County Cup 1st Round
Yearlings A XI beat John Hampden by 69 runs
Stowe scored 186/4 in 20.0 overs Top scores by George Jackman 72 and Arthur Newman 68. Stowe batted well but were let off on many occasions by poor fielding (dropped catches and missed run outs) which saw both openers reach half centuries. Harry Dixon Smith hit 2 sixes lower down the order to boost the impressive total. Stowe's bowlers were poor however, conceding 15 wides and 6 no balls. Stowe also dropped 2 catches, missed a run out and a stumping in the space of 12 balls! The opposition managed to accumulate 117 runs before being bowled out in the last over. Ben Robinson claiming 2 wickets for no runs in 4 balls.
Boys Tennis (28 April)
1st VI v Cokethorpe (H) Won 18 - 3
The Boys 1st VI Tennis team had a great win today against the squad from Cokethorpe. None of our doubles teams dropped more than three games in any of nine sets played. Our first doubles team of Champ Panyarachun and Hamish Edwards handily beat the Cokethorpe first doubles 6-1, their second team 6-2, and the thirds 6-0. Our second doubles team of Nicolas Du Bois Du Montule and David Carter won their three matches 6-3, 6-3, and 6-1. Likewise, our third doubles team of Miles Warden and Marcus Burns also beat the Cokethorpe 1st, 2nd, and 3rds by the same margin, 6-3, 6-3, and 6-1. The boys played well and look forward to continuing their success away at Uppingham this Saturday.
Yearlings A & B VI v Bloxham (A) Won 2 – 7
Our U14 A & B teams were keen to carry on their winning ways. Megan Duckett and Charlotte Berrill were back from their extended stay in New York so the A team was at full strength. With these two dropping only 3 games the entire afternoon it became apparent that we would be too strong for them. Alice Hughes and Maddie Wackett also followed suit and won all three sets with a close tie break in the last set to finish off a successful day. Lydia North and Lucy Horan chipped in with an important victory and were unlucky to lose a close tie break against the Bloxham 1st pair.
Girls Tennis (28 April)
U14A v Bloxham - Won 7 - 2
Our U14B team also notched up another impressive victory, following on from Wellingborough on Saturday with our 1st pair of Lily Comyn and Imo Wallersteiner also dropping only 3 games the entire afternoon. The other two pairs of Katkin Farr/Bella Kelly and Izzy Taylor/India Cornish lost only to Bloxhams 1st pair, therefore coming out winners by 7 sets to 2.
U15A v Bloxham 5 sets (40 games) to 4 sets (30 games)
Wallersteiner and Lechmere led well from the front dropping only 2 games in 3 sets. Smith and Berner struggled to gel as a pair and have left the door open for those eager to break into the A team. Welford and Lewis started with impressive wins over the top two Bloxham pairs but ironically went down against the 3rd pair.
U15B v Bloxham 7 sets (50 games) to 2 sets (23 games)
All three pairs showed a good attitude on the court and competed well. Dale and Leech, in their first outing together, pulled off the triple while our 2nd and 3rd pairs both won 2 out of 3. Comyn and Du Bois de Montule (3rd pair) almost pulled off a big win against Bloxham's 1st pair but match point at 5-3 somehow turned into a 5-7 loss. Hut and Merrell were also with chances against the 1st pair but need to improve their footspeed.
1st VI v Bloxham (H) Won 7-2
It was a very successful afternoon of tennis for the 1st VI against Bloxham. Iszy and Lucy, our number one pair, won all three of their matches, conceding only four games in total as did Danni Allard and Pia Herrmann at second pair! We were in a strong position going into the final round leading 4 -2 needing to win only one more....! Although Lydia Wood and Imogen Voorspuy had lost their first two matches they were the ones to take the important victory beating their own pair 6-3. The match was played in great, competitive spirit and we feel increasingly confident as we look forward to Uppingham at home on Saturday.
Pair of the Match: Iszy Cameron and Lucy Beaty
2nd VI v Bloxham (H) Won 6 - 3
The 2nd VI enjoyed their fixture against Bloxham with a strong performance in particular from Lexy and Zara who won all three of their matches including beating their 1st pair 6-3. Again we were 4-2 up going into the final round and there was still all to play for! Phoebe Avent and Louisa Dobbs, having already beaten their 2nd pair 6-4, were the couple to win the match keeping their cool to also beat their own pair 6-4. Hetty Hill and Octavia de Ferranti won against the Bloxham 3rd pair and were in a close battle against their own pair narrowly losing 5-7. A great achievement for the start of the season - well done!
