Stowe 1st v Bedford (H) Won 4 - 1
After a challenging match at Rugby last week, the Stowe team came back in force to triumph over the Bedford senior squash team. Captain Josh Sainsbury-Bow took less than 20 minutes to defeat his opponent, while James Saunders won man of the match with a steady and confident 3-0 victory at number 3. Daniel Robinson and newcomer Francis Rowlands also won their respective contests, adding real credibility to the Stowe side. Well done to all who played today, and we look forward to building on this success next week as the team takes on Berkhamsted.
Hockey (3 February 2010)
1st XI v Royal Grammar Scholl High Wycombe (A) Lost 4 - 3
Stowe started strong and the team made our tactics and formation work, with Geordie Wilkes a slightly deeper CF marking their playmaker out the game. This positive start was converted into goals after 3 short corner goals. RGS got one back just before half time with a deflected flick form a short corner. Stowe went into half time 3-1 up and thoroughly deserved their lead. RGS came out hard into the second half and we didn't deal with the pressure very well and lost our composure. RGS continued to force forward and they scored 2 further short corner goals before slotting a winner with 5 minutes to go. Stowe had a couple of opportunities to get another goal but could find the net.
Man of the match - Ollie Trotter, Goals - Richardson, Rudd and Birkby
Junior Colts A v Royal Grammar School High Wycombe (H) Lost 2 - 1
After a break from match play, with the 'tour' match against Wisbech (Netherlands) being cancelled, Stowe looked a little sluggish against a much higher standard of opponent than those of the previous two games. Despite this, Stowe was quick to attack the RGS 25 and had a number of early chances. RGS had a very skilful and quick midfield, which began to take control of the game and were denied a number of good attacks by excellent saves from Angus Craven. Stowe was quick to counter attack but Ben Duckett failed to convert a number of opportunities. RGS were first on the score sheet with a well worked short corner routine and a good finish by their stand out player. A further two missed chances at the other end, left Stowe one nil down at half time.
In the second half Stowe shored things up in the defence, but was always chasing the game a little. Jake Olley slammed home a great goal after an excellent solo dribble into the RGS D, to level the scores. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before RGS attacked; hitting the ball into our D and a deflection sent the ball past a despairing Craven. The Stowe defenders were adamant that this had not touched an RGS stick, but the goal stood. Stowe then lost shape trying to chase the game and get back into match, so we reverted to 4-4-2 to enable a little more security in midfield. This definitely worked and Stowe had a few more good chances which went begging.
The final whistle brought huge disappointment to a Stowe side who knew they should have got more than they did from this game. A good lesson learnt and on to the next game against Haberdasher's Aske's.
Man of the match - Angus Craven, Goals; Jake Olley
Yearlings A v Sir William Borlase (A) Lost 5 - 1
On a filthy evening, the U14 took to the field against a strong looking Borlase side. With only 11 players it was always going to be tough but Stowe made it even harder for themselves by starting slowly and allowing Borlase to take a quick 2 goal lead. The Stowe midfield and defenders looked mesmerised by the stick skills of the Borlase playmakers and panicked slightly. Borlase then scored a third through an extraordinary drag flick from a short corner. However, Stowe had their chances and denied the Borlase midfield the ball for a lot of the first half. The score 4 - 0 at half time
The game looked all but over and Stowe came out fighting and dominated large sections of the second half, with Dixon-Smith scoring from a short corner. Newman and Kinahan had a great second half and there was the usual tireless running from George Jackman. It was Alfie Hardman, however, who was the man of the match. He made some exceptional saves and was unlucky not to have kept a second half clean sheet.
The boys will now go to the regional’s. They must learn that starving the opposition's play makers of ball can give them a chance against any opposition.

