Match Reports
1st XI v Trinity College (H) won by 20 runs
The 1st XI won both matches this week after a solid draw against Uppingham on Saturday. Stowe set Trinity College 173 in 35 overs, thanks to a fifty from
Platts-Martin and useful contributions from Trotter (20), Richardson (25) and Gurney (23). Josh Sainsbury-Bow then got a wicket in the first over and Stowe immediately applied the pressure with 4th former Ben Paine supporting Bow from the other end. However, the second wicket partnership proved a thorn in the team’s side until Gurney struck in the thirteenth over. Ben Curley bowled full and straight on a pitch that was starting to keep low and the asking rate kept creeping up leaving Stowe to win by 20 runs.
1st XI v Cokethorpe (A) won by 8 wickets
Wednesday against Cokethorpe was much straight forward as Cokethorpe were dismissed for 82. Harry Martin (3rd form) on debut took 3 wickets and Will Scholfield also took three with his off-spin. Stowe only lost two wickets in reply with Archie Hood the pick of the batters, 40 not out.
YA XI v Oakham (A) Won by 33 runs
Yearling A 217 for 7 (Olley 140, Gough 43)
Oakham 184 All Out (Consett 3-20, White 3-12)
A very workman like performance from Stowe. After a few early wickets, Olley and Gough put on 180 for the 3rd wicket. It was Olley's second century of the week and it was a destructive performance on a two paced wicket. The rain came down at the beginning of the Oakham innings and this made handling the ball difficult. A very good Oakham partnership kept them in the hunt but as soon as the rain stopped, Consett and White took three wickets each to give Stowe the game. It was the Yearling A teams eleventh win of the season and they play in the final of the County Cup on Thursday 25 June.
YC v Oakham (H) Won by 64 runs
The YC team go out with a bang and a resounding win against Oakham C team. Stowe won the toss (at last!) and elected to bat. The batting performance was shaky, but strong stands from Drax (29), Captain Seb Young (19) and Roland Parker (14) were enough to ensure a respectable score of 120... all out of course. It all was down to how well Stowe fielded and with the Lions test well and truly out the window, the Stowe team decided we may as well win this one. The openers came onto the scene, with a whole fielding attack full of enthusiasm, energy and witty catchphrases - Roland Parker takes the award for best one liner. Ed Howes bowled well along with other wicket takers Seb Clarke and Will Hawke but it was James Drax that defined the game. In his second over he stormed into the game with an early LBW decision. The next batsman was sent packing straight away but there was a hatrick ball for Drax. Captain Young brings in the field for Drax's hatrick ball; he runs in, the ball pitches slightly short but has plenty of pace. The Batsman takes a wild swing. The ball crashes into the wickets and the bales are flying again, hatrick for Drax! Drax went on to take 7 wickets in total, including another hatrick ball in his 4th over, which this time was not converted. Still, with figures of 7 wickets for 10 runs off 4 overs Drax takes home man of the match award as Stowe bowled out Oakham for 56 runs. Great finish to the season well done everyone.
JCC v Oakham (H) Won by 118 runs
The JCC produced an excellent performance on Saturday to convincingly beat Oakham. Stowe won the toss and opted to bat first a steady opening from Kit Dixon-Smith was followed by some abrasive middle order batting from Charlie Winton and the captain Tom Bayliss who scored 70 and 50 respectively. Stowe posted an excellent total of 218 for 8 after their 30 overs. After tea Stowe went into field and it soon became clear that Stowe's bowling seemed to have the upper hand, in particular Orlando Bevan stood out with figures of 4 for 14 as did Henry Stockdale who got 3 for 11. Oakham were eventually all bowled out for 100 in the 27th over leaving Stowe convincing victors.'
2nd XI v Oakham (H) Lost by 8 wickets
Stowe won the toss and batted on the North Front, but was soon under pressure from some accurate bowling and quickly slipped to 12 for 4 with only captain Craig Browne offering resistance. However, Henry Longton and Craig dug in for a good 50 run partnership to get the innings under way. Following their dismissals, Josh Sainsbury-Bow hit powerfully on his way to an impressive 70 not out as the innings was eventually declared on 157 for 9. Stowe needed to extract the Oakham top order early to have a chance of bowling them out, but despite bowling and fielding reasonably well, wickets did not come and with one of the openers and number 3 both getting 50’s, Oakham managed to knock of the runs for the loss of two wickets.
