Judy Gracie - Housemistress

Judy grew up in Zimbabwe before pursuing a research career in medical microbiology in Cape Town. On arriving in Buckingham she heard about Stowe and started as a biology technician in 1990 with three young children. Judy completed her PGCE at Stowe and starting teaching before assuming the role of House Mistress in 2004. She has a son, an Old Stoic, who is now a married geography teacher himself, a daughter Helen who read law and works in London and a daughter, Caitlin, also an Old Stoic at Lincoln College Oxford. Judy is keen on all kinds of music, the outdoors and sport, reads a wide range of books and enjoys the cinema and theatre.

Olive Pohlmann - Matron

Olive was born in Dublin, Ireland but spent most of her life in South Africa where she attended boarding school for her high school years. She qualified and worked as a radiographer, but has also worked as a dental nurse, secretary, life skills teacher, remedial teacher and minister’s wife. She has two daughters in South Africa. She regards living in Lyttelton and taking care of the girls a great privilege.

Eleanor Donaldson - Under Housemistress and Third Form Tutor

Eleanor studied History of Art at York University. She particularly loves teaching History of Art/Visual Education here at Stowe because it is a place of such great beauty with so much history. Eleanor is also Chaplains Assistant and is involved in running Crossfire, Bible studies, Duke of Edinburgh, Netball and Rowing. When she has any spare time, Eleanor enjoys playing tennis, coxing (the person who shouts in the boat!), theatre and travelling.

Philippa Gleave - Assistant Housemistress and Fifth Form Tutor

Philippa studied at Leeds University and joined Stowe this year after completing a PGCE in London. In addition to teaching Biology she is a keen rowing coach. She is also an avid traveller favouring places where she can scuba dive or ski.

Kim McMahon - Fourth Form Tutor

Kim teaches Chemistry at Stowe. Kim taught in a number of schools in both Australia and New Zealand, day and boarding, mixed and girls only, before coming to Stowe in 1998. She started as Third Form Tutor for Walpole House, then moved to Lyttelton when Stowe became fully co-educational. Kim is a Fourth Form Tutor. She says she loves every minute of being part of a girls House, especially with the complete age range that the House now has, from Third Form to Upper Sixth Form.

History of Stanhope (Lyttelton) House - our very first Girl's House

Stanhope - Named after Lady Hester Stanhope, niece of Pitt the Younger, this was the first girls' House. The first five girls to join the Stowe Sixth Form arrived in 1974 and there were enough to form a House by 1976. As the numbers increased, a second House, Nugent, was formed in 1985 in what had been the boys waiting House. Further increases necessitated moving the girls of Stanhope into Lyttelton in 1993, which had until then been a boys' House. It was decided to keep the name of Lyttelton and no longer use Stanhope as a House name. The refurbished Stanhope building became a 'waiting House' in 2007 while our new girls' accommodation was built and the name will move to the second new girls' House when it formally opens in January 2009.

History of Lyttelton House

Lyttelton - Viscount Cobham's youngest sister, Christian, married Sir Thomas Lyttelton, founding a dynasty which has remained prominent to this day. The Cobham viscountcy is held by one member of the family following the 'special remainder' of 1718 which came into effect on the 3rd Duke's death in 1889. In 1954 a new title of Viscount Chandos was conferred on another member of the family, who presented the prizes at the 1960 and 1965 Speech Days, laying the foundation stone of Lyttelton House at the latter. He also gave his name to the Lyttelton stage of the English National Theatre.
