Chatham House Staff

John Ing - Housemaster
John joined Stowe in 2006, is married to Jude and has two young children, Lucy and George. John is a physicist who has taught at Harrow for twenty years, where he helped to run the Headmaster's House, coached the 1st XV rugby side, commanded the Harrow CCF and ran leadership/team building courses for the school prefects. John is currently the Commanding Officer of the Royal Marines Reserve at Henley, having previously served as a full-time Royal Marines Officer and then as a troop commander in the Special Boat Service.

Tally Kettler - Matron
Tally has worked at Stowe for many years and has three grown-up sons of her own. Before joining Stowe, Tally was an ophthalmic nurse with experience of general nursing and deals with the boys in a very caring but no-nonsense manner.

Edward Surrey - Under-Housemaster & 4th Form Tutor
After being educated in his hometown of Sevenoaks, Ed went to Exeter University. There, as at school, he sailed competitively both at home and internationally, but has since spent most of his spare time surfing rather than sailing. After University Ed worked for two years for a large Church teaching the Bible. On completing his PGCE at Exeter he says he made the best decision of his life - he married Sally.  Ed then moved into Chatham House to teach Maths, while Sally teaches PE at a local prep school.

Roderick Tait - 3rd Form Tutor
Rod joined Stowe from Rugby School in 2005 with his wife Alison and their two year old son, George. After gaining his astrophysics degree Rod held a commission in the Royal Marines and then worked in the City's capital markets and also gained an MBA at City University. His interests include Eton Fives, mountain-walking, golf and astronomy. When he is not in the House Rod enjoys supporting the local church with his family.

Debbie Arscott - 5th Form Tutor
We welcomed Debbie to Chatham in 2006. Becoming a full time member of staff, Debbie takes on responsibilities as a 5th Form Tutor as well as some EAL teaching.

Steve Malling - 6th Form Tutor
Steve is Head of Physics, who joined Stowe in 1995, and is a 6th Form Tutor. He also runs the Army section in the CCF. He enjoys outdoor activities and is an expert with computers. Steve has two teenage children. w

Brian Johnson - Attache

He is naturally enthusiastic about the burgeoning artistic talent at Stowe and enjoys his work as a 6th Form Tutor for Chatham. He is married to Janet and has a young daughter and son.

Crispin Robinson - Attache
Crispin was Stowe's Head of History of Art, before becoming Deputy Head (Academic) in September 2007. An Oxford graduate with an MPhil from the Courtauld Institute, he is a 6th Form Tutor and, to our delight, is attached to duty in Chatham. He enjoys galleries, travel, reading and music.

History of Chatham

Built in 1925 and designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, Chatham was the first purpose built boarding House at Stowe and was names after William Pitt the Elder. Earl Temple's sister married William Pitt the Elder, who was Prime Minister for much of the time between 1756 and 1768. He became the Earl of Chatham and their second son, William Pitt the Younger, became one of Britain's greatest Prime Ministers, leading the country in the early part of the Napoleonic Wars and playing a major part in the creation of the British Empire.
Chatham House's motto is Benigno Numine which means 'With kindly power.'
