wicket taker. Kemal Eyi proved useless against Kingham and was caught for a duck. Then Timon White came in and played his shots well, first got his eye in and then had a bit of a smack around until he was dismissed unfortunately for 31. Timon and Pan formed a very strong partnership of 44 until Timon was dismissed. Pan saw the innings to its end and Stowe was left on 134 for 7. Kingham's opener put up a valiant effort against the Stowe bowling attack with 14 runs to his name as he saw one after the other of his team-mates fall to the strong Stowe attack. Coomes, their leading wicket taker, proved to be a problem as he resisted the attack and put a few runs on the board. He was becoming a danger to the scoreline until he ran himself out to a sharp bit of fielding from the man of the match Pan Ratanamangcla and Edzai Soper-Gwatidzo (keeper). A very good second win from the Yearling's D team.

Yearlings C v Kingham Hill (H) Won by 2 wickets

Kingham Hill batted first and made 77 all out from 19.1 overs.
Stowe chased and made 79-8, also from 19.1 overs.

This was a most exciting match, played in excellent spirit under fine springtime conditions on the Bourbon fields. Stowe won the toss and sent Kingham Hill into bat. For the second match in a row, the Stowe bowling attack was purposeful and effective. Kingham Hill’s innings were characterised by the regular fall of wickets. Five seamers shared the bulk of the bowling today: Sebastian Johnson (two wickets) and Tom Burke (two wickets) found steady in swing, whilst Chris Parsonson (no wickets in return for fine bowling today, but two excellent catches) and Michael Hill (three wickets) encountered much success with straight and sharp bowling, cleverly varying their pace and bounce. Hugo Ellison (two wickets) and Bertie Grossart (one wicket from his only delivery) chipped in with their respective medium pace and leg-spin. Still, bowlers alone do not make a good innings, and much of Stowe’s best work was carried out in the field, where the whole team was eager to attack the ball, and sharp with their collection and return throws.

The Stowe chase started with much optimism, as 78 seemed a very ‘get-table’ target on a very good batting wicket. However, despite a good run-rate, Stowe also lost regular wickets through some poor decisions, and nervous batting. What looked like a comfortable 40-3 after 10 overs (with Ellison the mainstay with 18 runs) soon developed into 63-7 with four overs to play. 15 from four overs. 15 from 24 balls – probable, but not certain; particularly with an aggressive Kingham Hill field denying singles and looking for more wickets. Wicketkeeper Jonathan Dann kept a cool head whilst those around him fell (yet, the tail-end of Hill and Johnson did provide some valuable support), hitting two fours in the third last over to relieve the pressure, and then the winning boundary in the first ball of the last over, with Stowe needing three runs to win.
So another well paced innings from Stowe, which is something to commend, but unfortunately, with more wickets lost than desired. So much positive, but more work needed if this team is to keep stretching its run of wins.
Man of the Match: Jonathan Dann (for seeing the chase through safely).

Sailing (13 May)

Stowe v Bloxham (H)

Bloxham won 2 - 1

In a tightly fought series of races Bloxham just squeezed ahead of Stowe by a single point in the third and final race; Euan Welsh, the Stowe captain, came first in two of the three races.

Polo

Stowe v Eton

In the second instalment (Bs and Cs) at Kirtlington yesterday, Stowe beat Eton at the C team level 2-1. Alex Robertson, Oli Clarke, Charlie Hawkings-Byass and Polly Anderson played a hard fort game and came out on top thanks to a Charlie Hawkings-Byass penalty in the last couple of minutes. They were two well matched teams and both played very well but in the end it was a fair result for Stowe.

B team was slightly more disappointing though. Stowe lost 10-5 to a very strong Eton team. A lack of marking and a loss of confidence in front of goal were the main weaknesses in the match. John Blount played very well though scoring two goals - one was a superb run from in his own half scoring at a gallop.

All in all, a very good afternoon and it was lovely to see so many parents from both schools there to support the pupils. The next matches are against Uppingham on 16 May and Radley on 20 May (both are at Kirtlington).

Lord Taverner’s 3rd Round, U15 Cricket

Stowe has progressed to the 3rd round of the Lord Taverner’s competition having beaten MCS Oxford in the last round. This is the furthest we have progressed in this competition and we now take on Harrow in the next round.

