Squash
Squash is a main sport in the Spring term and Stoics who are selected to play in the Senior squad have up to two hours of expert coaching per week with a fully qualified level 2 England coach. Squash is a growing sport at Stowe both for the competitive athlete as well as those pupils who play on a recreational basis.
The squash calendar begins with pre-season training on a Friday afternoon in the Michaelmas term with our resident and visiting coach (both level 2 England Squash coaches). All players (junior and senior) may trial for and train with the squad during the winter. Alongside the performance teams, the squash courts are busy with the more recreational side of the game.
The squash season takes place in the Lent term. Formal team training takes place on Fridays, but it is expected that team players will have at least one other afternoon squash activity. Recreational squash is still encouraged in the Lent term, but the demand on the courts is higher as matches take up Tuesday and Thursday sessions. The senior team plays between 8 and 10 fixtures in a season, and Stowe has more recently been able to field a junior side as well. Last season, the junior side played 3 matches, although some of the players were called up to play in an expanded senior side against some of our bigger rival schools.
Squash is usually taken up by more senior Stoics as an alternative to the major sports, but all years can play in the teams as long as sufficient arrangement is made with any bigger team sports. Stowe was proud to field a mixed junior team (boys and girls) last season, and interest in squash from the girls increases each year.
Individual coaching is available by arrangement at no extra cost.
