Rugby

Rugby is the performance sport in the Autumn term. Stowe currently field 5 senior teams, 3 U16 teams and 3 U15 teams on Saturdays against schools that can field the equivalent.

The 1st XV, 2nd XV, U16A and U15A are regarded as the performance teams where their success is closely monitored and targets set. All other teams are participation where the objective is to encourage boys to play for enjoyment and team ethos thus underpinning the performance sides.

Stowe enters both the Daily Mail U18 and U15 National knockout competitions and have reached Twickenham at U18 level. In 2010 Stowe reached the Semi Final and in 2011, the last 16 of this national tournament. Stowe supports individuals who seek representative honours and are proud of the recent track record at County, Divisional and National level.

In the Lent term attention turns to the U14 age group, where Stowe fields 4 teams, the Development XV, for boys in the Fifth Form upwards who want to continue playing rugby and very strong 7-a-side squads. Coaching is provided by dedicated staff who have County and Divisional experience and are headed up by the rugby professional, Alan Hughes, who has many years of International age group coaching.

Rugby Leagues

These take place every week with all boys' Houses participating in a 10 players per team League competition. This involves each House playing each other once. Points are awarded for winning and the top team in the League at the end of term receives a trophy.

The Ethos of the competition:
To provide a competitive opportunity for boys to play rugby and represent their House team when School team players are not involved.

Aims of the League:

To provide appropriate opportunities for more boys to play rugby regularly in the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Forms so that fitness and skills are maintained. When these boys are in the Sixth Form more boys therefore will be available to represent the School in the 4th XV and 5th XV teams.

To provide an appropriate physical exercise opportunity for boys in the middle school.