Pair of the Match: Lexy Beaty and Zara Nichols
3rd VI v Bloxham (H) Lost 3 - 6
The Girls' 3rd team used this match to get used to their pairings and competition, but succumbed to Bloxham in a 3-6 match. Pair of the Match Fleur Chevenix-Trench & Georgie Duthie came out with two wins out of three, one of them ending at tie-break 12-10 in the final game of the match and the last game to finish playing on the courts. The other pairs, Georgie Drummond & Sarah Warner, and Bryony Seekins & Charlotte Cooke, were competitive and intense throughout the day and look forward to the next match.
Pair of the Match: Fleur Chevenix-Trench & Georgie Duthie
Girls 4th VI v Bloxham (H) Won 7 - 2
The Girls's 4th team started their wins early against Bloxham and never looked back, ending their day with a victory of 7-2. Emily Beatty and Annabelle Duthie were awarded Pair of the Match for their 3 consecutive wins, including their victory against Bloxham's Number 1 pair, 7-5. Partners Pinny Stuart-Mills and Looch Trevor and Lottie Phillips and Elle Melville ended the day with two wins each. It was a great day for 4ths tennis, who have seemed to already found their comfort on the courts.

1st XI v Reading Blue Coats (H) Won by 9 wickets
RBC 157 for 6
Stowe 159 for 1
The 1st XI completed a comprehensive victory over Reading Blue Coats today, chasing down a total of 158 in 23.5.
Using Pink balls for the first time John Gurney (1 for 20) and Josh Sainsbury-Bow (2 for 30) made early breakthroughs to reduce RBC to 50 for 3 off the first 12 overs. A good fielding display and more tight bowling from Alastair Birkby meant that although Stowe were not taking wickets, RBC never got on top of the bowling and were restricted to 157 off their 30 overs.
Despite the early loss of James MacDonald, Alastair Birkby (68 n.o.) and Ben Duckett (62 n.o.) picked off the RBC bowling attack, accummalating initially - pushing the balls into gaps and running well, and then once the bowlers tired - hitting it to all parts of the field to finish with a flurry of boundaries.
This win should give the team confidence going into the National Twenty/20 competition on Sunday.
2nd XI v Reading Blue Coat (H) Won by 9 wickets
Reading BC 153 all out (Ejindu 3-18)
Stowe 154-1 (Trotter 38, Hood 52 no, Johnson 46 no)
Tight bowling from Andrew Welford and Tom Prideaux at the start of the RBC innings was followed by an excellent spell by Ify Ejindu who bowled full and straight. However, Ify’s extraction from the attack led to a loose period of bowling that allowed RBC to accumulate a reasonable total, until Ify came back to clear up the innings with two wickets in the three balls. In Stowe’s reply, Ollie Trotter and Archie Hood took advantage of the poor balls offered to them with a display of controlled aggression and when Ollie was out Miles Johnson followed suit. Stowe had the game wrapped up after 20 overs with Archie Hood unbeaten on 52 not out and Miles on 46 not out. A straightforward win in the end, but we will not be able to have a dodgy period in the field against Uppingham.
Junior Colts A 170 - 4 declared off 37 overs (Woodward 51 & Gough 67*)
Abingdon 174 - 4 off 34.5 overs (Drinkwater 4.1.16.0 & Constant 5.0.18.2)
Stowe's captain, Henry Woodward, won the toss and chose to bat in the first game of their 2010 season. He and Russell White got the innings off to an excellent start and put on 56 runs for the first wicket. White gave his wicket away cheaply to a full toss and this brought Liam Gough to the crease. Liam scored quickly to start, hitting very well straight and along the ground. Abingdon then brought on their two spinners and the run rate slowed dramatically. Woodward and Gough struggled to pick up the pace of the innings in these overs and the momentum changed. Woodward was stumped the ball after reaching his well deserved half century and by the time Stow declared, Liam was unbeaten on 67, a fine first innings of the season. Unfortunately, Liam aggravated an old knee injury during his innings and was unable to take the field to bowl.
