Hockey

Hockey at Stowe is played in both the Autumn and Spring terms. The Autumn term is mainly the preserve of the girls and the Yearlings. Stowe runs eight girls' sides and five Yearlings' sides, allowing each Stoic to have an introduction to hockey and for us to assess their performance level. The Senior boys train indoor and outdoor during the Autumn term which enables the boys who do not play rugby to work on their hockey skills. During the Spring term, hockey is the major Senior boys' sport and we currently have three Senior teams, two Colts teams and four Junior Colts teams.

The fixture list is strong and we have block fixtures on Saturday’s against local rivals such as Uppingham and Oundle. During the week our fixtures are closer to home, which keeps traveling time to a minimum, but we are able to maintain the quality of opposition as St. Edwards and Abingdon are nearby. One of the favourite matches of each year is the Leavers' Match where we play against staff and current England and Great Britain Hockey International players.

In recent years the boys and girls' teams have gone from strength to strength and both the U14 and U16 teams have qualified for the Regional finals. There have been a number of players who have played at County and Regional level and Abby Webb (Old Stoic) represented England U18s girls at the European Cup. Our U14 boys have represented the County at Regional level and the Senior teams have made the County finals. We currently have five boys and girls in Regional squads.

A number of our coaching staff have played National League hockey which is the highest domestic level hockey in the Country. Will Hearne who coaches at Stowe played for England U21. All the performance teams benefit from having two coaches who work with each squad to maximise their development.

Master in charge: Mr James Fair
James is the current England and Great Britain goalkeeper and has 104 International caps.
