History of Chatham
Built in 1925 and designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, Chatham was the first purpose built boarding House at Stowe and was named after William Pitt the Elder. Earl Temple's sister married William Pitt the Elder, who was Prime Minister for much of the time between 1756 and 1768. He became the Earl of Chatham and their second son, William Pitt the Younger, became one of Britain's greatest Prime Ministers, leading the country in the early part of the Napoleonic Wars and playing a major part in the creation of the British Empire.
Chatham House's motto is Benigno Numine which means 'With kindly power.'
