History of Stanhope House
Stanhope - named after Lady Hester Stanhope, Great Grand Daughter of the builder of Stowe House, Sir Richard Temple, the 3rd Baronet, as well as the niece of one of our great Prime Ministers, Sir William Pitt, the Younger. The Stanhope family were closely linked with the Temple - Grenville family, once owners of Stowe.
Stanhope was the first girl's (day) House at Stowe. The first five girls to join the Sixth Form arrived in 1974 and by 1976 there were enough to form a House. They originally lived in the Stanhope building which now contains the Careers, International and Skills Development Departments and is currently being used whilst we await the opening of the new Stanhope House. Although the numbers of girls increased in 1993, necessitating the move to Lyttelton, the Stanhope name has been revived for the new, state of the art Boarding House that opened in January 2009.