Stowe U14B v Tudor Hall (A) Lost 12 - 0
The U14Bs had their first game of the year against Tudor Hall, and fell 12 - 0. However, the girls took the match as a learning experience in terms of their defensive skills and stick work. Coco Anthony dominated the centre position, while both Clarriss Skelton and Priscilla Powell stood out on the defensive end. Morgan Smith also did her best on the offensive side. Special recognition goes to first-time goalie Becca Wild, who saved 7 goals for the day.
Senior 2nd XII v Rencomb (A) Lost 8 – 2
The Senior 2nd's travelled to Rencomb College to take on Rencomb's 1st lacrosse team. Everybody played well and after a long trip to get there and a short warm-up, the 2nd's fell to Rencomb 1st by a score of 8-2. Goals were scored by Lottie Phillips and Charlotte Cook. Lara de Keyser picked up an assist on the afternoon. Jo Chung did a great job in the goal for Stowe. Great job today ladies you fought hard and I am very proud of the effort you girls showed.
Senior 3rd XII v Rencomb (A) Won 7 - 2
Despite the cold and wet conditions at Rendcomb the Stowe 3rd team played an outstanding first game. Each player on the team contributed to the 7 - 2 victory. Goal Scorers: Pinny Stuart Mills 3 goals, Daisy Simpson 2 goals and Jess Noakes 2 goals. Special mentions to Kitty Fisher(for her first game on the lacrosse field and not in the goal) Clarissa Pugh and Sophy Carew who after 2 weeks playing lacrosse managed to get a good shot on goal and some great defence.
U15B v Tudor Hall (H) Lost 6 - 3
The U15B Stoics played a difficult game against Tudor Hall on Wednesday. The Stoics were impressive, having some beautiful midfield play, but were unable to come away with a win. In the first half, Rosie Marsden-Smedley and Izzy Berner led the attack with one goal each. Honor Turner stepped up in the goal with three saves. In the second half, Turner moved to the midfield and contributed the loan goal for the half. Daisy Anderson, played a great half in the defence during the first half and played in goal for the second half, making four saves.
Goal Scorers: Rosie Marsden-Smedley, Izzy Berner, Honor Turner
Player of the match: Honor Turner, Daisy Anderson.

Sam Strutt Gold 50m Senior Freestyle
Francis Smiley Silver 50m Butterfly - Junior boys School Record
James Blackham Bronze 50m Butterfly
Will Jackson Bronze 50m Backstroke
Senior Boys Bronze 4x50m Freestyle Relay (Blackham,White,Fitzroy,Strutt)
Inter boys Bronze 4x50m Medley Relay (Jackson,Charlesworth,Smiley,Blackburne)
Francis Smiley 4th 100m I.M. - Junior Boys School Record
The other swimmers came in just out of the medals, but overall this was a good day for the swimming team. We found it hard to emulate last years success with Anders Palm and Harry Hawkes unavailable to swim. The Inter boys set the standard by coming 4th in the Medley and then a 3rd place in the Freestyle relay. The senior boys followed the Inters with a bronze. Will Jackson and James Blackham gained another 2 Bronzes as the afternoon carried on. The best was still to come with a fantastic silver medal for Francis Smiley breaking the school record in the 50m Butterfly. Francis still has a couple of years in the same age group. Gold beckons for him in the stars. We struck gold at the end of the meet with Sam Strutt's 50m Freestyle swim.
The girls found it harder to find their form at this meet. Ellie Pinnock in the 100m IM was able to break the school record but fell out of the medals. The senior girls were unlucky to follow suit. Harder training and fine tuning are needed for their next encounter.

U14A v Rendcomb (W) 7 - 1
The U14A squad demonstrated phenomenal teamwork and skill mastery in their first home match against Rendcomb College. Goal scorers of the day included Bella Kelly (2), Charlotte Berrill (2), Meghan Duckett, Alice Hughes, and Lucy Horan. Lucy, Alic and Heloise Kleinwort were essential in the middle, easily passing and running to transition the ball from our defence to offence. Lily Comyn and Katkin Farr dominated our defensive end, causing tackles and interceptions to protect goalie Becca Wild, who finished the day with 2 saves.
U15A v Rendcomb (H) Win 10 - 3
The U15A team played their best lacrosse of the season on Thursday in a match against Rendcomb. They passed with precision, caught well, played consistent defence all over the field, and maximized scoring opportunities. In the first half, Hattie Comyn scored the first goal assisted by Rebecca Dale. Carla Springer, Laura Welford, and Ellie Holt each added a goal. Welford then scored the next two, the first of which was assisted by Dale. Comyn scored the last goal of the half assisted by Steph Robinson. The Stoics held Rendcomb to just one goal in the first half. The second half started with goals from Springer and Annie Hutt. Rendcomb managed to score just two more goals before Comyn ended the game with a goal assisted by Welford. Charlie Lechmere led the efforts in the midfield coming up with the ball time and time again after the draw.
Goal Scorers: Hattie Comyn (3), Laura Welford (3), Carla Springer (2), Ellie Holt (1), Annie Hutt (1). Player of the match: Charlie Lechmere

