Weekend

The Weekend & Extra-Curricular Activities

One of the most valued advantages enjoyed by pupils at a boarding school is the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. There are few who have been through Stowe whose interests have not been aroused by one or a number of the activities on offer. Thereafter the pursuit of excellence takes over which, with the consequent rise in confidence, has the inevitable, beneficial effect on a Stoic’s overall progress and achievements. We encourage our young people to participate in a new activity each term during their early years at Stowe, to try something out that they would not normally consider.

Our pupils work hard during the week and we recognise the need for down-time, for a little rest and relaxation. So in addition to the expected sports fixtures there is something extra on offer each weekend, ranging from a shopping trip, film showings in our own Roxburgh Hall (we have a school licence to show current box office films), discos, theatre visits, inter-House challenges, through to trips to the Xscape snowdome and paint balling.

Weekend Calendar

Each term a Weekend Calendar is published, bringing together all the social and sports events happening throughout the term. A copy is given to every Stoic and they are encouraged to get involved and have a go. There are House times and free time after prep for socializing across the Houses. Throughout the year House and inter-House events and competitions are held in the evenings and weekend.

The Stowe Festival

In addition, we have an annual Stowe Festival, now in its 4th year, which provides a busy programme of workshops, masterclasses and performances over four days, just prior to half term. This started as an Arts Festival but has been so popular that it has grown each year and in 2008 it became a fully fledged ‘Stowe Festival’ with a wider range of events covering art, dance, drama, music, science, sports and much more to both challenge and stimulate. These range from hip hop, street dance, Stomp workshops through to magic tricks, seminars and theatre productions.

Sixth Form Centre

On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings, Sixth Formers can socialise in the Sixth Form Centre, while the Sixth Form Club provides a second supervised environment for the Upper Sixth. It is a cornerstone of Stowe's educational philosophy that boys and girls should know how to behave as young adults before they arrive at university.

To look at the full range of activities and sport available on a regular weekly basis, please visit Activities & Societies and Sport. No Stoic can ever complain of being bored or having nothing to do!
