Welcome to Stowe Our vision for Stowe, a co-educational independent boarding and day school in the heart of the English countryside, is of a school that delivers the highest academic and cultural achievement; and a school that continues to foster the development of Stoics who are as original and individual as their school. Stowe can and should lay claim to being one of the country's great schools. We take inspiration from our remarkable founder, JF Roxburgh who gave us a truly distinctive ethos to which we stay resolutely true: Stowe celebrates youth rather than stifles it, nurtures individuals rather than conformists, and it inculcates the notion of what it is to be a civilized being. A school of unsurpassed beauty, it embodies the ideals of the English Enlightenment. It is justifiably acclaimed for its tolerance of diversity and commitment to the pursuit of intellectual, cultural and sporting excellence. At Stowe we pride ourselves on the friendly and supportive environment that is one of Stowe's distinguishing characteristics. Confidence and tolerance of others flourish in a close community. Our family atmosphere and Christian ethos encourages pupils to develop a lasting sense of moral, social and spiritual responsibility, and our House system provides a caring environment in which pupils learn to consider the rights and needs of others. With our strong emphasis on pastoral care we can extend the ideal of the family into education. We continue to work towards ensuring that Stowe fulfils our high expectations. The expansion of co-education throughout the School will enable us to become one of the finest co-educational boarding schools in the country. There has been a significant emphasis placed on improving academic standards and intellectual rigour throughout the School and I am delighted to report that we are now managing waiting lists for places. Three centuries after Stowe House was first built, and just over eighty years since the great JF Roxburgh, our founding Headmaster, welcomed the first 99 into the School, Stowe is in remarkably good heart. The main School building, once the mansion of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, is set in 750 acres of historically significant landscaped gardens and parkland. This setting, steeped in the splendour and heritage of its unparalleled location, provides Stowe with a unique educational environment and atmosphere. We hope you will come to Stowe.