Cricket (15 May)

1st XI v Oundle (A) Won by 90 runs
Oundle 102 all out (W. Berner 5 for 25, J Sainsbury-Bow 4 for 27)
Stowe 190 all out (B. Duckett 55, A. Birkby 69)

2nd XI v Oundle (A) Lost by 10 wickets
Stowe 150 all out
Oundle 151

We lost the toss and were inserted onto a green and spongy track. Our opening pair of Trotter and Hood was steady and saw off the opening pair of Oundle bowlers. Their first change bowler was a slow left armer and this change of angle accounted for our two openers missing straight ones and being bowled. Skipper Johnson arrived at the crease and offered measured strikes with responsible leaves. Miles was not without fortune and having picked out fielders on the boundary he finally succumbed at the 4th attempt, top scoring with 29. Cullimore played exceptionally well at number 5 and really steadied the ship, having seen Speakman perish to a lucky take at slip! I certainly see Cullimore really growing into a 2nd XI player, and with a bit more confidence to push for singles then he will tick the score board over nicely. Wood and Rust departed for Ducks, and the rest of the lower order didn’t really have time to get in before they got out. A very cheeky 22 from Gus Hopewell and a couple of lusty blows from our number 11 Ejindu got the score up to a below par 150.

The team really gelled and made Oundle fight for 30 overs to get the runs. Sadly no wickets for any of the bowlers. But Kealey looked good when not pulling it down short and should have had at least two wickets but for poor fielding. The opening spell of Speakman’s 5 overs for 14 runs, and Prideaux’s 5 overs for 16 runs were a particular delight. The tone was good in the field and I was proud of the way the boys went about their work.

Sadly just too few runs scored. Maybe the coach was wrong putting in Ejindu in at 11, definite promotion needed for the next game, but the top and middle order really need to get the runs on the board!

35 over match. Stowe 150 for 9, Oundle 154 for 0, Oundle win by 10 wickets

3rd XI v Oundle (A) Lost by 120 runs
Stowe 186 all out (G Corner 56)
Oundle 306 all out

Lost heavily chasing a superb 309 set by OUndle off 35 overs. The boys gave it a good go and we were not far off the pace in etrms of run rate but ran out of wickets in the 28th over having scored 186.

Colts A XI v Oundle (A) Lost by 125 runs
Stowe 75 all out
Oundle 200 for 9

Colts B XI v Oundle (A) Lost
Stowe
Oundle

Junior Colts A XI v Oundle (H) Lost by 1 wicket
Oundle 60 for 9 (O Page 5 for )
Stowe 59 all out

Junior Colts B XI v Oundle (H) Won by 2 wickets
Stowe 151 for 8
Oundle 147 all out

Captain Harry Cockbill won the toss and put Oundle into bat on a very green wicket. This decision was justified by very tight opening bowling; James Drax knocked 3 down in one over, but narrowly missed out on a hat-trick, and Henry Palling supported him at the other end by giving nothing away. Before too long Stowe had Oundle on the back burner at 62-6. However their tail wagged hard and we went in for tea with 147 to chase down. Stowe's innings had a shocking start with a run out making us 2-1....however, Palling came in and steadied the ship with what was to be a crucial knock. Palling timed his innings to perfection and showed great maturity to bat through the innings and end up with 49no. He was supported well by Oscar Robertson (20) and Roberts (21) as Stowe reached 151 in the 25th over. A fantastic match. OKT. Joint Man of the Match: Palling and Drax.

Junior Colts C XI v Oundle (H) Lost by 7 wickets
Oundle 81 for 3
Stowe 77

A very disappointing game from the Junior Coltd C. Oundle won the toss and elected to field first giving Stowe the bat. Dixon-Smith looked to be off to a stormer but was bowled after only scoring 8. After the fall of Dixon-Smith, the team felt the need to come in and slog everything that was thrown at them. This did not work as we lost 4 wickets in 4 overs and looked doomed for the rest of the game. Mungo Akerman came in at number 8 and was the only player who batted with his head. He took his time at the crease and played some sensible shots until he was stumped by the Oundle keeper. Even with the help of a 12th batsmen (agreed to by both umpires) Stowe were restricted to 77 runs off only 13 overs. From the first ball of the 2nd innings, all Oundle needed to do was to take their time and that is exactly what they did. With the aid of some poor keeping by the JCC keeper and a few drops catches from the other fielders and generally sloppy fielding, Oundle cruised to victory to win by 8 wickets (with the 12th man). Looks like its back to the nets for some serious work on batting.

