General Information about Stowe School Stowe is a boarding and day school and all staff are required to undertake the professional roles and duties which the boarding environment demands and to contribute fully to the life of the community. Teachers at Stowe are deeply committed to the social and moral welfare of pupils; all have specific tutorial responsibilities and involvement in the boarding Houses. Stowe is an independent school of about 500 boys and 120 girls and became fully co-educational in September 2005 admitting girls in the Third Form (Year 9), having taken girls into the Sixth Form since 1974. There are presently eight boys' boarding Houses and two girls' Houses with a third girls’ House due to open in September 2007 and a fourth to follow in due course. Stowe became a school in 1923, having previously been the seat of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos. Its magnificent grounds of 750 acres were landscaped significantly by Bridgeman, Kent and Capability Brown, while the architects for the House and the many surviving temples include Vanbrugh, Gibbs and Adam. In 1989 the grounds were gifted over to the National Trust with a full lease back for 125 years. The School has excellent academic and extramural facilities. In addition to many cricket, rugby and hockey pitches, there are tennis courts, squash courts, fives courts, an athletics track and a nine-hole golf course, a heated swimming pool, a sports hall and an all-weather playing surface. The Roxburgh Hall is the venue for large-scale dramatic and musical productions. The School has a strong CCF contingent, a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and a Community Service programme which operates locally on a regular basis. The School has its own salary scale, which compares favourably with national scales. Stowe School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Criminal Records Bureau.
