Swimming - Downe House Relays (H) (5 May)
Stowe Senior Girls pick up an unexpected 3rd place in the Freestyle Relay at Downe House yesterday. This was great stuff. In an outside lane in the heat we powered to victory knowing that there was only one bite at the cherry. Katie Wellington was outstanding and swam a personal best and produced the best turn on the day. Well Done Katie!

2nd XI v Oratory (H) Won by 24 runs
Stowe 182 for 4 (Trotter 94 no, Prideaux 46)
Oratory 158 for 7 (Barran 2 for 26)
Pinch hitter, Tom Prideaux, and skipper Ollie Trotter got Stowe off to a good start batting first against some loose opening bowling. Their hitting was controlled and measured, punishing the bad ball, but not giving their wicket away. Once Prideaux was out, Pettifer and Roe offered lusty support as Trotter continued to be the glue holding the innings together. His 94 not out was responsible when the Oratory bowlers tightened up in the middle part of the innings and aggressive towards the end to help Stowe to a formidable 182 from the 20 overs. Oratory made a good job of the chase, but were always behind the run rate. They got as close as they did thanks to some sloppy bowling, fielding and catching from Stowe, as the concession of 27 extras indicates. Secure in the knowledge of a big total, Stowe’s fielding display was not the best they have produced, but Hugo Barran was the pick of the bowlers, pitching the ball up and staying straight.
Yearlings C v Oratory (A) Won by 8 wickets
Oratory batted first and were all out for 60 after 14.5 overs.
Stowe chased and made 61-2 in 14.2 overs.
The Yearlings C team bounced back from a disappointing match against Uppingham on Saturday with immense vigour; putting in a formidable and whole-hearted display at Oratory. Under overcast skies at Woodcote, Stowe gave the home team very little say in the proceedings of this 20-over match.
An energetic display in the field, coupled with strong bowling ensured a steady stream of wickets; as the top score for Oratory was limited to six. Chris Parsonson (two wickets) was the pick of the bowlers with, finding pace and bounce with his sharp line. Tom Burke (one wicket) also caused much trouble and penetration with his outswinging deliveries, before Harry Pettifer (three wickets), Hugo Ellison (three wickets) and Montgomery Owen (one wicket) crashed through the Oratory middle and lower orders with much guile and variety.
With a low total to chase, Stowe batted comfortably, slowly reeling in the target.
Despite the early loss of Captain Henry Cox (who despite being bowled for one run had an excellent match leading the team), Jamie Montgomery kept the runs ticking over with his unbeaten 25, and was well supported by some aggressive batting from Tom Burke (racing to 11 before being bowled slogging near the end of the innings). A handy boundary from Jack Walker-Payne helped to bring the innings to a close, as Stowe made the target score with eight wickets and 34 balls to spare.
The first win of the season for the Yearlings C – hopefully a spur for more success to come.
Man of the Match: Chris Parsonso
Junior Colts B v The Oratory (H) Won by 46 runs
The Oratory 121 - 8. Robertson 15 - 4 Phipps 13 - 2
Stowe 75 all out. Consett 17 Page 15
Stowe had the pleasure of playing on The Oratory's 1st team pitch and got off to a great start with Phipps picking up 2 wickets reducing the opposition to 10-2. A decent 4th wicket partnership threatened to take the game away from Stowe however some good fielding kept the pressure on. A great spell from Oscar Robertson who picked up figures of 15 - 4 off 3 overs brought Stowe back into it as The Oratory stumbled to 90 for 7. However their No. 6 batsmen hit a few shots and Stowe gave away too many cheap extras meant that the opposition posted 120 for 8. However it was a better fielding and bowling display then Saturday so that was a good achievement.
The Stowe start matched that of the opposition as we lost 2 quick wickets. Henry Consett and Harry Cockbill started to get a partnership going but as soon as they started to break free wickets tumbled. Stowe couldn't manage to put another partnership together and apart from Page who played well for 15 and Jones out for LBW. However the team did not play as many loose shots and were out to decent balls which is another improvement.
One big area the team can learn from this game is the ability to put the balls into gaps and run singles especially on a big pitch. Hopefully this combined with the improved bowling display that was shown today will put the team back to winning ways.
MOM Oscar Robertson for his bowling spell
Catch of the day Harry Cockbill for taking a looper over his shoulder.