Yearlings A XI v Oundle (H) Won by 5 wickets
Stowe 87 for 5
Oundle 86 all out (A Newman 4 for 4)

Another very mature performance from the YA. Tight bowling and some impressive captaincy from Jackman saw the Oundle openers struggle to get any runs in the first 13 overs and the pressure told as the YA finally managed to run someone out! Having finally done it, Olly Consatantine promptly scored a direct hit to leave Oundle struggling at 35 for 3. Cornett and Newman bowled brilliantly and were the reason that Stowe were able to chase such a small total. Stowe started the chase well but some poor shot selection saw 4 members of the top 6 batsmen give their wickets away. However, Jackman, Dixon-Smith and, at the end, Drew Todd all scored freely to take Stowe to a five wicket win.
Competition for places and a great team spirit make this a very exciting team.
Men of the Match: George Corner (a very useful 56), Will Cowley (35 runs and 2 wickets)

Yearlings B XI v Oundle (H) Lost by 2 wickets
Stowe 98 all out
Oundle 99 for 8

Yearlings C XI v Oundle (H) Won by 8 wickets
Stowe 66 for 2
Oundle 62 all out (Burke 5 for 22)

Boys Tennis (15 May)

Boys 1st VI v Bloxham (A) Won 8 - 1

With a dominant performance, the Senior Boys 1st VI swept Bloxham aside dropping only one set. First pair of Champ Panyarachun and Nic Du Bois Du Montule won their matches against the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bloxham pairs 6-4, 6-2, and 6-2 respectively. Second pair of Hamish Edwards and Francis Rowlands cruised through, beating the first pair 6-3, the second pair 7-5, and the third pair 6-0. The Stowe third doubles pair of Youvir Assomull and Marcus Burns brought home a few lopsided scores. While defeating the 1st and 3rd Bloxham pairs handily, 6-2 and 6-1 respectively, they were defeated by a tenacious Bloxham 2nd pair 0-6. Overall, a great day for the boys, as they look forward to continuing their streak against St. Edward's this Saturday.

Man of the Match: Hamish Edwards

Boys 2nd VI v Bloxham (A) Won 9 - 0

The 2nd VI had a similarly strong showing against Bloxham, and did not drop a single set. Stowe first pair Miles Warden and Tom Benyon beat the Bloxham 1sts, 2nds, and 3rds with scores of 6-1, 6-3, and 6-1. Second pair Harry Lester and James Dale won with similarly commanding scores of 6-2, 6-2, and 6-1 respectively. Finally, the third doubles team of Daniel Robinson and See-Ho Leung showcased mental tenacity in eking out a bunch of close wins, 7-6, 7-6, and 7-5 respectively. Man of the Match: Tom Benyon.

Girls Tennis (15 May)

U14A v Downe House

Our U14A team added another decisive victory to their results today with an impressive win over a talented Downe House side. The opposition had a very strong 1st pair who lost only 2 games to our 2nd and 3rd pair. Megan and Charlotte have not dropped a set yet this term and were struggling at 1 – 4 down. However their strength and experience as a pair became obvious as they dominated the rallies and played clever tennis to pull back to 4 – 4. The set went in to a tie break and again they held their nerve alongside Megan hitting some blistering passing shots in to the tramlines and Charlotte winning a crucial drop shot – they never really looked like losing and the crowd were treated to an excellent display of doubles with our two finally winning 7-5. Alice and Maddie also won a tight tiebreak to beat their own pair in the last round and Lucy and Ella pulled off a wonderful victory against the 2nd pair.

U14B v Downe House

Our U14 b team had some very close matches but in most of them could not prevent Downe House from coming away with a victory on the day. Four of the sets were lost 4-6 and it came down to a lack of consistency in rallies and not winning service games. Bella/Katkin and India/Izzy both played well to beat their 3rd pair, but the final score was 7-2 in favour of Downe House.

Our combined U14/15C team were excellent and won the match by 6 sets to 3. Ellie Pinnock and Gigi Bacon led the way as first pair by winning all three sets including a tie break after a very close match against the 2nd pair. The two Olivia’s (Savage and Hunter) carried on their winning ways by beating the first pair 7-5 and the 3rd pair 6-2. Our 3rd pair of Ella May and Martha did everything right to beat the first pair in a tie break and then lost to the other two!

However, a fantastic afternoon – well done U14’s!

U15A v Downe House (A) Lost 5 - 4

The girls played some good tennis to put themselves in a winning position but struggled to finish off games. Best on the day were Helena Lewis and Laura Welford.

U15B Girls Tennis vs Downe House lost 5-4

After a shaky start the girls fought back to push the match to the last set. The best performing pair was Harriet Comyn and Eeonore Du Bois de Montule.

National Twenty/20

Stowe hosted the regional part of the National Twenty/20 on Saturday. Stowe played Wellingborough first, winning the toss and batting first on an excellent strip. Openers Alaistair Birkby and Jake Olley put on 60 within the first six overs. Olley finished up with 42 and Birkby 59 with Ben Duckett scoring a quick fire 33. Final total 173.