U18 County Cup
Stowe v The Royal Latin School (W) 26 - 24
In a pulsating game of basketball dominated by both defences Stowe managed to steal victory in the closing moments of the game. Stowe began the sharper to take the first quarter 7-2 with Gurney and Panyarachun doing the scoring. In truth Stowe should have gone in 20 points up but failed to take their chances. The second quarter proved fruitful for RLS as they dominated it by 11-2. Stowe rallied in the third quarter. A 3-pointer from Du Bois brought Stowe to within 4 points of RLS. Warden and Gurney added to the scoring before Gurney picked up his fourth foul of the game. This left the game finely balanced with RLS ahead 21-18 with one quarter remaining. With Gurney on the bench Baniukevic was called into action on his first team debut. Lawal, Abbagana, Carter, Athigapanich and Kim all made useful contributions particularly in defence. Gurney started the final quarter on the bench but was reintroduced into the game with Stowe trailing by 5. Du Bois and Warden hit 2 vital baskets to close the gap to one point. Gurney then picked up an offensive foul which meant he could take no further part in the game. Stowe remained solid in defence with Du Bois and Warden snuffing out the main threat of RLS. Two quick breaks saw two more Stowe baskets to take Stowe 26-23 up with a minute to go. Barr of RLS was fouled on the drive so he went to the line, scored the first but missed the second. RLS forced a turn-over and came back down the court with seconds remaining. RLS managed to get a last shot off on the hooter but missed and Stowe ran out winners by the narrowest of margins.
Hockey (6 February 2010)
1st XI v Haberdasher’s Aske (H) Won 5 – 1
Stowe had a good warm up but failed to convert this into positive play at the start. Despite seeing more of the ball we lacked composure and Habs scored a breakaway goal. Gradually Stowe started to gain more confidence but still lacked options from defence and there was a serious lack of depth to the play. Stowe scored 2 short corners to take the score to 2-1 at half time.
The second half started very positively for Stowe as we looked to keep possession and maintain out composure. Billy Richardson scored his second of the day to take the score to
3-1. Habs then scored a scrappy goal that the Stowe defence should have dealt with. Stowe went onto score one shorter corner and a goal from open play by Will Berner.
2nd XI v Haberdasher’s Aske (H) Lost 1 – 3
A good game, where Hab’s just proved a little stronger in their positional awareness and finishing. Tom Bacon had an excellent game on centre mid and scored our only goal (a forward drive through cover!). Much promise but still looking for more dynamism inside the opposition goal area.
Colts A v Haberdasher's Aske (A) Lost 3 - 2
A fast and skilful Habs side probably deserved to win this match and if they had used their numerous short corners more effectively, they might have done so more easily. However, Michael Evans in goal was excellent and kept the scores level at half time after Rob Hill had finished a good move down the Stowe right to cancel out the Habs first goal. A ferociously struck short corner from Ben Paine put Stowe in the lead with 20 minutes left, but Habs pressure told in the end, although to concede the winning goal in the closing minutes was harsh on a hard-working Stowe side. Man of the match: Michael Evans. Mention in dispatches to Sam Tottenham.
Colts B v Haberdasher's Aske (A) Won 5 - 0
Jack Palmer in the Stowe goal made several vital saves in the first half to leave the half time score 0-0 in an even contest. However, Stowe’s superior physicality and fitness told in the second half and once the first goal went in from Cameron Roberts, the floodgates opened and Stowe made a Habs side that had been unbeaten as Junior Colts look ordinary. The goals were scored by Cameron Roberts (3) and Seb Clarke (2) . Man of the match: Jack Palmer.
Junior Colts B XI v Haberdasher Aske's (A) Won 0 - 1
A battling performance if not a fluent one to defeat Haberdasher's Aske by one goal to nil. Hab's had the better of the first half until the last five minutes when Stowe finally strung some passes together and a nice move ended up with Ollie Findlay in space at the top of the D, which he slotted home nicely. Stowe started the second half confidently and started to play some better hockey, dominating possession, and the play was predominately in the opposition half. Tristan Phipps made some excellent runs from the back and Roland Parker had an outstanding game on the wing. Hab's still looked dangerous on the break and it was thanks to some fine saves from James Drax that kept the score line to one nil. However, it was Will Plant that took the man of the match award as he always seemed to be in the right place at the back, made some incisive tackles and generally kept a cool head under pressure. The Hab's coach also made special mention of him after the game.
Basketball (6 February 2010)
Stowe Senior Team v Eton (H) Won 48 - 38
Stowe made a sluggish start and were soon 11-4 down in the first quarter. Captain Gurney and Du Bois pulled a couple of baskets back but the main psychological boost was Kostic’s 3-pointer right at the end of the first quarter which kept Stowe in touch, but still trailing 15-11. Stowe completely dominated the second quarter. Great man-to-man defence from Warden, Kim, Du Bois, Gurney and Panyarachun reduced Eton to only 8 points for the quarter. No fewer than 6 players scored baskets in this quarter as Stowe came from 4 down to end the quarter 7 up. Eton's No. 9 Liatand played out of his skin to hit 13 of Eton’s 15 points in the second half but Stowe’s miserly defence stood firm. With Gurney on top of his offensive game and good contributions from the other team members, Stowe just had enough fire power to keep their opponents at bay. Eton did close to within 5 points in the last 2 minutes but 3 points from Kim and 2 from Du Bois sealed a well-deserved victory.

