1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos

(1776 - 1839)

Inheriting the title of Chandos from his wife, Anna Eliza Brydges, the Duke made very few structural changes to the House and Gardens, but indulged in his love of furniture and paintings. This his did, with his wife's inheritance, not only at Stowe but at the four other properties he'd inherited. By 1827 he was forced to live abroad to reduce his living costs. However, with his heavily protected yacht, the Anna Eliza, and his passion for antiquities and financing archaeological excavations, his enforced Grand Tour resulted in even larger debts and by 1833, sales of his possessions were underway.