Abingdon were keen to chase down this competitive total from the off and their Number 2 batsmen was particularly brutal, dealing only in boundaries for his first 24 runs. Harry Consett picked up the other opener with an excellent full delivery, but the Abingdon batsmen continued to take the game away from Stowe. Woodward tried a number of different bowling changes to try and force a wicket, with Drinkwater bowling an excellent controlled spell, but it was the spin of Constant which got the breakthrough. Sadly it was too late and Abingdon reached the total with 3.1 overs to spare and 6 wickets remaining.
This was a frustrating result, after a positive start. It just shows the importance of keeping an innings going and the need for early wickets when bowling.
Junior Colts B v Akeley Wood ‘A’ XI (H) Won by 90 runs.
JCB 137 - 8 (Page 42, Fitzherbert 30)
Akeley Wood 47 all out. (Page 2-3, Phipps 8-2 and Consett 5-2)
The Junior Colts B won their second game of the season in convincing fashion. Batting first Fitzherbert lead the way with 30 however Stowe struggled to gather momentum in the middle of the innings and things looked a little bleak at 73 for 5. However the arrival of Oscar Page changed the game. Oscar swung hard and ran fast helping the score up to 137 against a decent bowling attack. Oscar was finally out for 42.
Page then took the new ball and picked up a wicket maiden of his first over with Harry Roberts taking a cracking catch. Phipps followed up with 2 wickets in his over. Page's 2nd over picked up another 2 wickets leaving Akeley 9 for 5 after 3 overs. The pressure was kept up as different bowlers got their chance and wickets tumbled. Consett picked up 2, Roberts 1, Jones 1 and Carrolet wrapped up the game with the last wicket of his first ball leaving Akeley all out for 47.
A good batting performance against a decent attack was the building blocks for victory. Running between the wickets needs to be improved to make sure the boys post more convincing totals.

1st XI v Uppingham (A) Draw
Uppingham 190 all out
Stowe 133 for 8 (B Duckett – 70)
Thanks to a very mature innings of 70 from Ben Duckett and a battling 28 not out from Josh Sainsbury-Bow Stowe managed to secure a draw with Uppingham on Saturday.
Electing to bowl first in helpful conditions Stowe took 3 wickets within the first 14 overs with fine opening spells from John Gurney and Josh Sainsbury-Bow. Having secured the prize wicket of Thakor Stowe took their foot off the pedal until Will Berner broke a partnership of 40 - Ali Birkby taking a good low catch at slip. Uppingham’s innings stuttered along with wickets falling at regular intervals – all the bowlers bowling tidy spells. Ali Birkby (2 – 39) and Will Berner (1 – 20) were particularly economically but the bowling plaudits have to go to the opening pair who finished with 5 wickets between them.
Stowe were confident of chasing down the total, but a good opening burst from Thakor accounted for openers MacDonald and Sutton and an unfortunate mix-up resulted in Ali Birkby being run out. From 19 for 3 at tea it was always going to be a tall order to chase down the runs required but the youngsters Jake Olley and Ben Duckett put on a partnership of 50 and were just starting to dominate the bowling when Olley was dubiously trapped leg before. Ben Curley went in the next over to leave Stowe 66 for 5 with only 20 overs to go – effectively ending the run chase. John Gurney looked assured until he ran himself out, which brought in Sainsbury-Bow who batted with great restraint and good shot selection and put on 50 with Duckett. These two batted together into the last 4 overs until Ben tried one hook shot too many and gloved behind. This left a tense three overs to survive, made tenser when Henry Rudd chipped one to gully. 10 balls to survive with 2 wickets in hand. Fortunately Will Berner saw off Thakor’s last four balls and Sainsbury-Bow played out the last over in the only way he knows how – whacking 3 boundaries!. Many positives from the day, but still lots to work on. If the team can string both parts of their game together in one match they will be a formidable side.
Yearlings A (U14) v Uppingham (A) Won by 4 wickets
Uppingham 85 all out from 24 overs
(Kinahan 3-9, Newman 3 for 15)
Stowe 86 for 6
(Jackman 26, Dixon-Smith 26)
Stowe went into the field and again was positive from the first ball. An outstanding piece of fielding by Alfie Hardman in the gully kept the batsmen on their toes and a fine display of swing bowling saw Hill account for the openers with only a few runs on the board. A brief rally by Uppingham was halted by Dixon-Smith and Kinahan before Newman bowled a controlled spell to finish off the innings. It was another assured display inn the field and the energy and organisation in the field was a credit to Jackman who kept things buzzing the whole way through.
