Chandos House Staff Barney Durrant - Housemaster Educated at Kelly College, Tavistock and University College, London, Barney has a PGCE from Cambridge where he was awarded a Blue for hammer throwing. He came to Stowe in 1998, from Sedbergh, taking up the post of Geography teacher and Under-Housemaster in Temple, becoming Head of Geography in 2002. Barney spent his early life in less economically developed countries as his father worked for the Commonwealth Development Corporation - which nurtured his geographical interests. Barney played rugby for Rosslyn Park and South East of England until a knee injury stopped this then he coached rugby and athletics to regional level. He currently coaches the 1st XV. His wife, Charlotte, was recently Head of Year Two at Chandlings Manor, pre-prep school to Cothill, but is currently looking after their young son, William.
Clare Hill-Hall - Matron Clare joined Chandos House in September 2003, having lived in France for the previous nine years, so speaks French proficiently Privately educated in England, Clare went to finishing School and then travelled extensively, working for British Airways, the racing and Equestrian professions. She has a wide variety of interests, diving, sport music drama and art. Clare has two sons, her eldest was at Stowe School in Walpole House, they both now live and work in London, and are a very close family. Having an open door policy in house for medical pastoral care Clare is always available for the boys. She very much enjoys the extended family life in Chandos and considers herself fortunate to be a member of the Chapel Choir. As an outside interest, Clare is on the Board of Trustees of the Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice, Oxford, and has been for over 17 years.
Matthew Walsh-Woolcott - Under Housemaster & 4th Form Tutor Matt joined Stowe in January 2007 as our on-site hockey professional, then took on his role as Under Housemaster and 4th Form Tutor in September 2007. In the summer, Matt coaches tennis and tries to support and assist as many of the Duke of Edinburgh trips as he can - hiking/trekking as well as most sports are of interest to him. Before Stowe, Matt was at the University of Southampton.
Susi Plummer - 3rd Form Tutor Susi originally joined Stowe in 2001 in a staff training capacity in the ICT Department. Her role later expanded as she led the introduction of the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) qualification at Stowe, and now teaches ICT throughout the year groups while also planning and delivering staff INSET. Susi is married to Simon and they have two children.
Costas Peratopoullos - 5th Form Tutor Costas teaches Design, and is the academic tutor for the Fifth Form. Costas was born in London and originally worked in Buckinghamshire for the local education authority at County Hall before moving to Cornwall with the MOD. He then began teaching in comprehensive schools in Cornwall and Devon. While in Devon he was part of a team that set up a drug rehabilitation unit and then later a secure unit in Wales. He continued his teaching returning to Buckinghamshire and joined Stowe in 2002. Costas's wife Frances is a speech and language therapy assistant and they have three children Chloe, Alexis and Flora. He enjoys angling, reading and watching his children play sport at county level.
Paul Miller - 6th Form Tutor Paul has been a Sixth Form Tutor in Chandos House since his appointment to Stowe in September 2003. Before that, he was an Assistant Housemaster at Worth School in West Sussex, where he tutored at all levels from Year 9 to Sixth Form for a period of more than twenty years. A graduate in English from Oxford University, he also holds two postgraduate degrees and taught for several years at university level (at Queen's, Belfast and Exeter). Paul has been a Head of English in secondary education since 1990. His interests, other than literature, include history, music, fine art and travel (including walking and cycling). Paul is married to the Stowe School Librarian, Carol Miller.
Matthew Pitteway - 6th Form Tutor Matthew has been at Stowe for three years having read Business and Commerce at Edinburgh University. He is a keen cricket and soccer player and runs the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme within the School. He is the academic tutor to the Sixth Formers in the House.
The Marquess of Buckingham's son married Lady Eliza Brydges, the heiress of the last Duke of Chandos, and in 1822 became 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. The family name became Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville! A new title of Viscount Chandos was bestowed on a member of the Lyttelton family in 1954 and he presented the prizes at the 1960 and 1965 Speech Days.
