Science at Stowe

Science is taught at Stowe by subject specialists in well-equipped, modern laboratories. There is a full back-up team of technicians and laboratory assistants and a great deal of emphasis is placed on practical work. There is a dedicated science ICT lab, a full class suite of laptops and data loggers and all teaching labs are networked and have 'smart boards.'

All Stoics will continue to study three sciences, i.e. a balanced science course, through to GCSE. With recent timetable changes it is envisaged that many will study three separate sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics) on four 40 minute periods per week, per subject, taking three separate GCSE exams at the end of Fifth Form. This is certainly the route for all who may eventually study any science at AS level and for those who will eventually apply to more competitive universities.

A co-ordinated science course (dual award) will also be offered, based on three 40 minute periods per week, per subject and this will lead to two GCSEs being awarded (science and additional science). This syllabus will be offered at two levels; Higher (A* - D) and Foundation (C - G). The syllabus material in co-ordinated science will be core material from each of the separate science subjects.

Coursework makes up 25% of the marks in separate and co-ordinated sciences and is assessed by practical work and externally set written exercises.
We follow AQA science syllabuses and access to all science AS levels is available from the separate sciences or co-ordinated science on the basis of grade B or better, although as stated above, we expect the majority of potential AS scientists to take three separate GCSE sciences.