Stowe's openers looked very comfortable but a couple of pieces of lazy cricket put the pressure on when both Newman and Robinson were run out needlessly. Two freak dismissals (Jackman caught off the leg of slip and Noest stumped) made the anxiety levels raise slightly but Dixon-Smith calmly took Stowe to just short of the total before Hardman hit the winning runs.
Not a great game of cricket but another very impressive performance by this rather exciting group of cricketers.
Yearlings B (U14) XI v Uppingham (A) Won by 24 runs
Stowe 101 all out (Henry Wheeler 29 not out)
Uppingham 77 all out (Harry Rees 4 for 18)
Stowe won the toss and batted first. With a target to bat the 30 overs, the openers set a good example, and at 33 for no loss after 11 overs it was looking very healthy. Then a couple of silly shots to a new spin bowler saw both openers gone and the middle order collapsed, and Stowe slumped to 47 for 5. But a desperately needed late stand from Henry Wheeler propped up the Stowe score, and Wheeler's 29 not out helped pushed the Stowe score just over 100, which was important psychologically as not reaching 100 could have demoralised the team. Unfortunately, Wheeler ran out of partners and Stowe was bowled out for 101 after 26 overs.
Uppingham went into bat full of confidence needing only 3 an over but Stowe's bowlers were really on fire today, and the openers started with a tight spell giving 12 runs from 4 overs. Then captain Max Robinson decided it was time for the spin attack, and Cornett and Rees tried their hand. Cornett saw away 2 batsmen with one catch himself and an excellent catch from Jack Vestey at square leg, for a double wicket maiden. Rees followed with another maiden. Uppingham had no answer for Stowe's excellent bowling and well positioned field, and Cornett and Rees ripped through the middle order, Stowe also made 3 run outs with excellent fielding, including an incredible direct hit from Mike Hill. Rees finally took the last wicket in his second spell to end Uppingham's day at 77 all out. An impressive win.
Man of the Match: Harry Rees
Yearlings C (U14) v Abingdon (A) Lost by 6 wickets.
Stowe won the toss and batted first, all out for 64 (yes, no mistake)
Abingdon chased, and made 65-5 after 14.3 overs.
Despite the very hopeful sunshine out in Rutland, this was a most uninspiring match for Stowe, and all the Stoic players were universally disappointed in the team’s performance. A fine batting wicket accounted for nought, as some very poor batting conditions, a lack of patience on the part of the Stowe top order, and some tight bowling from Uppingham’s opening seamers led to the loss of three wickets within the first three overs.
Archie Grossart (9), Tom Burke (13) and Captain Henry Cox (12) steadied the middle-order ship for a while, grinding out starts, but were their own worst enemies as they also fell through rash decision-making. Wicket-keeper Jonathan Dann was the pick of the batters, holding the tail-end together for some respectability as he put on some precious few runs for his 14 not out. After some admirable flourish, Josh Macmillan fell as Stowe’s last wicket, in the 19th over.
Still, Stowe did bowl commendably – and there was significantly more penetration and purpose than demonstrated in last week’s display against Abingdon. Both Macmillan and Parsonson bowled with good pace; and both were rewarded with a wicket each. Burke, who picked up two wickets, provided excellent relief with his very direct and jagging deliveries, and his paced caused the Uppingham batters difficulty.
However, despite bowling well, there just weren’t enough runs on the board for Stowe to defend, and Uppingham easily reached the target. Some more runs for Stowe would have given the bowlers a chance against the Uppingham tail-end, but alas, this was not to be. Some real soul-searching needed for the Stowe players, before another away match against Oratory on Wednesday.
Man of the match: Tom Burke
Yearlings D (U14) XI v Uppingham (A) Won by 6 wickets.
