Bruce House Staff

Isaac Michael - Housemaster
Isaac started his teaching career at Winchester College after 5 years at Exeter University where he captained the basketball, played 1st XV rugby, 1st XI cricket and was twice University decathlon champion. In 2000 he became Housemaster of Bruce after 10 successful years as Director of PE during which time he introduced GCSE and A Level PE and had periods running rugby, cricket, basketball and badminton. He now teaches French full-time and is still Master-in-Charge of basketball. Isaac became Senior Housemaster at Stowe in 2005 and in 2006 took on the role of Co-curriculum Co-ordinator overseeing the sports and activities programme and development. He is married to Jenny and they have 4 children, Abby, Jimmy, Miles & Toby. His other interests are music, performing arts and gardening. Isaac is stepping down as Housemaster at the end of the Summer Term 2008 but he will be remaining at Stowe to help develop the co-curricular provision of the school.

Craig Sutton - Housemaster (from September 2008)
Craig joined Stowe in September 1996 after graduating from Exeter University with a degree in Sports Science and Geography. He took over as Head of the Physical Education and Sports Science Department in September 2000. He has experience of tutoring at every age group, and has been a sixth form tutor for the past six years. Craig has played rugby for London Wasps and the South West of England, and has also coached up to divisional level. As well as coaching the senior rugby teams, he has run the cricket and tennis at Stowe. His wife, Sarah teaches at St Edward’s, Oxford and they have two young children, Emily and Benjamin. Craig is excited by the prospect of taking on his new role as Bruce Housemaster and will be working closely with Isaac during the remainder of this year.

Ann Lake - Matron
Ann joined Bruce House in January 1996, having had a wide and varied career in Child Care, including 'special needs' and she has had experience of boys and girls of all ages in a boarding environment. Ann likes to be involved with all aspects of life at Stowe - commitments to Bruce permitting. She firmly believes in an 'open door' policy for the boys in her care at all times. Ann's main interests at Stowe are helping with the Community Service programme, music and sport - especially cricket (in her view any game which includes afternoon tea has to be worth watching!). In any free time during the holidays Ann enjoys walking, reading and indulging her passion for Opera.

Gordon Oldham - Under-Housemaster and 4th Form Tutor
Gordon came to England in January 2006 from Melbourne, Australia, where he studied a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education at Monash University. He then completed a major in English with minor studies in Drama and History before spending time as a teacher at Camberwell Girls Grammar School. Gordon has always held a strong interest in journalism and magazine publications, becoming the editor of "Lot's Wife" at Monash, one of the more notorious student newspapers in Australia and worked as a contributing journalist for "The Age", the Melbourne daily broadsheet, writing about the Victorian Football League (Australian rules). He loves Aussie Rules and wants to find a Premier League team to support so he can continue to passionately follow a sport. Gordon played basketball and tennis and later played mixed netball and ultimate frisbee - which he says are two of the best social sports he has ever played. Gordon's sports interest and journalistic skills are made full use of at Stowe - as well as being an English teacher he is also basketball coach and editor of the School's annual magazine, The Stoic.

Alan Murray - 3rd Form Tutor
Alan arrived at Stowe in January 1987 after 7 years in Africa (Ethiopia and Botswana), he is married to Kay and has four children. Alan teaches Geography and is in charge of soccer at Stowe. He is also involved in Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions.

Bob Roberts - 5th Form Tutor
Bob joined Stowe in 2005, having spent seven years previously in the state sector, not to mention time spent teaching English abroad and working in Outdoor Education. He is Second in English at Stowe and Head of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Bob also gets involved in running a Junior Colts and/or Yearlings Rugby team. He is due to marry his partner, Lisa, in February 2007. Somewhere along the way he hopes to find time to play the guitar, do some windsurfing and go to the hills.

Panos John - 6th Form Tutor
Panos studied Industrial Technology and Management at Bradford University and then worked for five years in the Aluminium Industry before joining the teaching profession. He has worked in four state schools and prior to joining Stowe was Faculty Head of Business and Computing at a New Forest School. Panos is currently the Head of Business Studies and is also Master in Charge of squash. Panos is a keen sportsman and enjoys playing a range of racket sports and recently he has taken up golf and skiing.

James Tearle - Attache
James studied Chemistry at Oxford University and joined Stowe as a full time Chemistry teacher in 1990. Since then he has been drawn in the direction of ICT and is now Head of ICT at the School, although he still teaches Chemistry. James was Under-Housemaster in Bruce for 5 years, the last 3 years of which his wife, Alice, was a resident Tutor in the House. They have since moved out of Bruce to another house on site at Stowe when their family arrived, but still have very fond memories of life in Bruce.

History of Bruce House

The 2nd Duke of Buckingham & Chandos married Lady Mary Campbell, daughter of the Marquess of Breadalbane and Holland. One of her family names was Bruce and, as this was the only 'royal' name connected with the Temple family, that is believed to be why it was chosen.