Yearlings A v Abingdon (H) Won 5 - 4
After a comfortable opening round, the Yearlings A team suddenly ran into stiff opposition from a revitalised Abingdon team who pushed them right to the last match. However, Stowe showed tenacity and courage to bring the match to a successful conclusion in the last round. Toby Cole and Fergus Edwards were the outstanding pair of the match, winning all three of their sets. Well done to all who played today.
Yearlings B v Abingdon (H) Won 7 - 2
After a difficult start to the season against Uppingham last Saturday, the Yearlings B team took the match to Abingdon with a will, powering through the sets with great confidence and distinction. Archie Brogden and Tom Forde were the outstanding pair of the match, making short work of their opponents. Guy Riches and Rory Knight also put in a very strong performance, with Hoagy Pollen and Henry Coldstream completing a successful outing for the team. Well done to all who played today.
Junior Colts A Drew 4.5 - 4.5
Going to the last round of matches the score was 3-3 and with first pair Nick Paine and Elliot O'Brien being well beaten by the Abingdon 1st pair Harry Warden delivered a 2 set win having been 3-1 down in the second set. The third pair of Angus Merrell and Orlando Whitehead had only won the odd game in a testing afternoon for them. Losing the first set 6-0 Abingdon moved the match from a clay court to astro assuming they had the match in the bag. Whitehead and Merrell refused to surrender and won their final set 6-2 and drawing the match overall much to the disgust of Abingdon.
Junior Colts B v Abingdon Lost 2.5 - 6.5
Arthur Lonsdale and Jack Barham spared our blushes here winning two of their sets and Ollie Findlay and Antonio Munzo Balleter picked up half a point in heir final match having come close previously in a 7-5 thriller
The Stowe Boys 1st VI Tennis team lost a tough match to Abingdon at home on Wednesday, 8-1. Playing with a compromised squad lacking Champ Panyarachun and Tom Benyon, Stowe got their one win from the match between Stowe first pair Hamish Edwards and Nic Du Bois Du Montule over the Abingdon second pair, 7-6. Hamish and Nic lost to the Abingdon first pair 1-6 and the third pair 1-6. The Stowe second pair of Dave Carter and Miles Warden lost their matches against the first, second, and third Abingdon teams by scores of 2-6, 0-6, and 1-6 respectively. The Stowe third pair of Marcus Burns and Youvir Assomull also lost there three matches 1-6, 2-6, and 1-6. With a full team, and fresh legs after Exeat, the boys hope to bounce back and defeat Akeley next Wednesday.
U15B Girls Tennis v Cokethorpe Won 8 - 1
This week we were scheduled to send one team to Cokethorpe. However, for the second time this season, our opposition declared their weakness and requested that for the sake of reasonable competition we send our B Team rather than our A Team. Three middle order pairs who would definitely benefit from the hit out were chosen. Despite the apparent one sided score line some good tennis was played and all girls were able to improve aspects of their game. In particular Lucy Smith made more forays to the net, helping her and Rebecca Dale to be the most successful pair, and Stephanie Robinson showed much improved consistency. The girls looked the part, played well and showed good sportsmanship. Well done.
Senior Girls VI v Cokethorpe Won 10 - 2
The senior girls team travelled to Cokethorpe as a combined first/second team. The first round finished with Lydia Wood/Louisa Dobbs, our number one pair, beating their second pair 6-1 and Lexy/Zara, our number two pair, winning 6-0 against their 3rd pair. Tavy de Ferranti and Hetty Hill , lost 1-6 to Cokethorpe's biggest threat of the day, their first pair, who had one particularly strong player. However, the second round was over quickly as collectively the girls only conceded 1 game - a great 6-1 win for Lexy/Zara against their 1st pair! At this point we made the decision to play 2 sets against own pairs in the final round. Lexy/Zara and
Tavy /Hetty only dropped one game between them leaving plenty of time to enjoy the delicious sandwiches and cakes whilst they watched Lydia and Louisa play a marathon two sets! Having been 4-1 up in the first set they let it go to tie break eventually narrowly losing this 5-7. In the second set they raised their game to once again go 4-1 up then found themselves back at 6-5! This time they were able to remain focused to finish at 7-5, equalling their match!
Pair of the Match: Lexy Beaty and Zara Nichols

Polo
Stowe v Eton Lost (A) 8 – 4
Stowe unfortunately lost a very exciting game of polo yesterday to Eton. Eton fielded a very strong team and the strength showed in the second chukka (which they won 3-0). Stowe managed to hold them off in the first chukka with some excellent defending from Archie Voorspuy and William Berner but could not put enough pressure on the Eton goal early on to get the opposition on the back foot. The third and fourth chukka was much better (with Stowe scoring all three of their goals in these final chukkas). Harry Railkes scored an excellent goal taking the ball in his own half and holding off a strong Eton defence to score at a full gallop. The other goal scorers were Max Dodd-Noble and Archie Voorspuy.

Lord Taverner’s 2nd Round
Stowe v MCS Oxford (A) Won by 86 runs
Stowe U15’s played MCS Oxford in the 2nd round of the Lord Taverner’s and won the toss battling on an excellent strip. Despite losing Captain Woodward early the 2nd wicket, pair Liam Gough (son of ex-England cricketer Darren Gough) and Ben Duckett (Northants Academy) put on 160. The partnership only ended with mix up and Duckett being run out for 75. Gough went on untroubled to record his 100 off the final ball of the innings and carried his bat through the innings. MCS set a daunting target of 212 to win.
The opening bowlers of Hill and Palling were very tight only gong for 34 in the first ten with two wickets. This allowed the leg-spin of Martin to operate in the knowledge that he could defend the boundaries. He picked up two wickets and with the run rate climbing Harry Consett also picked up two at the other end. With the game effectively won Captain Henry Woodward finished the innings off claiming 4 wickets for 4 runs. Stowe won by 86 runs.
Stowe moves on to play the winner of Harrow and Stepney Green College in the next round.
Stowe U16A & B v Bedford (H) Won by 6 wickets
Bedford 92 - 6 (20 overs)
Barnett 3-15
Roberts 1-5
Stowe 95 - 4 (19.3 overs)
Paine 31*
Nichols 22*
Bedford won the toss and batted first on slow but true wicket. Two danger men both hole out in deep to Barnett loopers, Rudd’s catch especially good. Excellent bowling from Cameron Roberts particularly and fielding towards the end of Bedford innings restrict them to 92 from 20, with only 16 runs coming from last 7 overs. A modest total but the match was very much in the balance when we found ourselves 33-4 from 10 overs. Enter the two Bens: Paine, back from 1st XI duty, and Ben Nichols, back from some agricultural but effective swiping in house matches. Though Paine insisted on consistently lifting up his back foot in spite of Barran’s stumping by their sharp keeper, through useful rotation of strike and some well-placed boundaries at important junctures, the pair put on 60 between them in the last 10 overs to win the match in satisfying and controlled style. Fourth win from four against a good side.