Uppingham 91
(Harry Pettifer, 4 - 24)
(Mongomery Owen, 3 - 12)
(Hugo Ellison, 1 - 15)
(Nicholas Whitmore, 1 - 21)
(Rollo Chadd, 1 - 3)
Stowe 95 for 4 (13.5 overs)
(Louis Palmer, 39)
(Tobin Mills, Hugo Ellison, 13)
(Hannington Morgan, 10)
(Timon White, Harry Pettifer, Not out 4)
Stowe won the toss and elected to field first. Stowe got off to a fantastic start dismissing 3 batsmen in 6 overs. Thanks to a magnificent bowling attack from Pettifer and Owen, the home team was restricted to only 91. Pettifer taking a wicket maiden and Owen taking a double wicket maiden and Chadd with a tight bowling attack only conceding 3 runs in 3 overs with 1 wicket and 1 maiden. Stowe showed brilliance in the field conceding only 11 boundaries and taking 6 catches. Uppingham's bowling attack started off very strong but Palmer and Mills held strong and saw off their openers. Palmer went on to score a well deserved 39 but gave up his wicket stupidly with only one run to win. Some very strong performances from Ellison, Morgan, White and Pettifer saw the game to its end. Despite having 3 Lower 5th formers in their team, Uppingham were no match for Stowe.
Junior Colts B (U15) XI v Uppingham (H) Lost by 8 wickets
Stowe 105 all out
Uppingham 106 for 2
A disappointing day all round for the JCBs leading to a loss against a decent Uppingham team. The team were put into bat and got of to a bad start with Fitzherbert chipping up the second ball of the day. This set the tone and one by one each Stowe batsman got themselves out playing poor shots putting the score at 64 for 5. A valiant 22 from George Jones was one of the high points of the day. Eventually he was out and the innings fizzled out to 105 all out in 18 overs.
Drax and Phipps took the new ball and Drax struck in the second over reducing Uppingham to 5-1 however pressure could not be retained in the field and Uppingham raced away. Pepera making his debut for the JCBs came on and bowled well and was the pick of the bowling. He finished with 10 - 1 picking up the second wicket with a nice full ball. The game continued to go away from Stowe despite a better intensity in the field and Uppingham picked up the winnings runs in the 18th over ruining the JCBs undefeated record.
Overall a lacklustre day that included poor shot selection, loose bowling and sluggish fielding. The team must bounce back from this and play to the potential that they have shown in the earlier matches and learn from their mistakes that were made today.
Men of the match: Luke Pepera and George Jones
Junior Colts C (U15) v Uppingham (H) lost by 147 runs.
Uppingham 246 for 6 (Merlin Rothschild 42 for 4)
Stowe 99 all out (Josh Dickinson 29
Not a great-looking scorecard but there was a spell of inspired bowling from Merlin and some tenacious defensive batting from the whole team but especially Josh. Plenty to build on.
Girls Tennis (1 May)
1st VI vs Uppingham (H) Lost 2 - 7
Iszy and Lucy made an encouraging start in the first round beating their 3rd pair 6-1 but it was already evident that Uppingham were going to prove to be strong opponents. All matches comprised of some great rallies and some impressive points were won but Uppinham had the edge being more consistent and patient at crucial times. There was still all to play for as we went into the final round as Danni and Pia also beat their 3rd pair 6-4 to take the score to 2-4 overall at this stage. However, although all the matches went to 3-6, it wasn't to be today. We have to enjoy the opportunity to have played an afternoon of good tennis and look forward to the next match.
2nd VI v Uppingham (H) Lost 3 - 6
The 2nd team made an extremely positive start to this fixture with both Lexy and Zara, our 1st pair, and Tavy and Hetty, our 3rd pair winning their first round matches 6-2 and 6-4 respectively. In the next round Phoebe and Heli had their chance to shine by beating their 3rd pair 6-4. This put us in a strong position going into the final round equal at 3-3. However, despite extremely close games we didn't manage to win one! The girls are improving each match both tactically and by communicating with their partner so we can continue to build on this for next time.
3rd VI v Uppingham (H) Won 6 – 3
The senior 3rd Tennis team walked off the courts on Saturday with their head held high in their victory over Uppingham 6-3. Playing evenly matched pairs, Uppingham challenged our Stoics to carefully place their shots and take patience in their rallies. Katie Robertson and Sarah Warner are named Pair of the Match for winning all of their games (6-4, 6-2, 6-0) after only just becoming a partner set on Thursday. Well done ladies!
