Plans for September 2008 The term’s delay we experienced in the opening of the first of our new girls’ accommodation in Queen’s House, caused by the contractor, Sapcotes, going into administration, has regrettably, and inevitably, had an impact on the progress of our second House. With a new contractor now on board, our second House will be ready for our new girls to move across in January 2009.
It is our intention to repeat the use of the newly refurbished Stanhope as a ‘waiting House’ for the autumn term, which worked very successfully for our Queen’s House girls, as any of them will testify. Using Stanhope enables us to provide on-site accommodation and facilities for the girls which enables them to stay together to form a cohesive community and settle in at Stowe until we can take complete ownership of our second, as yet unnamed, House.
Any parents visiting Stowe with a view to their daughter joining us, and who are interested in the new House will be shown around Queen's House - the first completed part of our new girls' accommodation - to see the style and standard of accommodation which will be mirrored in the new House.
We are delighted to be able to announce that we have appointed the new Housemistress for our second House, Mrs Jenny Nelson, and that Jenny is already with us at Stowe, as Head of Woodwind. Jenny has also been working with our Queen’s Housemistress, Mrs Jane Hamblett-Jahn, as 3rd Form Tutor to our Queen’s girls so she has already had experience of nurturing our new girls through their first term in Stanhope.
Jenny came to Stowe in 2006 as Head of Woodwind having previously taught at Marlborough College, Bradfield College and the Centre for Young Musicians. She studied clarinet and saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music, London where she was the recipient of many major awards and prizes. Jenny went on to a successful performance career working with all the major orchestras in this country and travelling throughout Europe and the Far East on concert tours. She has performed at the Proms many times and also participated in many television and BBC radio broadcasts. During 2003-2006, as well as teaching at Marlborough College, Jenny performed almost exclusively at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, working along side artists such as Placido Domingo and Bryn Terfyl.
Jenny is married to Howard, a professional flautist and conductor and they have two children, Joss and Isla. Travel, climbing, trekking and the Arts are still a huge part of life and Jenny has organised trips across the Alps many times, climbed Mount Toubkal, Morocco and trekked in the Himalayas and across India twice.
Jenny feels there are many parallels between the performance of sport and music, and both her teaching and performance careers have instilled motivation, determination and a sense of purpose and fun. Jenny is excited at the prospect of inspiring a new generation of Stoics with these qualities and together building and shaping the character of the new boarding house.
Queen's House is the first part of the new building to house our new girls' accommodation. The exterior and interior of Queen's, pictured above, will be mirrored in the second House.
Situated in the area adjacent to the Chapel, Chatham House and Bruce House, the design and materials are creating a building for the 21st Century which will sit comfortably within the traditional surroundings of Stowe. On the southern side, a re-landscaped avenue of trees will be planted along the original 18th Century alignment to the Temple of Bacchus.
The new building is being built to the highest modern, environmentally friendly standards. Careful thought has been given to the interior layout, to provide sympathetic space and light, particularly suited to girls of differing year groups.
The four-storey houses comprise:
-
A number of Common Rooms
-
A variety of shared and single study/bedrooms, all with ensuite
-
A dedicated area for day girls
-
Music practice rooms
-
Sports kit changing areas
-