This was always going to be a tough ask, however, Wellingborough kept up with the rate for most of their reply, but kept losing wickets. In the end they fell 27 short with Sainsbury-Bow being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 35.

In the final Stowe took on Oundle, confident having beaten them heavily the day before. However, their openers came out very positively and the stowe attack struggled to find an answer, despite a mostly disciplined bowling and fielding performance.

At the half way mark Stowe still felt they could chase down 167 but early wickets put us on the back foot and they found runs hard to come by. With the run rate climbing Stowe needed something special and despite a beligerant 27 from Ben Curlay the team fell well short.

Polo (16 May)

On Sunday the As and Bs played Uppingham at Kirtlington Polo Club.

The A teams were well matched on paper with both teams level on handicap (so we started at 0-0). Stowe quickly established a firm grip on the match and scored four goals in the first chukka without reply. This was Uppingham's first game of the season and they obviously needed the break between chukkas to organise themselves. The next three chukkas saw some improvement in organisation from the opponents but they were never able to threaten our goal. The weather made stopping tricky and there were a couple of nasty slips in the third chukka which could have unsettled our rhythm. However, we came away 10-0 winners with Hector Worsley scoring three, as did Max Dodd-Noble and Archie Voorspuy scoredthe rest. Harry Raikes assisted several of the goals - and several opportunities that should have been goals!

The B team was going to be more of an even contest though as our four had not played together either. We started slowly but were able to get into a slight lead in the first chukka. We gradually then turned on the pressure and made the most of our opportunities. Sophie Carew played very well indeed in defence and Uppingham barely had a look in at our goal. Stowe ended up winning this game 10-0 as well with excellent play from all of the players (Polly Anderson, Sophie Carew, Mungo Kilgour, Oli Clarke - but especially from Sophie).

With games in the next ten days against Radley and Wellington, things are looking up at the moment!

Yearlings C v Oundle (H) Stowe won by 8 wickets.

Oundle batted first and made 62 all out, from 17.1 overs. (Burke 5 for 22)
Stowe chased and made 64-2, from 9.5 overs. (Ellison 35*)

A friendly Oundle side won the toss (well, an edamame bean concealed in the hand) and chose to bat on a wicket which looked very true and with a partly cloudy sky overhead. The Stowe field was well set, and the bowlers were eager for a good display – the result, yet another fine bowling performance. The pick of the bowlers was Thomas Burke, who took five wickets in his opening spell of six overs; all well-deserved wickets resulting from his late in-swing and zippy pace. Still, much of his success also owed to the fact that his teammates kept up the pressure at the other end: Chris Parsonson again impressed with the new ball, claiming one wicket; Jack Vestey probed perilously close with his medium pace; and both seamer Harry Pettifer and leg-spinner Bertie Grossart bowled wicket-maidens to finish the Oundle tail.

The Stowe chase was anchored solidly by opener Hugo Ellison, who cracked seven boundaries to finish with an innings of 35 not out. Both Burke and Captain Henry Cox looked in good touch and made starts, but both were bowled choosing to play rash shots to good deliveries. Still, Tobin Mills, playing his first match for the C team, helped Ellison to eclipse the total required in very good time, with the final run-rate at 6.5 runs per over. The Stowe batting line-up looked good today, with plenty more who did not get to bat; but a win for the team is a win for all.

So a comfortable win in the end as the sun finally broke through the clouds, and most pleasant too as the Oundle side played with utmost amicability and manners. Hopefully more good cricket to come, without complacency, as the Yearlings C now chalk up their third win in a row.
Man of the Match: Thomas Burke

Yearlings B v Oundle (H) Lost by 2 wickets

Stowe 97 all out (Tom Noest 27)
Oundle 101/8 (Kinnahan 3 for 24)

A really close match, Stowe batted wildly as usual and were all out for 97. A really good fielding attack made it look like we might win, and Oundle even slumped to 67/8, but their last 2 batsmen rallied well, and Stowe were unlucky not to get the last wickets. Really close game, Stowe need desperately to tighten up in bat and learn to BAT THE 30 OVERS!
Man of the Match: Hugo Kinnahan

Waterpolo (A)

Plate final in Walsall

This was a difficult day for the Stoics. We were up against some GB players in the first two games we played and didn't find our form. Always hard playing in a senior tournament with a junior goalie. (James Blackham injury on Wednesday night).
We were expected to come 6th and last but put a hard fought effort to win against Bradford in the last game. Barney Curren was the player in our team today and well Done to him.
I am really pleased overall with our performance, 11th in England in our 1st English Schools tournament.
Stowe 5
Trinity Croyden 10
Stowe 0