Stowe U16 v Eton (H) Lost 36 - 15
A lack of focus led to a horrendous start for Stowe, and the team found themselves down nil-9 by the end of the first quarter, having been overrun by some Eton play which was not particularly sparkling. However, a remarkable surge in ambition in the second quarter – particularly from Branson scholars Kabelo Phalatse and Andiswa Nyathi – saw Stowe deny Eton any easy points in the period. Sadiq Abbagana and Daniel Baniukevic chimed in with some good attacking play to capitalise on this defensive effort, which saw Stowe claw back to 9-13 at half-time. Yet, the team was hit hard by the loss of Captain Daniel Clark, who fouled out early in the 3rd quarter, and Stowe gradually let the game slip away. The talented Stowe team lost the match less on account of their own abilities, but more because of inexperience. Eton were well-drilled, and quicker to react at ball-ins, rebounds and other 50/50 situations. Doubtlessly, more matches as a team will bring out the best in these young Stowe basketballers. Kirk Blair, Arthur Hobhouse and Harry Warden all contributed solid efforts which showcased their potential; Man of the match was Daniel Baniukevic.

U15 Girls Cricket – Indoor County Tournament
The first ever girls cricket team competed for the first time on Friday in a U15 tournament. The Stoics played against teams with far more experience but managed to hold their own, earning recognition from the tournament director for their outstanding performance and improvement throughout the tournament. In their first match, the Stoics fought both nerves and the opposition's experience, losing 69-28. In their second game however, they improved dramatically, losing by only one run (55-54). They were less timid while batting and stepped up to make numerous catches in the outfield, most notably by Lydia North. In their third and final game, the Stoics continued to improve their game. Alice Hughes dominated the bowling, North and Charlie Lechmere led the outfield, and Maddie Wackett played extremely well as wicket keeper. Captain Honor Turner batted well and throughout the day showed exceptional leadership. Despite their incredible performance, the Stoics were not able to come away with a win in their final match. The final score was 49-46, against the team that ultimately came in first.
Player of the Match: Alice Hughes
Well done to all the teams who played on Friday 5 February and thanks to the PE Staff for making it all happen. If any of girls U13 - U17 are interested in playing, they should get in touch with Tina Turner. If any of your girls would like to play more cricket at club, district or even county level, I am happy to talk to them.

Sophie Rushton then scored on an assist from Laura Welford. Ellie Pinnock and Carla Springer each scored unassisted before Hattie Comyn made a brilliant shot on a feed from Hutt. The team play continued with a pass from Welford to Izzy Berner for yet another goal. Comyn, Welford, and Georgie Leech each contributed another goal before Comyn ended the game with a feed from Dale. The Stoics maintained possession for the majority of the game, only allowing 1 goal by Oakham.

