Barney Durrant - Housemaster

Educated at Kelly College, Tavistock and University College, London, Barney has a PGCE from Cambridge where he was awarded a Blue for hammer throwing. He came to Stowe in 1998, from Sedbergh, taking up the post of Geography teacher and Under-Housemaster in Temple, becoming Head of Geography in 2002.

Barney spent his early life in less economically developed countries as his father worked for the Commonwealth Development Corporation - which nurtured his geographical interests. Barney played rugby for Rosslyn Park and South East of England until a knee injury forced him into early retirement. He then coached rugby and athletics to regional level and is currently competing in triathlons. His wife, Charlotte, is a primary school teacher but is currently looking after William, Freddie and Alexa, their three young children.

Clare Hill-Hall - Matron

Clare joined Chandos House in September 2003, having lived in France for the previous nine years, so speaks French proficiently. Privately educated in England, Clare went to finishing School and then travelled extensively, working for British Airways, the racing and Equestrian professions. She has a wide variety of interests, diving, sport music drama and art. Clare has two sons, her eldest was at Stowe School in Walpole House, they both now live and work in London, and are a very close family. Having an open door policy in house for medical pastoral care Clare is always available for the boys. She very much enjoys the extended family life in Chandos and considers herself fortunate to be a member of the Chapel Choir. As an outside interest, Clare is on the Board of Trustees of the Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice, Oxford, and has been for over 17 years.

Gabrielle Peel - Under Housemistress and Fifth Form Tutor

I am the Under Housemistress in Chandos this year. This is my second year working at Stowe, before that I was studying for my BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Northumbria University. I am an art teacher and hockey coach, as well as my Under Housemistress role in Chandos. I am a keen supporter of all the arts, last year I directed a house play and I also still play two instruments and sing. I help with life drawing sessions in the Art School and I tutor the Fifth Form in Chandos.

Brian Hart - Third Form Tutor

Prior to Stowe, Brian has had a diverse career in the electronics and telecommunications industry. He travelled worldwide to support the “Wheelbarrow” bomb disposal robot, delivering training courses to military personnel. It was this training that made Brian want to become a teacher and taught briefly at Bilton Grange Preparatory school. In 2009, he took time to study for a PGCE and now works in the Science Department, teaching both physics and chemistry. He is also a keen singer, having spent over twenty five years as a member of Coventry Cathedral Choir, and when Brian isn’t teaching, coaching the 3rd XV rugby team, or tutoring the Third Form in Chandos, he returns home to more students at Tudor Hall....where his wife is a Housemistress!

Miles Nottage - Non Resident Tutor
After leaving Stowe in 1990, I immediately began work as a gigging musician, with various bands and as a soloist. I moved to London in 1997 and took several residencies as a Pianist, including Quaglino's and The London Landmark Hotel. I turned my attention to teaching Piano in private practice shortly thereafter which ignited a passionate interest in music education. I recently completed a diploma in Jazz Piano with the London College of Music (dipLCM) and was delighted to take my position as Academic Music Trainee at Stowe. I am married to Angela, a senior NHS manager and former district nurse and we have two boys (called William and Freddie!) I am loving my (second) time at Stowe, be it in the classroom, in Piano lessons or doing my weekly night in Chandos.

History of Chandos House

The family name became Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville! A new title of Viscount Chandos was bestowed on a member of the Lyttelton family in 1954 and he presented the prizes at the 1960 and 1965 Speech Days.
