LOCAL RULES
(Winter/Temporary Local Rules – See Notice Boards)

1) OUT OF BOUNDS (Rule 27) Beyond any fence or hedge bounding the course:

i) 2nd/11th holes. To the left of the line of white posts from the fence by
the Cedar tree, past the Greenkeeper’s hut and then past the trunk of the tree nearest the green to the fence in front of Chatham House; also beyond the fence in front of Chatham House.

ii) 4th/13th holes. To the left of a line from the right hand edge of the sign at the Headmaster’s hedge to the greenside corner of the ‘Grotto’ wall and from there as in iii) below. The adjacent shrubbery on the course is Ground under Repair.

iii) 5th/14th holes. To the left of a line from the greenside corner of the ‘Grotto’ wall through the white posts and the row of trees about 40 yards from the bunker and continuing infinitely past the left hand corner of the plinth of the statue.

iv) 6th/15th holes. To the left of the line of white posts left of the fairway and ending past the large tree by the green; also on and across the lakeside roadway.

v) 7th/16th holes. To the left of the line of any white posts in or adjacent to the copse to the left of the fairway.

vi) 8th/17th holes. To the left of the National Trust boundary posts.

2) WATER HAZARDS (Rule 26). The ditches from the 4th/13th rough to the bridge and from the bridge to the course boundary of the 8th/17th hole are separate water hazards marked by yellow posts. The bridge is an integral part of the course.

3) IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS (Rule 24-2): these include: artificial paths and steps (but see 2 above), the two pumping stations and related machinery and equipment near the 3rd/12th green, tee and distance markers, course information signs, drainage covers, sprinkler heads, fixed mesh in bunkers and any monument on the course.

4) GROUND UNDER REPAIR - Play is prohibited from any area so marked. Relief must be taken as provided by Rule 25-1.

5) STONES IN BUNKERS are movable obstructions (Rule 24-1). PENALTY for any breach of these Local Rules (unless already covered by a Rule of Golf):
Stroke Play - Two Strokes; Match Play - Loss of Hole.

SAFETY

  • 1) Be alert to the presence of National Trust visitors who may not always be aware that they are at risk.
  • 2) Give way to Greens Staff until it is safe to play.
  • 3) At the 5th/14th tee give way to players on, playing towards or leaving the 7th/16th green (but see 4 below).
  • 4) On playing towards the 7th green, if your ball is beyond the right hand edge of the 7th fairway, give way to players on the 5th/14th tee.

ETIQUETTE (See also the Rules of Golf)

  • 1) Please call through the following match if you have lost a clear hole on the group in front.
  • 2) Please replace divots and repair all pitch marks on the greens.
  • 3) Club, Seniors’ and Ladies’ Matches and Competitions and other official Fixtures played from the white or red tees have priority over other golf which must be played from the yellow tees.
  • 4) Ladies have priority on the Course on Tuesdays and the 1st Tee is closed to other golfers from 8.30am to 9.30am during British Summer Time and from 9.00am to 10.00am when GMT applies.
  • 5) When starting at the first tee allow players who have reached the 9th green to putt out and play the 10th hole. You may then start ahead of the next group unless 3) above applies.
  • 6) At the 5th/14th green call up the group behind you if they are at the tee before you start putting. Mark and lift any balls that are on the green.
