Judy Gracie - Housemistress

Judy grew up in Zimbabwe before pursuing a research career in medical microbiology in Cape Town. On arriving in Buckingham she heard about Stowe and started as a biology technician in 1990 with three young children. As the children grew up Judy started teaching and recently completed a PGCE. Her role as housemistress is new but she enjoys it immensely. Her son, an old Stoic, is now at Loughborough University and she has two daughters still at home. Judy is keen on all kinds of music, the outdoors and sport, reads a wide range of books and enjoys the cinema and theatre.

Olive Pohlmann - Matron

Sarah Ross - Under-Housemistress & 3rd Form Tutor

Sarah joined Stowe's Religious Studies Department in September 2007 and spent her first year as 6th Form Tutor in Nugent. She moved to Lyttelton as the girls' Under-Housemistress in 2008.

Carol Miller - 4th Form Tutor

Carol was born Northern Ireland by the Giants Causeway. She studied English and Politics at Queens University Belfast and followed this with a Library Diploma. She was hugely committed to drama in the Belfast street theatre on the Falls and Shankill Roads, she worked for the Belfast Festival "doing" wardrobe mistress, make up, etc. for endless student productions, meeting her future husband doing late night revue! After qualifying as a Librarian Carol worked in a school on Shankill Road, then moved to a school in Devon, got married and moved to Worth School where she stayed for the next 23 years as Librarian, House Tutor and Boarding House Deputy. She also ran a school wide scheme to encourage independent learning. Her interests include cooking and travel. As well as Librarian at Stowe, Carol has been 3rd Form Tutor for Temple and now moves to Chatham in 2008. She is married to Dr Paul Miller, Head of English at Stowe.

Kim McMahon - 5th Form Tutor

Kim teaches Chemistry at Stowe. Kim taught in a number of schools in both Australia and New Zealand, day and boarding, mixed and girls only, before coming to Stowe in 1998. She started as 3rd Form Tutor for Walpole House, then moved to Lyttelton when Stowe became fully co-educational. Kim is a 5th Form Tutor. She says she loves every minute of being part of a girls House, especially with the complete age range that the House now has, from 3rd Form to Upper Sixth.

Simon Gabbatiss - 6th Form Tutor

Simon became Head of Teaching ICT in September 2008. His previous position involved teaching and mentoring 6th Form students, so he is delighted to be working with a 6th Form group here at Stowe. Simon began teaching in 2002 after a career change having previously worked in the IT sector of the Printing and Graphic Arts industry. This background has been very useful when discussing "real life" scenarios with Stoics. Simon is married to Kathryn, and has a son, Josh, who has just completed his GCSEs. He enjoys most sport, and after retiring from competitive distance running, now cycles and plays golf.

Mandy Dawson - 6th Form Tutor

Mandy, Geography teacher at Stowe, is married to Mike who teaches Maths at Stowe. Mandy is also the mother of Charlie Barker, Under-Housemaster in Bruce. Her other son Lewis has just left university. In her spare time Mandy endeavours to maintain her fitness, mainly in the gym in the winter, but in summer also enjoys mountain biking and windsurfing. Mandy has published a number of Geography A level textbooks, most recently in May 2008 with another A2 textbook scheduled for 2009, and she is a Principal Examiner in Geography at A level for AQA.

History of Stanhope (Lyttelton) House - our very first Girl's House

Stanhope - Named after Lady Hester Stanhope, niece of Pitt the Younger, this was the first girls' House. The first five girls to join the Stowe 6th Form arrived in 1974 and there were enough to form a House by 1976. As the numbers increased, a second House, Nugent, was formed in 1985 in what had been the boys waiting House. Further increases necessitated moving the girls of Stanhope into Lyttelton in 1993, which had until then been a boys' House. It was decided to keep the name of Lyttelton and no longer use Stanhope as a House name. The refurbished Stanhope building became a 'waiting House' in 2007 while our new girls' accommodation was built and the name will move to the second new girls' House when it formally opens in January 2009.

History of Lyttelton House

Lyttelton - Viscount Cobham's youngest sister, Christian, married Sir Thomas Lyttelton, founding a dynasty which has remained prominent to this day. The Cobham viscountcy is held by one member of the family following the 'special remainder' of 1718 which came into effect on the 3rd Duke's death in 1889. In 1954 a new title of Viscount Chandos was conferred on another member of the family, who presented the prizes at the 1960 and 1965 Speech Days, laying the foundation stone of Lyttelton House at the latter. He also gave his name to the Lyttelton stage of the English National Theatre.