4th VI v Uppingham (H) Lost 0-9
A tough day for the U16s, who finished their match on Saturday with a loss against Uppingham. Though not for lack of effort, the Stoics struggled mostly with Uppingham's serves and it was difficult for them to come ahead at any point of the day. Pinny Stuart-Mills and Looch Trevor are named Pair of the Match for their focus, well placed shots, and service. With more practice on the return of serve, the U16 should be able to regroup for their next match against Downe House after exeat.
U14A VI v Uppingham (A) Won 7 - 2
The team played some excellent tennis this afternoon. This has been a fixture in the past where we have struggled to compete and it makes a very nice change to be driving home knowing that we were the better team by a long way today!. Megan and Charlotte were too consistent in their rallies for any of the Uppingham pairs and finished yet again without dropping a set. Alice and Maddie play a slightly more attacking game which is exciting to watch and actually today came out with the strongest scores of them all, dropping only 7 games all day. Lucy and Lydia produced a strong win over the second pair, but found the first pair too strong and perhaps lost concentration against the 3rd pair who they know they should have beaten! Prior to the match I thought we might sneak a 5-4 win so to come away with a 7-2 win is exceptional!
U14B & U14C VI v Uppingham (A)
Congratulations to the U14B & C teams as they both had to endure last minute changes because of illness, but fought hard to lose narrowly by 4 sets to 5 in both cases. Olivia Savage and Olivia Hunter should be praised as they were a last minute pairing, but were too strong for the Uppingham C team as they won all three sets.
Boys Tennis (1 May)
1st VI v Uppingham (A) Drew
The competition proved so close that the teams struggled to a draw, 4.5 to 4.5. The first pair of Champ Panyarachun and Hamish Edwards handily swept their three matches, dispatching the Uppingham first pair 6-0, 6-2, the second pair 6-2, and the third pair 6-4. Though missing teammate Nic Du Bois Du Montule, David Carter and replacement partner Tom Benyon played excellent tennis all day, losing to the Uppingham first pair 2-6, but defeating the third pair 6-2 and splitting sets against the second pair 6-4 and 2-6. Finally, the Stowe third pair of Marcus Burns and Youvir Assomull played well to withstand much of the barrage coming from some aggressive net play from the Uppingham teams. Unfortunately it proved too much, as they were defeated by the first pair 0-6, the second doubles team 1-6, and the evenly matched third pair 4-6, 4-6. The team learned a lot from their outing and look forward to defeating Abingdon at home this Wednesday. Man of the match: Tom Benyon
2nd VI v Uppingham (A) Lost 2 - 7
Stowe faced an Uppingham squad with a lot of depth and home court advantage. The combination proved too much as the team lost 2-7. The first pair of Francis Rowlands and James Dale started off the day with strong wins against the Uppingham second and third pairs, 6-4 and 7-6 respectively, battling back from 1-5 down in the latter match to pull it out. Unfortunately they lost some steam in the final match, falling to the first pair 1-6, 3-6. The second pair of Will Siddeley and See-Ho Leung played a few close sets but could not finish strongly, losing to the first pair 2-6, the second pair 2-6, 4-6, and the third pair 4-6. The third pair of Harry Lester and Daniel Robinson battled injuries and failed to find their groove, losing 1-6 to the first pair, 0-6 to the second pair, and 0-6, 2-6 to the third pair. They too look forward to bouncing back with a victory against Abingdon this Wednesday at home.

Prior to the match I thought we might sneak a 5-4 win so to come away with a 7-2 win is exceptional!
Yearlings A (U14) v Uppingham (H) Won 6 - 3
In their first match of the season, the Yearlings A team gave an impressive performance against a strong Uppingham side. Both 1st and 2nd pair won all three of their matches, with Toby Cole and Fergus Edwards dropping only 7 games to 18 won in the whole afternoon. Will de Boinville and Hugo Hiley showed great skill and determination to win their three matches, pulling out all the stops to beat the first pair 7-5 in a thrilling final match. Well done to all who played today.
Yearlings B U14) v Uppingham (H) Lost 2 - 7
In their first match of the season, the Yearlings B team put in a solid performance, but found that the Uppingham side dominated all afternoon, dropping only 2 of the 9 matches. Jasper Upton and Rory Knight proved solid at first pair, and there is no doubt we will see great things from all the pairs as the season progresses. Well done to all who played today.