Senior 1st XII v Wycombe Abbey School (A) Lost 6 - 8
The senior 1st lacrosse team played a highly intense and competitive match which stayed even throughout the match only to succumb 6-8. Wycombe Abbey had just beaten the reigning National Champions, Guildford High 6-5, the same day, so the Stoics are poised to challenge the best teams at National Schools in March. Danni Allard came high off the day, finishing with three goals, while Bryony Seekins, Zara Nichols, and Hetty Hill each scored one. Four of our goals were assisted as well: Hetty Hill with 2, and Danni Allard and Bryony Seekins each with 1. The match also demonstrated our end-to-end teamwork: Tash Trevor dominated the defence, Byrony Seekins controlled our centre draws, Zara Nichols performed beautifully on the transition wing, and Danni Allard and Julia Bevan the rest of the attack found the cracks in Wycombe Abbey's defence. Josephine Chung, goalie, finished the day with an impressive 5 saves as well.
2nd XII v Oakham (H) Won 9 – 3
The senior 2nd's played their first match of the term and the girls played amazingly well. The Stoics were led by Tavie de Ferranti who had 2 goals and 2 assists, as well as Lucy Beaty with 2 goals 2 assists as well. Other scorers were: Chess Hutt (1 goal), Charlotte Cook (1 goal, 1 assist), Lara de Keyser (2 goals), and Annabel Duthie (1 goal). The defence was led by Lily Wigan, Elly Parker, and Elle Melville. Great games as well from Pippa Farr, Imogen Voorspuy, Lottie Phillips, Rosie Hayward, and Harriet Goffman. The Star of the game had to be Kate Manser playing amazing in goal. Well done everybody.
Rowing (6 February 2010)
We had an excellent day on Saturday at the above event. We came equal 2nd with 'Windsor Boys School A' in the J16 Quads. This crew usually gain medals in the National Championships and have a reputation of supplying oarsmen to the Junior National Team!!! Technically they beat us by 0.1s over 3 miles on the Thames at Hampton. The crew that won unfortunately are our Local competition 'Star Club' in Bedford!

Yearlings A v Stamford (H) Won 7 – 5
Under pressure right from the word go Stowe defended their line admirably all afternoon. The much bigger Stamford side controlled much of the possession and territory. An early attack from Stamford looked destined for them to score in the corner but Harry Cornet intercepted and ran 70 metres to score which Drew Todd converted. A silly mistake let Stamford reply within minutes but they failed to kick the crucial conversion. For the remainder of the half, Stamford pressed for the winner but all of the 15 in blue and Gold tackled to the last, securing a memorable victory and a clean sweep for all 4 Yearlings teams.
U14B v Stamford (H) Won 26 – 12
From the outset, Stamford took the ball and control of the game and sent wave upon wave against the Stowe forwards and backs. Against the continued onslaught, Stowe hit every man but it was clear that this side were a well drilled and organised. After 5 minutes of such battering, Stamford was awarded a penalty and their largest, fastest forward took the ball on a charge. Up stepped Fergus Jones who hit him so hard that he threw the ball 10 metre forward. Suddenly Stowe realised that they could overpower this fearsome side and began to pile the pressure on. A break by Kinahan put us in their half and the forwards combined strength drove us to their line before Pettifer picked up and scored an unconverted try. Stowe continued to stand up to Stamford who cracked by kicking the ball to Ali who did not need asking twice. Actually he did because after he scored his first try, they asked to do it again – so he scored his second. Half time saw the scoreboard sitting happy at 19 – 0 after Fountaine had converted one of the tries.
The second half was still difficult, Burke was running and the forwards drove repeated waves back as Stamford tried to regain some control. Eventually they scored a converted try but then Stowe were right back in their faces until a loose pass from Stamford found Kinahan who score under the posts. A final score by Stamford meant the final score was 26 – 12. This was the first display were all players stood up to be counted and all should be pleased with their efforts. Once again Hiley had an excellent match and newcomers Barnes, Ulmann and Pultr all made their mark. Man of the match must go the man who showed the team the meaning of a hard tackle – Fergus Jones.
Tries: Pettifer, Ali (2), Kinahan, Conversions: Burke, Fountaine (2), Man of the match: Jones
Yearlings C XI v Stamford (A) Won 36 – 0
I am pleased to report a cracking win for the C's against Stamford, 36-0. Tries were scored by; Joshua Macmillan -2, Toby Wightman, Montgomery Owen, Archie Grossart and Nick Whitmore. There were three good conversions by Ed Selby-Lowndes. The most hardworking player was Archie Grossart. We rucked and ran well with a good improvement from last week.
Yearlings D XV v Stamford (H) Won 46 – 0
Stowe's Yearling D team put together an even more impressive performance this week by beating Stamford D team by 46 points to nothing. Stowe dominated the possession the entire game and it was basic handling errors which let the visitors off on a number of occasions in the opening half. Stowe’s forwards were aggressive and dominant as they crushed the opposition in the rucks and mauls, earning countless turnovers. Felix Grant-Rennick had an outstanding game at hooker as he poached many balls from the opposition. Arthur Newman was fantastic in defence as was the whole team as they never allowed the visitors to gain an inch. The second was the backs turn to show some class and pace with the ball being distributed down the hands on a number of occasions to our fast winger Jack Walker-Payne who crossed the try line. Overall an emphatic victory by Stowe.
