Corkscrew Society
Corkscrew is a Society exclusively for the Upper 6th, with Stoics invited to apply for a limited membership of just 24 places. Corkscrew provides an opportunity to learn about wine - how to taste it, how to begin to distinguish one wine from another, how to choose the right wine for the occasion, and how to enjoy it. The aim is to learn, but without becoming too serious.
There are normally six sessions held during the course of the year - starting with the all-important 'Introduction to Wine-tasting'. Thereafter, we might choose to focus on a specific region, or a particular grape. Visiting speakers come in - quite often Old Stoics or parents involved in the wine trade, or representatives from local and national wine merchants. Last year's high point was certainly a trip to the cellars of Waddesdon Manor and a tasting of the Rothschild family's wines - a rare and wonderful privilege indeed!
